Hah - I think aTm is kicking themselves for not joining the SEC and will bolt sooner than later in this Big XII (minus II) cluster****.

They want 20 million from a weakened conference and no championship game. Good luck with that.

B12 was held together by promises they won't be able to keep. It will last 2 years imo.

Maybe I wasn't paying attention, but since when did aTm start swinging a big d**k in the Big 12? Those f**kers don't move the needle like UT or Oklahoma and haven't been nationally relevant for a long time unless we're talking about giant collapsing bonfires. They should be thankful for what they're getting now.

A&M is 16 million dollars in the red...that says everything.

I don't think the SEC is going to invite them in unless the Big Ten or Pac-12 goes to 16 teams. Those dumb Aggies are playing with fire...if they go to the SEC, the other Texas schools have told A&M they would refuse to play the Aggies. They better be careful with how they proceed.

HUGE following in the state of Texas. They move the needle, alright.

They do have a large, devoted fanbase (of "former students" - they're not allowed to call each other alumni because most dont graduate). But they're definately #3 at best in the Big 12 behind UT and OU, as you said.

If none of these things are in writing, I have to imagine the promises to stay are also not in writing. This conference could fall apart before they get ink on the paper.

With the league down to 10 teams and no exciting options out there for replacements, any school in the league with a halfway realistic exit strategy is a big swinging dick these days.

Seems like Aggie is having some second thoughts over swallowing Beebe's absurd revenue projections so fast. You can hear the collective "FURK!" all the way from College Station....

difference between OU and UT and ATM is: the first two are national players. ATM is still a regional "power".

i do think the ags should have taken a harder line inside the Texas politics for the SEC.

I believe aggy needs OU to come with them to the SEC.

With $60 million in "promises" to A&M, Texas and OU - this conference had better have some BIG TIME tv revenue. Otherwise you're going to see OU, Texas, and A&M getting 2x the money of the other 7 conference schools. No way that will last.

I can already see the new conference slogan now...

"The Big 12: We're doing fine with nine!"

    :)

I love this reply in the comments section of the story:

Business for morons (named Dan Beebe) 101: How to manage a major sports conference
    .
Step 1: Promise teams $20 million
Step 2: Don't give it to them
    Step 3: ????
    Step 4: PROFIT!

I just don't understand how A&M pulls this much sway. Without the recent hoops resurgence under Gillespie, their hoops program is garbage. And though they have some history on the football side, they haven't been really good for about 15 years. Finally, they always play second fiddle to UT. What gives?

Personally, there are a handful of other middle-of-the-road Big XII schools (Mizzou, Ok-State, KU) that I'd take over TAMU.

aggy has a strong fanbase but other than that, they dont' have much going for them. Bear's short tenue, Jackie's run in the SWC in the 80's and RC's run in the 90's is their only sustained success in football.

they know that they have the SEC offer in their belt, so they can bolt at anytime.

...I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not. To me, the things you just mentioned are a lot to me. A&M is definitely a top 25 program all time, and although they have been struggling for awhile, I would imagine that they still have the resources to keep attempting at climbing the hill. I am surprised that they were able to command 20 mill/year, but they are still a major team. I hate to say it, but I put A&M above CU historically.

Regardless though, I do think the Big 12 crumbles in a few years, as well as the BCS.

I think aggy and CU football wise is pretty similar historically. I don't think they are a major player though but there's probably only about 12 major players in college football anymore.

I think CU and aggy are both in the Top 20-30.

A&M is notable in football for being a stepping stone. Three of their best coaches ever are more known for their careers AFTER A&M... Bryant, Stalling, Sherrill.

Sure, they had some success in the SWC, but that conference was mostly full of non-contenders such as Rice, Baylor, Houston, SMU, TCU & Texas Tech.

Jackie had a better run at Pitt (which was before aggy) then at Aggy and Miss State.

That probably depends on how long it takes before Texass is back to looking for a conference to rescue them from the wreckage of league they destroyed. Again.
