Recruiting News - Olympic Sports

I'm very enthusiastic about our LAX program. Recruiting looks very good.

Wanted to mention I just noticed cross country (XC) has updated its roster and added the incoming freshman. It looks like the 2 young women (Madie Boreman and Sage Hurta) and 7 young men (Jared Borosky, Sal Capetillo, Connor Dunne, Eduardo Herrera, Nathan Pixler, Phillip Rocha and Paxton Smith) earlier noted in this thread are all 9 new freshmen harriers who might toe the line for the Buffs this year.

Bios for all 9 can be seen at http://www.cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?path=cross&roster=410&sort=class .

As usual, it's also impressive how many red-shirts the team was able to preserve (see roster for detail- The men have 2 red-shirt frosh listed while the women's roster lists 6) while still obviously being VERY competitive last season after runner-up finishes at NCAA's for both the men's and women's teams.

(Note- Unlike many prior years, I am not noticing any new incoming transfers this semester on the roster, although as noted in the transfer thread last December (Post 19 at https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/ol...ng-and-other-roster-news.105930/#post-1922544 ) the women picked up potentially a great contributor this past spring semester in this season sophomore (in XC, she'll be a freshman on the track) Makena Morley, who was the #4 ranked cross country recruit per the 2 major ranking entities (Milesplit's Flo50 and Dyestat) when she graduated from high school in spring 2015, and also had some solid results in college as a freshman before injury slowed her down a little at NCAA's (although she still had a top 100 finish there).)

Looks like another 2019 commit for soccer. (Still early of course, but like the last Buff Soccer 2019 commit tweet from early August, don't know who this commit is at this point.)

From the below Facebook and Twitter posts by her club team, looks like Buff lacrosse has picked up another commit for the 2017/18 year, midfielder Macaul Mellor from William Penn Charter School***, Philadelphia, PA., and the Quaker City Lacrosse Club (http://quakercitylacrosse.com/).

Welcome and congrats to her!

Club page on something called sincsports (How I found out what position she plays) - http://lacrosse.sincsports.com/TTTeam.aspx?id=PAF98048&menu=hide

Maxpreps page (not much info on it as I write this)- http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/macaul-mellor/HbhFN8aaEeS-8KA2nzwbTA/default.htm

She was named 2nd Team All-League this past season per http://phillylacrosse.com/2016/inter-ac-league-girls-team-announced/ .

(***Note- Per an article I found (http://www.chestnuthilllocal.com/2016/03/21/big-changes-for-penn-charter-girls-lacrosse/), looks like Penn Charters head coach is former Buff assistant Colleen Magarity.)

Another 2017 recruit for the Buffs VB team:

Per Rich Kern this is 6'4" Middle Blocker Danielle Price from Lethbridge, Canada.
I saw her at the scrimmage this past Saturday. 6'4" seems pretty accurate. Tall thin young lady. She played for the Canadian Youth National team this year.

Looks like another 2019 commit for soccer. (Still early of course, but like the last Buff Soccer 2019 commit tweet from early August, don't know who this commit is at this point.)

I probably/ possibly (***) have found the newer 2019 CU soccer commit- welcome and congrats to midfielder Aurrora 'Roo' Yarnell-Williams committing to join the Buffs!

Ms. Yarnell Williams is, per the following link (that also shows the Buff commitment) a member of the San Juan (California) Soccer Club (Spirits '01 ECNL team) - http://www.sanjuansoccer.org/collegecommits

Her topdrawersoccer page - http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/club-player-profile/aurrora-yarnell-williams/pid-90264/tab-articles
(Although with such a young player it probably doesn't mean much one way or the other as to what she'll be like almost 3 years in the future, they have her as a 2 star rated player as I write this.)

(***Found this via a more than usual circuitous/ indirect route- a congratulatory tweet from a teammate mentioning a Colorado commit and a picture of them together (but not her teammate's name or Twitter handle) leading to the friend's ECNL team homepage which led to the above linked club commitment page that lists Ms. Yarnell-Williams as being a Colorado commit. My TOTAL guess from the would be she is not a Twitter user.)

Thanks BeBe. I'll add her to the list in the OP. A couple highlight videos I believe I found for her-

Shorter video (40 seconds) -

W O W !!!! You get the 2016 Sherlock Holmes award for that bit of sleuthing!

