    From Scout:

Colorado coach Jon Embree continues to pursue available prospects at wide receiver and likely will host two recruits early next week.

Looks like Tyler McCulloch's recruitment was slowed by an injury in September, 2010: lacerated spleen.

He came back in November, (remarkably so), in time for the state playoffs and had a great rest of season.

Eagles Rip Cougars in 5A Football Playoffs

Tyler McCulloch made a triumphant return, Chris Sedillo had a 128-yard night, Marcus Jaramillo couldn't miss in the clutch, and the Eldorado Eagles move on.
The Eagles overcame two first-half turnovers, including one inside Cibola's 1-yard line, and poured it on the 12th-seeded Cougars in the second half, taking a 28-7 decision in a first-round Class 5A playoff game Friday night at chilly Wilson Stadium.
The fifth-ranked Eagles (9-2) play at No. 4 Las Cruces (9-1) this coming Friday night at the Field of Dreams.
After a 7-7 game at halftime, Eldorado scored on its first three drives of the second half.
"In the first half, we had some red-zone fumbles, but we came in here, got focused, and did our thing," said the 6-foot-5 McCulloch, an outstanding receiver who saw his first action since lacerating his spleen and liver at Mayfield on Sept. 17. "If you let teams hang around, then there's a good chance you are gonna get beat."
Eldorado clearly missed McCulloch - no one more than Jaramillo, the Eagles' quarterback who had one of his best nights of the year, completing 19 of 30 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns.
"I have to give all the credit to Marcus," said tight end Josh Day, who also benefited from McCulloch's return.

    ----
another nice write-up on Tyler in a pre-playoff review of the Eldorado Eagles:

COULD VERY WELL WIN THE WHOLE THING, DON'T WRITE OFF

Is it fair to say that one player makes a team? No, however 6-foot-5, 200 pound receiver Tyler McCulloch makes the Eldorado Eagles that much better as he possesses an outside threat to free up their big ground game. With McCulloch missing the middle half of the season, Eldorado has been very one dimensional and has not been able to throw the football to free up the rushing attack. McCulloch will be back in a few weeks, which is great news for Eldorado. The defense is very good and they are led by 6-foot-4, 315 pound Willie Pounds and 6-foot-4, 310 pound Tyler Eschulmen. The twin duo makes for two of the biggest defensive tackles in the state. This team will be fine and don't be surprised to see them flying into the semifinals. This is one bird that is staying around through the winter.

Big, good hands, decent moves, not afraid to go over the middle, doesn't shy from contact. TE prospect, perhaps?

are those DT's any good? are they seniors?

edit: just watched the 2010 vids. Looked almost like the old dallas cowgirls flex defense.

Tyler's team lost in the state playoffs when a two-point conversion failed. Tyler McCulloch made the TD immediately prior, but was on the sideline when they went unsuccessfully for two. Had they kicked the XP, they would have tied, and gone into OT. Ouch.

Tyler McCulloch scored 4 touchdowns in the game, which ended 28-27 in favor of Las Cruces.

Eagles 'Devastated' as Late 2-Point Try Fails

New Mexico High Schools - Preps From the Newspaper By James Yodice / Journal Reporter Sat, Nov 20, 2010 LAS CRUCES - Another playoff visit to the Field of Dreams for the Eldorado Eagles ended with another playoff nightmare.
Marcus Jaramillo's 2-point conversion pass fell incomplete in the end zone with 1:18 remaining, and fourth-seeded Las Cruces escaped with a thrilling 28-27 victory Friday night in the Class 5A football quarterfinals.
"I'm completely devastated," Eldorado coach Charlie Dotson said. "I've never seen anything like that."
Jaramillo had thrown a 7-yard TD pass to Tyler McCulloch - McCulloch's fourth touchdown of the night - to bring fifth-seeded Eldorado (9-3) to within a point.
McCulloch, however, was on the sideline when Dotson opted to try for the go-ahead 2-point try instead of play for overtime.
"It was a surprise to me," said McCulloch, who earlier caught TD passes covering 53, 7 and 19 yards, one in each quarter. "But I can't complain. It was the right call."
Jaramillo rolled out and tried to hit Josh Day in the back of the end zone. But under pressure, he had to throw off his back foot. The ball never really had a chance of getting through.

A little surprised that UNM or NM St wouldn't take a chance on a kid like this. At the very least seems to be a guy you could use in red zone situations; he had some pretty nice one-handed grabs on his tape.

You bring up a great question -- why aren't NM and NMst onto this guy?

Tyler said before his senior year,
trivia: Defensive tackle Willie Pounds is/was one of Tyler's HS teammates.
Remember Pounds' last interview with Scout? Summer 2010:
Far as I can tell, Willie Pounds remains uncommitted to any college.

Here's the allbuffs thread on Willie Pounds.

