"Hawkins said he might put Scott back to punt at times this season and going forward in his career because of the problems it will cause opponents. Of course, Scott will have to prove he can be an effective punter in those situations for the move to have maximum impact on punt return teams."

i.e. "Our other punters suck, we might as well give the ball to someone who has an opportunity to do something with it."

Its a weird thought, if he can punt half-decently, it does open up the possibilities for fake punting options. (as much as everyone here LOVES those)

I read somewhere he punted quite a few times at st. bonny. Let's get Rodney to punt too.

If we could establish him as a somewhat legitimate threat at punter that would open up a huge range of possibilities. Every 4th down would be a huge question mark and while that might be a heart attack inducer for us as fans, imagine how that would affect an opponent's game plan. I'm in favor of at least giving it a try.

That I like. Scott lined up as punter and Polk at upback, they know it is a fake but not to who.

I don't like it. Why place your potential star RB in a situation where he can get completely clobbered?

Yea, but he is going to have to actually punt on occasion, and in those situations he will be exposed

Last time I checked they had a penalty for that so most teams don't intentionally "clobber" the punter.

I'm really beginning to wonder if Hawk's mentioning all of these possible scenarios to **** with people's (esp. opposing coaches) heads. I don't think there's really enough allowed time to actually practice all these things.

But it happens, especially in college. Sometimes the punter gets his leg clipped, or the defense BLOCKS the punt and takes out the leg of the kicker in the process.

I think it is an unnecessary risk. I don't like having the RB's legs exposed.

Exactly. Talk about adding way too many variables. A lot can go wrong real quickly when you start inserting random people into formations without much practice.

And how many times does the punter get hurt? How much time did DiLallo spend on the injured list? Torp? etc.

It's punting. These are the least athletic guys on the field and if they can stay healthy with all this danger coming at them, then I would hope a RB could too.

Also, his legs are exposed every time he runs the ball. You can call it unnecessary if you want but it would be interesting to see.

I think they should punt on this idea. Rollout punt.

I see your point and it's valid. I just want to take the Ferrari out of the garage. If it gets dinged, hopefully it can be fixed.

I agree that it would be exciting.

I guess part of the question is - does he punt regularly, or only in certain situations? Maybe he only comes in for situations where we are at borderline field-goal range... opponents 40 - 45.

I guess it could be effective in certain situations.

i'm in the 'this is a stupid idea' category. punters already have a big bulls-eye on their jersey after the returner catches the ball and tries to do something with it. the punter is fair game once the return is on, is he not? it's just a stupid risk. and sorry, but isn't our punter still matt dilallo? it's our field goal unit that will suck big-time this year, not our punting.

at least we won't have to worry about it till our game against eastern washington. i don't suspect we will have a fourth down until then.

If it's little Joey Ganz, I say forget the fake. Punt it on first down and let him throw a couple INTs that we return for TDs.
