Official 2016 Coaching Carousel Thread - How safe is Kevin Sumlin´s job?

He´s 69. Just like with Spurrier I think this movie is primarily aimed at giving his assistants a shot to show what they can do and give the school a heads up to have a look at the market early.

Spiff was making a joke about O'Leary's past resume issues at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame Coach Resigns After 5 Days and a Few Lies
By JOHN W. FOUNTAIN with EDWARD WONG
Published: December 15, 2001

  • SOUTH BEND, Ind., Dec. 14— Five days after naming George O'Leary its new head football coach, the University of Notre Dame announced today that O'Leary had resigned suddenly after admitting to falsifying parts of his academic and athletic background.

George O´Leary has retired effective immediately.

Midseason retirements are becoming a thing.
At least he waited until a bowl game was impossible. Spurrier jumped ship while they still had a chance to somewhat salvage the season. Totally abandoned the kids who played for him.

Gamecock friends of mine tell me that "retirement" is nicer than saying "fired at mid-season." Not sure about O'Leary, but I don't think Spurrier had much of a say in his move.

Not a good season to be a head coach of a football team that plays its home games at Sun Life Stadium.

Canes have the sixth ranked recruiting class. Guess some people in Gainesville and Tallahassee will be busy on their phones for a while.

Which is more likely: Rich Rod leaves, Mora to the NFL, Whittingham goes to premier program.
Good question. Just based on their success this year and the turmoil that seemed to be going on between him and his AD right before the season, I'll say Whittingham is the most likely to leave.

Mora isn't going to get past Stanford, aTm without Manzel is a fountain of disappointment. Only ND of the three has a good chance of having the kind of outcomes the fans want.

If an NFL team wants to offer one of the first two NFL type money I'd recommend the jump in a flash. A number of coaches have made the jump and even if they fail seem to have no problem getting premium college jobs so there isn't much risk for them.

RichRod knows that he is at a dead end in the desert. I could easily see him taking either an NFL job or more likely the Miami job. His "moral standards" and east coast history would make him a natural at the U.

Rich Rod is more likely USC-East or VT than Miami, I think. RR and VT's AD go back to WVU days. one source reporting that discussions between the two have already happened about RR replacing Beamer (link). We'll see. it's going to be an interesting off-season for VT fans.

Notice it doesn't say he was fired and is no longer an employee of the university. Probably has something to do with how his contract is structured.

I thought it would be more likely for Todd Graham to find a new 'Dream Job' and jump ship than Rich Rod.

Also, will Sunny Dikes move on given Cals recent academic adjustments?

Surprisingly, Miami's recruiting hasn't set the world on fire like most people think it should. They only signed 2 of the top 30 players in Florida last year I guess. Maybe they will look at someone who can recruit better.

They were #26 in 2015, #11 for 2016, and currently at #2 with verbals from 2017. I'm not sure if their recruiting is that big of an issue.

Yeah I was talking about signed classes and 26th in the country with that recruiting base is not okay with their fans. But seriously think about that for a second, they only signed 2 out of the top 30 players in Florida last year.

Yeah, I guess it's all relative. When will the Chip Kelly rumors begin?

I don't think Mora is going anywhere. He has been an NFL head coach and probably understands that world better than most. But who knows.

I don't really understand why he would want to leave UCLA but his name continues to come up when talking about college coaches who want to make the jump so him or his agent must be open to listening.

It is also a really good way to get a raise.

Talking on this thread. Expectations differ greatly in fan bases. Nebraska gets 9 Ws a season. They fire their coach. Miami wins 60% of their games, they fire their coach.

I would kill, okay seriously maim, to be 32-25 in 4.5 years.

I never thought Golden was a fit there. Not surprised they got rid of him. Not sure who would take it, the U has some issues. Isn't their stadium like 40 miles off campus or some ****?

His dad was a pro coach, he has been in the league.

He is a big enough name that he could get a bunch more money than the significant amount he already gets at UCLA. There is also the appeal of coaching at the highest level.

There is also the reality that even with their current state of disorganization USC will always be the top dog in LA. It looks like some of the teflon is starting to peel off Pat Haden and assuming they get a competent AD in his place they will have their choice of coaches. USC has never had a problem recruiting, even against UCLA so Mora may want to move on if he gets the right offer.

Yeah. I don't have a good handle on his values. Most coaches, though, have healthy egos. That usually means a desire to prove it at the highest level.
