I dropped by for the last 1.5 hours of it.

    Immediate thoughts:

Scott's running style is so smooth it looks lazy. He had some good runs but also a fumble. Not that impressive a day. Really rough (not surprisingly) in pass blocking. Did break a long run but somebody caught him from behind.

Scott Punting: Not bad. He really gets um out there. They finally did try a fake but Scott got pulled down by Polk of all people before getting the 1st.

Running up the middle on our #1 Defense is just not gonna happen a lot this year.

Cody is way bigger then last year. Last year his arms looked like mine. This year he looks halfway to bodybuilder status. He was the best QB on the field today by far. His out passes still lack enough zip, but he could drop the ball in a garbage can from 40 yards away just about every time.

Hansen got a lot of reps.

There is NO WAY that Speedy doesn't burn his red shirt this year. The guy is incredible. He had a play on an out pass where he just got NAILED as soon as he turned around. He barely stumbled and just powered through the very solid hit before striding into the endzone. He got the most cheers I heard all day. Got Cody all fired up. The guy is short but looks like some sort of beast he is so thick.

Aric Goodman took most (maybe all) of the kicks that I saw. He nailed every single one while I was there.

Safeties played well. Dykes had a great play on a Jfly crossing route to break up a 1st down.

Jfly had an amazing touchdown catch against tight single coverage. He will not be held out of the endzone this year.

Our offensive line is just stellar in pass blocking. I think Cody had over 8 seconds back there on several occasions before throwing to a (finally) open guy. The only time cody went down he tripped over an offensive linemans leg (trunk? Those guys are big!)

Sumler left the scrimmage with a ding.

Moyd had an AWFUL day. Dropped passes, fumbles, you name it. He did not look like he belonged in the mix.

Polk looks like a great fit for our offense with his lateral quickness. Had a chance for a long touchdown catch that he dropped.

Williams was great today, he caught everything that came his way.

Katoa was there, he played one series or so against the Kyle Black led offense. I didn't see him do anything impresive.

Hansen got a couple series worth of reps. Didn't get a lot done. He has some quicks, but not enough to really threaten a defense in a large way. His passes were about as zippy as Cody's.

Ballenger had a good run, but took a LOT of sacks. Not very good at going through his reads. Also he was not with our #1 line.

Nelson looked solid. Capable backup for sure.

No more of that receiver hand off fake crap this year. I don't think I saw them do it once.

Thanks for the recap, but...this play will be back. They did it so many times last year they don't need to practice it anymore. :smile2:

Gimme da CASSSH. CASSSHHH (rep for whoever gets the movie reference)

More thoughts: Cody focuses on the center of the field. On plays that are not rollouts, he rarely looks at a wide receiver breaking down the line. He instead focuses on his TE's or whoever is crossing. Then he looks out for a back or a WR.

There was a play that went for a medium gain when he through to Geer in the middle instead of the WR on the sideline. Geer got a good 15 yards, but the WR was wide open on the sideline and could have gotten 50.

Geer looked to be our best TE by far, so glad he is back, the frosh weren't impressive today. Wallace had some drops and deehan was invisible to me.

They had a formation where it was Speedy and Sumler/Scott in at the same time. They liked to split Speedy out into the slot when they did that.

Sumler ran hard to not a lot of effect today.

that's kind of weird to me. since, given Cody's size the middle of the field is not the most visually available part of the field. i remember noticing at last year's final scrimmage or the spring game this year (forget which) that when they went 7 on 7 they threw a lot to the middle zones and then almost none at all when they went 11 on 11, with the OL and DL going full contact. i assumed that was because that's a hard part of the field for Cody to see over the lines.

Concur with your assessment. It was hard to see a lot at times, would have been nice to have some bleachers out there. Still fun to be there. I was particularly impressed with Rodney Stewart, he will be a lot of fun to watch. Every time he touches the ball it will be exciting... in a good way.

Was it Goodman that hit the 60+ yd FG in the last kick of the scrimmage? At least that was what my count of the yard markers estimated.

Oh, one more thing... I loved the pace of the offense! The up-tempo, no-huddle looked well organized and should be effective in keeping pressure on the defense. I really liked the way they continued to sub in O-linemen throughout.

Also, with that kind of offense, there will be a need to have some good depth at RB... I think we got that this year.

I should've been more clear. i am ashamed because that is a pretty obscure reference and the fact that I knew it right away makes me ashamed that I'm not using my memory for better things, like remembering anything that I learned in school. :sad1:

Oline thought: Givens was playing as RG a lot with the #1 offense. He was listed as a tackle on the roster they were giving out.

    Great report!

Sounds like scott needs to use some stick-um,from peoples reports,he has fumbled frequently,i'm sure those belly crawls will help:smile2:

Can't wait to see stewart this year, sounds like he's a playmaker.

Stewart is gonna be a playmaker, defense looks like they are getting more pressure.Josh smith looked good and I got to say, scott looked like he struggled.

Can't wait to see these youngsters grow and progress, exciting time.

From the looks of the video, we still have a lot of work to do. A lot of dropped passes and fumbles!!:wow:

Rodney Stewart is gonna be fun to watch, he already is in practice. I also think J-Fly is gonna have a big year. He is starting to be a good WR in coverage.

I t was the first scrimmage, lots of time to clean things up. I'd like to see more from scott but I've only been to one practice and he had a couple nice runs, maybe this video didn't show much.

He looked like he was out of shape.

The Good: The tempo of the scrimmage was striking. Very good to see.

The Bad: some of those guys (Scott) looked like they weren't even close to being "adapted"....and looked very tired. Scott was caught from behind by Dykes on that one run BTW.

6 days in, I'm sure that a lot of those guys legs were shot....they'll come around. Just a matter of when.

I agree on just the first scrimmage. And we shouldn't judge everything off a 9 minute video. I was more impressed with Scott the other day as well. I am worried about his fumbles. I think one of his weaknesses in HS was his hands.

I agree about the tempo. It seemed after every play, you could hear the coaches yelling "Get up, get up, get up!" - trying to get everyone moving at a faster pace

According to some stats posted by Adam on the pay site, Scott racked up 86 yds on 14 carries - average of 6.1. I'll take that struggling production every day of the week and twice on Saturday (or Sunday for CSU; Thursday of WVA).

Again from the Rivals board, someone said it was Cha'ppell that caught him...

Either way, Hawk said Scott was nursing a groin and has some catching up to do in the conditioning dept.

Definitely out of shape....he'll come around though. Not really buying the groin so much since he had 14 carries:thumbsup:

it was probably both Cha'ppell and Dykes. He got tackled by 2 or 3 guys from behind and one of them was definitely Dykes.

Either way, I'm not going to worry too much. Being as sore as these guys are at this point in camp is definitely a new experience for 95% percent of them. It always takes a little while to adjust.

Did anyone else notice Speedy wears the same number as Spoles did at KjSU and in San Diego? Speedy has been compared to Sproles a lot on here so I thought I would point it out.