Another day (seemingly anyways), another 2019 soccer commit!

From the below Buff tweets indicating someone had committed, a congratulatory tweet by a friend, and a Facebook post by the young woman herself, looks like the new verbal commit is midfielder Alexandra (Allie) Palangi from Arroyo Grande High School, in the town of the same name, and the So Cal Blues (ECNL) club team, all in California.

Welcome and congrats to her!

topdrawersoccer page for her- http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/club-player-profile/alexandra-palangi/pid-91923 (They have her rated as a 4 star player, with her "soccer/ academic honors" tab including quite a few items, including being on the U14 and U15 National Team rosters.)

A couple things-

1) The laxpower recruit database has added a new player showing for this season's freshman class- midfielder Jena Reichheld from Shrewsbury High School, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. Congrats and welcome to her!
(I couldn't find much info on her or confirmation of her commitment to CU via Google search, but via a quick student search at colorado.edu, did at minimum verify she is at CU this semester. I'd assume, with the lax fall training period imminent if not already started, we should be getting the formal announcement on cubuffs.com of this year's lacrosse freshmen class soon.?.)

2) Also just wanted to note I updated some information and notes of the 2017-19 class soccer commits in the table in the OP.

Also, forgot to mention above a 3rd thing- CU men's golf coach Edwards just evidently adopted the football team's commit twitter announcement format, and looks like he has a new commit for 2018-

I've never had much success in finding and identifying commits for the more individual sports (golf, tennis, track, etc.), so don't know when we might learn who the newest golf commit is. Anyone who might know is welcome to share, Until then, a general congrats and welcome to whoever he is!

As I'd mentioned ~1 week ago in a lacrosse thread, the Buffs announced their freshman class at http://www.cubuffs.com/news/2016/9/22/lacrosse-cu-adds-eight-student-athletes-for-2017-season.aspx . From that, the Buffs have one player not previously listed on this thread who has joined the team, while 2 players I had listed as being commits to the team are not part of the announcement, so assume they won't be joining the team.

The new player I hadn't had listed before in this thread who IS part of the freshman class announcement is Elinor Wolf, a 5'5" midfielder from Louisville, Ky. (Kentucky Country Day School) and Bluegrass Lacrosse.

Welcome and congrats to her joining the Buffs!

Her official Buff biography is at http://www.cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=11129 .

A youtube highlight video from her last high school season -

Wanted to mention one of my main sources for finding and/ or confirming commits in cross country and track and field, Milesplit, has started what I believe is a new feature for NCAA track and field fans called the "Recruiting Rundown" that lists recruits they consider major who have committed to a school, AND which colleges they have heard top non-committed athletes are interested in. The Current link to get to the rundowns is http://www.milesplit.com/series/1426 , with the latest update currently dated Sept. 29th.

(I have no idea how accurate or comprehensive this is, but definitely cool to have something like this for ANY of the Olympic sports, as we usually just hear about athletes AFTER they've committed to the Buffs in this thread.)

For the Buffs:

1) They don't show any commits for the 2017 class yet for CU.

2) As to class of 2017 athletes who MileSplit says are considering the Buffs, they list 2 so far (both distance runners)-

a) On the women's side, they show Brie Oakley considering the Buffs and Cal on their 9/29 update. Ms. Oakley runs for Grandview High School in Centennial, CO. In Flotrack’s latest (9/25) cross country rankings (which they call the Flo50), they had Ms. Oakley ranked as the #1 girl's high school cross country runner in the country (See http://www.milesplit.com/rankings/flo50/768-girls-national-xc-rankings/1687-sep-26 for the full ranking for full Flo50).
(A Denver Post article on her from a little over a week ago is at http://www.denverpost.com/2016/09/2...exceptional-young-female-runners-in-colorado/ . As to CU and Cal being her current favorites, looks like that's pulled from (near the end of) a video interview they had with her at http://ca.milesplit.com/videos/1554...witter&utm_content=Video&utm_term=Oakley91816 .)

b) On the men's side, their update dated 9/16 showed California's Cooper Teare considering CU, along with Stanford, Oregon and Georgetown. Mr. Teare runs for St. Joseph Notre Dame in Alameda, CA, and the latest Boy's Flo50 rankings (dated 9/26) ranked him as the #7 cross country runner nationally (see http://www.milesplit.com/rankings/flo50/757-boys-national-xc-rankings/1690-sep-26 for the full list).

