Official 2014 ASU @ Colorado football game thread

Sefo did okay for the most part. It'll be fun to watch this kid really develop into a quality QB.

Holy ****. Am I back on the kool aide?!?!? Relapse!!
Time to set the iphone down.

I saw a lot of positives tonight ... more than I've seen ... well, it seems like forever. We have a lot of offensive talent, just lack experience. But the offensive possessions at the last part of the first half were inspiring.

Defense needs a lot of work obviously ... but I think the secondary is a lot better than at least I thought it would be. And can only get better. Crawley is very promising with a little more experience.

LB's need work ... Gillem is good, but needs help.

DL ... needs a lot more talent .. or work ... or something.

In any case, I'm encouraged. Yes ... I realize that the bar for CU football has been lowered since I first came into my association with CU in '95, but this is the first genuine improvement I've seen in several years against what is probably one of the three best teams in the Pac 12 ... notwithstanding the loss of Kelly (I hope he can come back this season ... seems like a class individual).

In sum ... let's beat Hawaii ... and go from there!

Lots of positives. You'd think if we played mistake free, for one, and executed a bit better, we could have had a real shot. It seemed like we were gaining confidence as the game went on.

Felt like a segue out of the epic blow out era. Hope it was

I think tonight was a step forward, for sure. We can now approach games in Folsom against mid level Pac squads and feel we can compete and even win if we get a bounce or two. Baby steps. Hawaii and Oregon St are going to show us a lot (I leave out Cal since we need to figure out how to win some at home before we worry much about the road)

I know ifs and buts but man, those two turnovers and the two red zone chances and only get a fg..... could have made things much more interesting. Much better but CU DL is AWFUL. These coaches have got to get these guys serious in the WEIGHT ROOM. Way to skinny of a team.

From the couch the D-line didn't look too bad, I felt most of the big runs were because the linebackers were out of position. On the QB sneaks, pretty hard to stop those no matter how good the D-line is. Other than a couple of penalties the secondary looked really good. I would give the secondary a B+, DL a C, the LB a D.

On offense, Sefo's deep ball is just not there. He is floating it. Also TV pointed out that almost all of his incompletions were to his left because he keeps opening up too much. I liked that inside run for CP from the FB spot in the I and Lindsay needs to be the starting TB or co #1 with Powell. Jones also looked good on the stretch. The line needs to get more push on run plays in short yardage or red zone situations.

The turnovers were the difference in the game, the injury to Taylor Kelly also helped keep us in it by eliminating that threat, but even with him, if we don't have those early turnovers, game goes down to the wire.

Vegas made a **** ton of $

They don't care who wins. Money is bet on both sides, and I bet the sharps kept the line from moving much. They make their money off the juice, that's why you never see a sportsbook close.

I blame the officials. They kept asu's drive alive on the drive where the QB broke the long one up the middle on a crappy looking PI call. A series or two before that, I thought they could've been called for PI and they weren't. A PI would've kept our drive alive. How'd those look on TV? They didn't show a replay on the board.

And WTF with the north end monitor!!!? That pissed me off, that thing always going out.

Fair points Aero, but i really hope Adkins can shake off this funk he's in. I had high hopes for him based off of last season.

The DPI's on us were ok calls from the TV replay. The no call in the redzone on them could have been called but was the kind of play that usually doesn't get called.

You know what would be great? Beating 'lil Ricky Jr in Boulder.

That doesn't actually feel completely insane anymore.

You know what would be great? Looking back on this season and realizing that winning at UMass and a 14 point home loss to #16 ASU were the earliest little signs of this program clawing back on the long road to respectability. I really hope this isn't another mirage. No more ****ing two steps backward. Schedule sets up over these next 3 games to allow us to show continued improvement and get a win (or even two) as a reward.

I was glad to see DLee out there tonight, need to get him the ball. Fields is a stud, he's gonna be as good as he wants to be. Lee can flat run. We get beat by 50 two years ago. No moral victories, maybe a step tho.

