2023-24 Coaching Carousel (Fitzgerald out, DC Braun interim at Northwestern)

A couple of notes:
  • Enos is out at Arky, but I don't think Pittman has officially been canned yet.
  • Pretty sure Bryan Ferentz has officially announced he's out at the end of the season
  • I've no clue why Willie Fritz isn't connected to more jobs. It might be his age, I guess, but he's got a pretty solid track record at every level he's coached at, beat a vastly more talented USC team in a bowl last year, and has them doing pretty well again this year. Pretty sure he's well-thought of and well-liked in industry, too.
Yep, sounds like the Pittman canning story is being walked back. One caveat - his contract has a clause that vastly increases his buyout if his overall record is .500 or above. I think with the blowout loss to Auburn, it out his record right at .500, which may be why the story cooled.

Checked Wikipedia. He's 22-24.

I like Pittmann, but that record is hard to defend.

Maybe it was a “2020 doesn’t count” and after the Florida win he is guaranteed to finish at least .500 by the end of this year (if he loses final two, he’d be 19-19 without 2020 season). It’s convoluted…I’m just pressing all kinds of I believe buttons.

You know who I'd at least call if I'm Mississippi State? Jimbo. Here's why it makes sense for him-I think his ego has him coaching somewhere next year. I know fired coaches have a tendency to make their way to sports media, but he strikes me as the kind of guy who would get bored with TV. He's recruiting the same footprint he's been in for 23 years. He's in the same conference with Nick Saban and his former employer.

Here's why it works for MSU-Jimbo was 45-25 in six years at A&M. He had them in bowls his first four years, and they're eligible this year. That gets one fired in Aggieland, but that makes one a king in a place like Starkville. Might be getting a fairly motivated coach in Fisher after the A&M experience, and you're asking him to recruit the same footprint he's been in for 25 years now. He can feasibly rub Aggie's noses in it while continuing to be a pain in Saban's ass.