Just wanted to mention I've updated the signing dates listed in the original post so they refer to the upcoming signing periods. It's now only a little over a month before the November 9th early signing period starts for all the Olympic sports (and basketball) except for soccer. (As I've noted previously, soccer is like football and only has one signing period, with this coming year's starting February 1, 2017.)

As I know I probably mention every year, I have never had any luck in finding out about any ski team commits ahead of time, and that continued this year. Although there hasn't been any formal announcement article I can find, It does look like the team has populated their roster (http://www.cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?path=ski) with the newest ski Buffs.

Welcome to all! Hope they can help the team on its path to this year's championships in New Hampshire!

The men (Just pasted from the roster. Doesn't look like the team has put in their Bios yet).-
Alpine:
5'9", 170 LBS; DAVID KETTERER; BAD DUERRHEIM, GERMANY; UNIVERSITY INNSBRUCK
6'2", 195 LBS; BOBBY MOYER; ASPEN, COLO.; ASPEN

Nordic:
6'0",160 LBS; ANDREW POTYK; SPOKANE, WASH.; JOEL E. FERRIS

The women-
Alpine:
5'4"; ANDREA ARNOLD; BOULDER, COLO. MIDDLE PARK
5'8"; ISABELLA FIDJELAND; KRISTIANSAND, NORWAY NTG; GEILO
5'7"; MEGAN MCGREW; FRISCO, COLO.; USSA TEAM ACADEMY

Nordic:
5'6"; ANNE SIRI LERVIK; ASKER, NORWAY; ASKER

In the sports that have them, you can hardly ever have too many goalies, and lacrosse has just evidently picked up their 1st for the 2019 class in Grace Donnelly, from the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, PA (a suburb of Philly), and Quaker City and/ or Skywalkers (MD) club teams. (I'm seeing reference to her at both clubs.)

Welcome and congrats to her!

Sorry to quote myself, but I'm seeing the Colorado High School Association's (CHSAA) commit database is showing that Kent Denver's Oliver Jack has committed to the Buff's men's golf team for the 2018 season. (Assume he MAY have been the one that generated the above-quoted Coach Edwards' tweet?)

Welcome and congrats to Mr. Jack for committing to join the Buffs!

In this his junior year, per http://chsaanow.com/2016-09-27/oliv...ps-kent-denver-win-record-ninth-championship/ , looks like he won the 3A Individual State Championship in late September, after finishing tied for 2nd in 2015. Another article on his team and his win in this year's championship is at http://www.juniorgolfcolorado.org/JGAC-Members-Make-Splash-at-Hig.html , with the later article also noting his Buff commitment.

Just wanted to update that it looks like the Buffs lost out on both the highly ranked runners I'd noted above as interested in the Buffs, with Ms. Oakley verbally committing to Cal, and Mr. Teare to Oregon. (And, I don't see any new news from the Milesplit link above re possible CU pickups, although I'm sure we'll be hearing of a few by the time of or once the official signing period starts in a little over a week.)

(Ms. Oakley's commit especially indicates to me how tough recruiting in general, and in-state recruiting specifically, can be for ALL sports:
  • Cross Country/ track is probably the one sport where CU, in Coach Wetmore (and staff), has someone who is considered one of if not THE best coach(es) in the country (similar to a Coach K, Urban Mayer, etc. in their sports).
  • And, In the last 3 years, the state of Colorado has now probably had THE top ranked college-bound female distance runner in 3 straight classes, and CU hasn't landed any of the 3, losing out to Stanford, Oregon and now Cal (with at least 2 of those schools having some reputation of not being the best at developing and/ or keeping their athletes healthy). Thankfully, as can be seen in yesterday's Pac 12 Championships, the Buff teams are doing fine anyways, but I'm kind of surprised they didn't have at least one of the top Colorado kids choose to come here.
  • An additional element to my surprise is that I could see all 3 possibly (???) having pro aspirations when college is over, and Coach Wetmore and company have shown, especially with Ms's. Simpson, Coburn, and Goucher, they also know how to coach pros as well if not better than anyone in the country, and the CU coaches have also, at least so far, only shown willingness to coach pro's who have run for the Buffs in college.

