The problem is that we never knew what DS had. Hawkins has run this program like a Big Sky program since he got here. I am as big a proponent of a solid walk-on program as anyone on this board but damn it Hawkins if you want to run a program with a bunch of lunchbucket effort guys who didn't have enough talent to get major college offers, go to D-2 or D-3. This is big boy football and Hawkins is not a big boy coach.
DScott is just the tip of the iceberg. How many other top athletes are sitting on the bench because they didn't practice like Hawk thought they should. I love Speedy and Lockridge and Sumler are both quality effort guys but realistically how many Big XII coaches would be playing Sumler 1/2 the game with a talent like Scott on the bench. Claiming he has been out of shape or injured is a giant crock as well. There is no part of football more violent than KO returns, he was healthy enough to return kicks but not enough to play offense, give me a break.
This is not pee-wee recreational league sports. There is no rule saying everybody gets to play and those who try hardest get to play the most. A coaches job is not to play the guys who work the hardest and try to maximize their skills, his job is to play the guys who have the most skill and get them to maximize their effort. Do we see Texas or Oklahoma putting top recruits on the bench so a hard working walk-on or even a lesser talented recruit can play? Absolutely not, they play the guys who have the talent to be difference makers and figure out how to get them to play their hardest.
Scott is not the only example of this. You only have to look at the WR position, or at Mohler sitting, or at some of the DL decisions over the past few years, etc. etc. etc. Right now you can't tell me that Simmons and Wright are not more capable of having a positive impact than Espy and Ebner, but who is in the game for crunch time. Who started the year at safety until they got fried like potatos in hot grease repeatedly against teams with limited talent like CSU and Toledo.
I do not have contacts on the team and won't claim to but it clearly looks like things are crumbling down, players are leaving, those who are staying are playing like they have already lost from the start of the game. Four years in and we still cannot call a play, line up, and snap the ball consistently without getting delay of game penalties or having to rush and making mistakes.
Hawk sets "high standards" for everyone out there but himself. If a player had shown a lack of ability to adjust, a lack of willingness to correct mistakes, and a lack of willingness to accept responsibility for his errors that Hawk has shown he would be benched or long gone. Hawk has, and continues to do all this and is getting support from the AD and the Chancelor.
It is time for Hawk to go, hire an interim HC and find a quality coordinator in the off-season who is willing to commit himself to making CU football what it can and should be, not this crap.