Decent ball skills, but he did not particularly wow me. Think we have enough athletes at TE on the team already.

Watched the film. He's definitely skilled as a pass catcher and runs good routes for a high schooler. I was surprised by the agility he showed and also that he's quick off the line (I expected such a tall guy to take a while to get up to speed).

It's going to be interesting to see if he is being looked at as a WR or as a guy we'd convert to TE. There was enough downfield blocking shown on his vids to make it clear he's not afraid to mix it up a bit. Either way, one thing that is clear is that this coaching staff puts a premium on giving its QBs big targets to throw to. I definitely agree with that philosophy. Not only does that make it easier to complete passes, but bigger receivers also make a big difference in the run game.

Your last statement is key. JE wants physical wideouts.

Looks like he would have to put on some serious weight if he were to ever see the field as a TE. Could be a decent receiver if he runs sharp routes and has a good set of hands. Speed is nice to have but it isn't absolutely necessary as a receiver, especially for a possession type receiver.

Any idea if we would bring him on scholarship or if he would be invited to walk on?

He could be an interesting matchup problem on short yardage situations and in the red zone. If he doesn't get faster he is going to have issues playing in the Pac 12 against guys who are going to jam him at the line of scrimmage and then be able to catch up with him after they release.

Gotta maybe wonder if he's a fallback if we can't get Thomas. If both want to come, make McCulloch a preferred walk-on. If guys leave in the spring or summer, put him in scholly. I know Boise State did that with Vinny Perretta...got a scholly after his first day of fall camp.

I'd test his vertical while he's here if I were one of the coaches. On his film, I never really saw him jump because he didn't need to against that level of competition. Maybe have him play some pickup basketball with the guys. I'm more concerned with jumping ability, short area quickness and explosiveness than I am raw speed. If he's got everything else (to go with good work ethic and the good hands we've seen), he could be a 6'5" version of Scotty McKnight.

He can go 5-10 yards on a sideline route, throw the ball high, and beat really fast 6 footers every time. Could be a situational guy, but then, we already have Darden with the same height matchup problems for that role.

You can't tryout kids but you can verify ht and wt. And they can play hoops here I believe for fun. Just no FB, timed shuttles, vertical jumps etc.

Exactly. I probably wasn't clear in my post. A pickup basketball game is how I'd get an idea on his vertical.

As a rule of thumb, if a guy doesn't look good on a basketball court I don't want him as a WR or DB.

So walk-on to NMST and NM but scholly at CU? Interesting... Horn fans did say Kennedy was maybe too into tall rangy WR's. Will wait on this one tho

    February 13, 2011 Rivals update:

"Coach [Anthony] Tucker is the offensive technical intern at Colorado, he is a receivers guy, and he actually coached me at their camps so he remembered me and showed my film to the new staff," explained McCulloch.
What's the connection between Tucker and McCulloch?
Tucker saw McCulloch at CU's summer camp? He must have been something special for Tucker to remember him. (Trivia: Tucker is a graduate of Los Alamitos HS. I think we had a recruit from there once. Clark something.)

    McCulloch makes the catch.

NM and NMSU may be thinking preferred walk-on because they underestimate this player since he's instate and historically NM has produced very few D1 athletes (only one in the 2010 class, about 5 this year.) If they are paying poker with McCulloch and CU offers this week, they may have to go "all in" on the next hand (if there is one) if they really want him. Or, if they stay with the PWO offer and so does Colorado (until everyone sees how well he's recovered from the injury), I would imagine playing in the PAC12 and going to school in Boulder would be a greater draw for this young man than staying home in NM and being either in the Western Athletic Conference or the Mountain West.

If Tyler Hansen can come back from an injured spleen, so can Tyler McCulloch. I have no idea what a lacerated liver entails, but sounds like he's good to go if doctors have cleared him.

I know he is not nearly as tall as McCulloch, but I would rather see Kyle Washington get a shot at WR than see an offer go to McCulloch.

    Hunch.

He'll be a buff and he'll be very, very good.

After a Sept. 2010 game in which McCulloch had an outstanding 11-catch, 130-yard performance, an opposing coach previewed the upcoming competition:

“He’s tall and strong,” Clovis defensive coordinator coach Darren Kelley said of McCulloch. “He’s pretty athletic. The best thing about him is he has great hands. Being 6-4, 6-5 definitely is an advantage out there.”

Fourth-year Eldorado coach Charlie Dotson said McCulloch compares favorably to 2009 grad Ross Williams, who gave the Wildcats fits in 2008 regular season and playoff wins. Williams was faster, Dotson said, but McCulloch’s length gives him better ability to make plays in traffic.

Jerry Rice ran a 4.7 or something.. 40 times are pretty overrated. If he has quickness off the line and can run good routes, he doesn't need to be Ted Ginn on a straight line track.