Note- one possible element which I assume makes track and field/ cross country recruiting different than most of the team sports is the limited amount of scholarship funding available in relation to roster sizes, with rosters looking to be somewhere between 35- almost 50 athletes on both the men's and women's track and field teams, and scholarships limited to (the equivalent of) 12.6 for men and 18 for women, and those numbers having to fill out both the cross country and track and field rosters.)

Don't see any formal announcement article yet, but just noticed it looks like the track and field rosters have now been populated with some freshmen, a few of whom hadn't been previously noted in this thread. Welcome to all the new Buffs!
I don't know if the roster will have additional freshmen added before the season starts next semester, but those who are added so far, and hadn't been previously listed in this thread, are:

toplaxrecruits.com has added a short article with a little more info on and Q & A (Great things to say about the lax program, the school, and Boulder) with Ms. Donnelly.

Well, on the eve of the start of the early signing period, we finally have our 1st known track and field/ cross country commit for 2017- welcome and congrats to distance runner Gus Newcomb from Middleton HS, Middleton (looks to be next to Madison) Wisconsin!

Some of his results and times from Athletic.net-
Track - http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=6098352#/L0 (Looks like he was a good point producer for his team as a junior in last season's state championship, earning a 3rd place finish in the 1600M and a 4th at 3200M.)

Cross Country - http://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/Athlete.aspx?AID=6098352#/L0 (Earned high 5th place finishes in the state championships both in his junior and senior years.)

Looks like track and field continues its pipeline with nearby Monarch High School, as distance runner Holly Bent from that school has just verbally committed to the Buffs. Welcome and congrats to her!

Some of her results and times from Athletic.net-
Track - http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=5885137#/L0 (In the State championships, she followed up 7th and 3rd place finishes in the 1600M and 3200M, respectively, her sophomore year with 7th and 5th places last season as a junior.)

Cross country- http://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/Athlete.aspx?AID=5885137#/L0 (At state, she finished 4th as a sophomore and 13th recently in her just completed senior season. No results her junior season after September, so assume she may have been injured in the later half of that season?)

Looks like track and field possibly has a couple more commits (probably both officially signed). Although not confirmed yet, welcome to (1) hurdler/ sprinter Aaron McCoy from Cañon City High School and (2) sprinter Jon Ryan Maas from Tom Clark HS in San Antonio TX.

(1) As is also noted in the 2017 class signing thread, Mr. McCoy posted the below instagram showing his signing.

Some of his results and times from Athletic.net - http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=8506939#/L0 (Among many other top results, last season as a junior he won the 300M hurdles at the state championship and finished 3rd in the 200M sprint. He also anchored his team's 4X100M team that went 4th at state, and was also part of the 4X200M relay team that finished 3rd at state.)
Note- They must have some good hurdle coaching at Cañon City, as Mr. McCoy will be joining current Buff sophomore and former Tiger hurdler Trenton Stringari on the team.

-------------------------------------------------------------

(2) My 2nd hand knowledge of Mr. Maas's commitment and signing comes from some friends tweeting their congratulations today.

Some of his results and times from Athletic.net - http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=9287869#/L0
(With Texas's great sprinting tradition, assume its largest classification (6A) has great competition, and Mr. Maas showed very good range and skill last season as a junior, finishing 9th in the 100M dash and 5th in the 400M race at the state championships.)

As noted in the Signing Day thread, found a tweet that shows a previously unknown 2017 lacrosse commit formally signing to join the Buffs, namely defender/ midfielder Eliza Cahill from the Woodlands (Texas) HS, and it looks like Tenacity Texas (or Houston) lacrosse club. As I also said in the signing thread, congrats and welcome to her!

A little info I found on her-
"
Players That Impressed

2017’s

Eliza Cahill, Midfield, The Woodlands, TX, The Woodlands HS
One of the top players on the weekend, Cahill was a force all over the field from winning draw controls to causing turnovers and scoring goals on the attacking end. A tall player who is a former track runner, her speed immediately catches your attention as she excels in the open field and in transition especially.
"

CU Track and Field has sent out the below tweets confirming the signings of the 2 young men, hurdler/ sprinter Aaron McCoy and sprinter Jon Ryan Maas, I'd 1st noted back in post #267. They also re-tweeted the Gus Newcomb tweet I posted back in post #265, so assume that's more official confirmation he's now an official incoming Buff. Once again, congrats and welcome to all 3 of them!