Right. It means nothing if we can't sustain and improve on tonight's offensive performance.

I watched the whole game. Before it started I figured I'd only make it to halftime.

Yes, this is still a work in progress. Some notes and observations:

- I heard the names Shaver, McCarthy, and Gilbert called. Maybe not enough, but the young d-ends weren't invisible.

- the secondary played pretty well, especially against a rhythm offense that likes to throw it quickly.

- nice to see Bobo and Lee involved. I'm encouraged by the receiving corps.

- hope Irwin is okay. Huckins seemed to fill in well. If before the game you had told me the starting LT would leave the game and the replacement would play respectably I would have called you crazy.

- I don't think Adkins is 100%. The other backs played pretty well.

- did Spruce have his longest punt return of the year?

- I heard the announcers talking about the scumdebils changing their defense because CU was stealing signals. I thot it was the other way around.

- (tongue in cheek) we actually have depth at ........... fullback.

Proud that the team didn't cave early. Enjoyed watching the whole game despite the L.

Just seemed like but for 5 or 6 plays, we could've won. I was really frustrated with the offensive play calling early on. It seemed to get better and better as the game went on. I'd like to see us begin a game with imaginative play calling.

 I don't really blame the officials. Although, I do wish they'd show the replay on the big screen. That is, if they can get the big screen to work.

A couple weeks back I was at a game in Towson, Maryland with a friend who is a fairly large donor (well, as much as you might have a large donor for Towson University, formerly Towson State University, formerly Towson State Teacher's College). At any rate, he introduced me to the associate athletic director for the school, and after the game I asked him why they didn't play a replay of what looked like a Towson touchdown but was ruled an incomplete pass. His response: "The NCAA requires that we not show replays of potentially controversial calls." I have seen the CU student section go ape over bad calls, throwing crap on the field, and such, so I guess I understand the rule/directive/whatever it is. I guess my point is that it is probably not CU's choice whether to play controversial replays.

I am certain that is the case. It is very difficult, if not impossible, to really see many of those plays/calls. The non call on, I think, Fields, looked like it should've been a penalty. The interference that kept their drive alive on third and long came from an official a good 20 yards away and very, very late on a pass that the guy wouldn't have caught.

Walking into the game, I was totally emotionally prepared to suffer a blow-out/boat race loss that was beyond redemption in the first quarter. And I wasn't even playing a mind-game on myself. But what I saw impressed me. CU looked like a school in the same level of football as ASU. We did not look like a high school team (a la second half against CSU). We did not look like a borderline FCS-FBS team (a la UMass). We looked like a friggin Pac-12 team. We were a worthy adversary, not just a walk-over. That, to me, was impressive and extremely emotionally satisfying.

On the other hand, it could be easy to say "if we only did this, or if we only didn't to that, we would have won." I once made a similar statement to a wiser man than I, and he looked it me, kicked the dust with his good, and said "Shoot, Tsar, and if birds had radios in their butts there would be music in the air. Unless you have a plan to get birds equipped with radios, stop talking about if and just get stuff done." Like I said, he was a wise man.

Couple other thoughts:

- O line on pass protection was the best I've seen in 3-4 years. It shows you what we can do when Sefo is given time and the WRs can actually complete their routes
- LB play is killing us. Those long Foster counters were all on the LBs guessing wrong.
- ASU's defense is even younger than we are. But they recruit at a higher level. So rolling up 500+ yards is a big.
- Lindsay is our best tailback. Way more burst and better instincts than Adkins had. Which means we probably need to get him off KOs, lest he get creamed. I get worried about the knee. Could Lee return kicks? Like what I saw from him.
- agree with Cville and others ... Hoping this isn't a flash in the pan and more of signs of what's to come.
- Ballage would have been a major coup for us. He's gonna be a beast.
- Spruce is our MVP. Best hands we've had since ... I don't know when, many years. Great instincts too. Heart of a Buffalo.
