CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

It couldn't.

Pac isn't doing the noon slot either. So it's potentially a late slot on CBS with possible Tier 2 on CBSSN they're in negotiations.
But will CBS get the same ratings for a late slot as they do with their hit show “Boomers Fell Asleep 2 Hours Ago With the TV On and We’re Getting A Ratings Boost Because Of It” starring Shelly Long?

At least it's Saturday. This very real dynamic is what kills SNF for the NFL. The few Boomers still awake at 7pm ET are watching 60 Minutes that day.

Hmm, maybe I misread his tweet bc his writing style is kind of strange. So it would be 4:30pm PT/7:30pm ET on CBS.

He did clarify it’s CBS not CBS Sports.

This was always the best open time slot. ESPN 10PM ET is the 2nd best but CBS 7PM is critical and no, SEC never used this time slot. They always used the 4PM EST time slot which is now the Big Ten.

To me, CBS/ESPN/Apple or Amazon deal is the best bet.

CBS did use the 8pm timeslot twice per season for big games they wanted to put in prime time.

However if CBS decides to follow a B1G game with Pac12 game at 7:30/8 then I would expect that game to end up on CBSSN more often than not.

Why? You think there's a reality show for CBS that will draw a bigger number on the main network?

CBS only found it worthwhile twice a season to put an SEC game in prime time but now they're suddenly going to want to put a Pac12 (minus USC) game in prime time every week? Plus it would be going up against a top tier B1G or ND game on NBC, a premium match-up on Fox, and an SEC game on ABC.

That would determine what they were willing to pay, not whether they wanted the product.

If AppleTV+ gets it all the PAC as we know it will not be the same schools.

I think it will come down to the dollars and cents of that deal.

Lord only knows how many Apple devices are out there that can run Apple TV and then there are all those non-Apple devices that have Apple TV on them. ESPN+ is now $9.99/mo and climbing in price. The only thing that we don't know is how much of a factor that is in media rights deals because this streaming thing is still new.

As for ESPN, they are trying to determine when to offer the full ESPN programming on ESPN+ which is something that will eventually happen. That means ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN whatever, etc on ESPN+.

ESPN could put all NBA games on ESPN+ starting in 2025 as part of the new media rights deal. NHL & MLB games that are not local teams are already on ESPN+. CBS could decide to do the same thing with CBS Sports and put it on Paramount+.

Based on talk of the deal not being announced until later this summer appears to point at Disney's recently announced layoffs that also impact ESPN. Could be Amazon which has laid off a lot of people lately.

And FWIW, Big 12 has ESPN+ for the third tier rights so a move to the Big 12 for CU wouldn't be that much different from what the Pac-12 could do.

And this CFP expansion to 12 teams is a big deal too. My question is will CU's CFP playoff hopes be better by remaining in the P12 or going to the B12? If it is going to be the Big 12, then let's get the hell out of the P12 then. I know the P12 sucks when it comes to passion for college sports but if it is a better idea to stay in the P12, so be it.

As an east coaster, I would selfishly LOVE that time slot when CU gets placed there. Do all my chores/errands in the morning, start paying attention to college football around 1-2, get ramped up for 5 hours, in bed by 10:30. Sounds ideal to me.

Realignment threads seem like they don't die on message boards.

From four days ago:

Pac-12 is going against the NBA and WWE-UFC when it comes to ESPN. NBC is a possibly but they are renegotiating their deal with WWE Monday Night Raw. Isn't it just sad that the P12 appears to be below the WWE in the media rights pecking order? It seems like the P12 has shot itself in the foot by playing the waiting game.

CU is going to be either part of C-USA 3.0 or MWC 2.0 at this point...no sugarcoating things.

Sometimes its about broadening exposure. Does the NBA really want to be on ESPN+ with its limited viewership? If youre any of these sports you dont want to disappear like boxing did and lose future generations.

It doesnt always come down to dollars and cents but it is the dollar and cents that trap a lot of the conferences or sports in a corner. The problem with all these TV deals everyone is hoping for is that the bundle paid for most of it and people are cutting the cord and thats where the bundle money came from. When they cut the cord they dont immediately sign up for ESPN+. Disney had the most expensive bundle which is dying. ESPN has some expensive obligations. Iger and Pitaro are trying to thread a needle from ten feet away. The layoffs at ESPN say a lot to me about the problem.

From the perspective of set top a la 2000s you could get any service and see it all. People were happy. In the Streaming era each service will have something different. However, Everyone can still put up an antenna and get linear broadcast. Linear will always reach the masses.

So for me these amounts of money and the trends are beginning to look like a house of cards thats destined for a reset. Because I dont think the streamers, all divided up, will achieve enough audience. If Sunday Ticket on YouTubeTV flops that could be a harbinger of trouble.

Pro sports are different given the increasing popularity globally. Otherwise, great points.

To emphasize once more why realignment is about football and also about football.

Note that LSU is a very unusual case in baseball with its insane fan support. Anywhere else, it loses a couple million each year.

You can easily find the same thing within CU’s finances. I remember posting them a while back when the topic of dropping football was brought up around here. It’s simply not possible unless the University is willing to run the rest of the sports as substantial losses and cost of doing business.

The cable package ripped everyone off.

The next time you go to the hardware store to buy a hammer. Imagine if they told you that you could buy it, but you also needed to buy a wrench, a box of nails, a can of paint, and a shovel. Oh, and a portion of the proceeds will go to a political organization that you oppose. Don’t like it, oh well, we are the only hardware store in town.

Cable TV subscribers, those of you that remain, are enablers.

Of course they did. They're in the business of making money. But streaming is just as much of a rip off nowadays; to get the full compliment of things you want you have to stack services up to just about the cost of cable. New look same taste.

It’s all the same now with streaming and getting worse.

I think ESPN+'s monthly sub is getting close to the same amount that people pay monthly for the ESPN family of channels and once ESPN+ passes that price point, the move of the ESPN channels to ESPN+ will begin and I think that is coming soon. Just look no further than the fights that channels have had with cable carriers (Altitude Sports and Comcast ring a bell?). I just think that people who have no interest in sports are just tired of paying for sports programming on cable TV. I only want sports TV and I don't want to have to pay for the other channels. I am hardly alone in that case and that is why I have been a cord cutter for over ten years.

And when you talk about broadening exposure, there are billions of Apple & Android devices out there that can have games streamed on them. That is more than actual televisions out there.

If you didn't think that those media companies were in for some lean years doing this transition, I have a bridge in the SF bay to sell to you.

The Pac-12 fanbase isn't necessarily like the others and probably is the one that will be the first major conference to go the streaming only route. The P12 needs more exposure in a big way after the disaster of the P12N.
