Starting QB when Sefo is back

Sefo needs to start next week. I can tell he's starting to get frustrated. Watching him in the Coliseum today, he would stand 30 yards away from the offense when they were huddled on the sideline at times. I thought for sure he would play the rest of the game after Montez went down late in the first half. Not sure what happened. Yes Montez has had a few nice games and he's improving but this is still Sefo's team.
 
It was obvious that Sefo's wheel was a little square when he tried to scramble.

SC had a great D game plan. I was happy to see some over the top attempts at end.

Not sure if SC slowed the aggression or if buffs line was blocking better.

Buffs still need more horses to compete week in and week out.
 
Montez still has all the promise in the world and would make a capable QB if we didn't have Sefo but also showed what I was afraid of. He was given a fair opportunity though, I thought this game would play out with Sefo starting and him getting a fair opportunity but instead Montez was the one with the opportunity and clearly it should be Sefo's job.
 
Team was jacked up when Sefo came in. It wasn't just my eyes, Mark and GB noted it (pass on SC asskisser announcers). Granted, that's often a reaction when a QB goes down and another comes in. MJ
certainly made it sound like he's pretty damn close to 100%

He was limping a bit between plays and overthrew one pass, but he showed he could execute the offense. If he gets the practice reps to rub off the rust, I think he could play fine next week. The ankle is still bothering him though, so we'll see if the coaches think he's ready to go.
 
In the 4th quarter, we saw why Montez was playing. Unfortunately, he struggled through the first half and still made occasional freshman mistakes til the end.
 
I said it after the Michigan game, when you play Montez you have to commit to the zone read run and play off of that. He plays off of those runs and play action. They got too obsessed with his in the pocket and it backfired IMO. He is not sefo, he will not pick you apart from the pocket.
 
Montez's passing was not nearly as sharp as during the Oregon games. The opportunities were there and we could have put up the points. There were many short/med passes that didn't give the WR opportunities to get YACs. The long balls were all off. Like all young qbs a dangerous pass rush gets to his head.

That is where Sefo>>Montez. A healthy Sefo would have won this game. He clearly isn't 100% though.

Seemed to me that USC was going with 9 in the box yet we were trying to dump short passes into the teeth of that. There was just nothing there. We finally started having more success when we threw deeper.

especially when he had no time
 
I'd keep doing it then. It did get better as time went. We had plenty of chances to win in the second half, just didn't work out. Again, I was listening not watching so it could be different.
 
sefo was making quicker decisions and moving the team faster and i too thought the team responded better when he entered the game. i hope he's able to go next week. there are no gimmes on this schedule.
 
Montez was ready to go back in a play later, the coaches left Sefo in for a reason, and didn't like enough of what they saw to continue it. He is still hurting plenty I'd guess.
 
If he can do it without favoring his foot constantly, I'm cool with him playing. They said he did today quite a bit. He's no doubt the leader.

They play everybody that way and some forget-who analyst commented on this last week. They don't think anyone can beat their athletes(e.g. Adore Jackson) in man coverage and they are then free to stack the box. Unfortunately receivers have to wait for or run to Montez long balls and this strategy worked for SC today. Kills me cause Sefo long balls are spot on; he struggles in the short throws that SC was on top of...****
