LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — The 62nd Annual NCAA Skiing Championships are set to begin here Wednesday, the first time the prestigious ski area is hosting the collegiate title meet in 33 years.

The University of Colorado, fresh off a victory in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association (RMISA) Championships, is looking for its 20th national crown in the sport – and technically to defend the 1982 title the Buffaloes captured here. That was the last year the men and women skied in separate championships, as the sport went coed the following year.

Colorado won three of the five western meets, had its skiers win 12 races and post 92 top finishes over the course of the winter. The team was very balanced between the alpine and Nordic squads. New Mexico and Utah won the other two meets, and along with defending champion Denver, are the other favorites from the west; Vermont won all six eastern “carnivals” and is the only school from the east to qualify a full 12-skier team (all six in the west did so).

Edit- NCAA has now added a single live timing and cumulative scoring link page for the Championships- it is http://barttiming.com/eisa/Results15/ncaa15.htm
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________

Scoring in NCAA Skiing- the top 30 finishers of each race earn points. The scores earned for the top 8 finishers from 1st through 8th are 40 (for 1st place)-37-34-31-29-27-25-23. After that, the 9th through 30th places earn one point less for each lower place finish, so for example 9th place earns 22 points, 10th place 21 points, etc., all the way down to the 30th place finisher, who earns 1 point.

    _________________________________________________________________________________________________

Edit- Buff All-Americans- Hadn't included or mentioned anything about skiers earning All-American honors yet, so thought I'd add something now. In skiing, it looks like the top 5 finishers of each of the 8 competitions earn 1st Team All-American designation for that event, while finishers 6-10 are designated 2nd team All-American. Based on this, a running list of Buff All-Americans for this year are-

1st Team All-Americans- Rune Oedegaard (3rd) and Mads Stroem (4th) (Men's Nordic 10K Freestyle Nordic); Maja Solbakken (4th in Women's 15K Classic Nordic); Mads Stroem (2nd) and Rune Oedegaard (3rd) (Men's 20K Classic Nordic)

2nd Team All-Americans- Maja Solbakken (6th), Petra Hyncicova (7th) and Ane Johnsen (10th) (Women's Nordic freestyle); Henrik Gunnarsson (7th in Men's Giant Slalom); Petra Hyncicova (6th) and Ane Johnsen (9th) (Women's 15K Classic Nordic); Thea Grosvold (6th) and Jessica HONKONEN (7th) (Women's Slalom)

I added hopefully helpful links and information near the bottom of the OP.

Good luck to the Buff's ski team!

In case anyone's interested (I also posted this in the thread for the conference championships), I believe scoring for each event is- the top 30 finishers earn points.

The men's 1st Nordic race has begun! In this freestyle race, looks like they start with an ~20 second (???) stagger. The 1st Buff has just started.

This is an event the Buffs should and needs to do VERY well in to win the overall championships, as we have 2 of if not THE top skiiers in the country, and a 3rd who has done well this year.

Quality of the video is good for me. Also, as in the last two years, sounds like they have good announcers who know the sport VERY well, so have high hopes for some good information being provided by them.

1st skiers finishing already, while others haven't even completed their 1st lap. With the stagger start, sounds like it will be MANY minutes before we know how the Buffs have done.

By the way, I haven't found live timing for this race.

Per the announcers, each lap is taking ~12-1/2 minutes for the skiers, so the 2 lap race takes roughly 25-26 minutes overall for the lead skiers.

Looks like the 1st Buff has finished, and was the 5th finisher of the 20 or so who've completed the race so far (with MANY left to go).

Of course, every year is its own championships, but just for reference here is last year's complete scoring for all events, when the Buffs ended up 4th overall- http://i2.turner.ncaa.com/dr/ncaa/n.../2014/03/08/2014ncaaskichampionshipsfinal.pdf . In this event last year, the Buffs earned 83 points, the most they earned in any of their 8 races. CORRECTION- the Buffs got 56 points in this event last year. (The 83 points were in the classical race.)

2nd Buff in- and is in 2nd with a few skiers left. A DU skiier, the 1st starter, is in the lead. Somewhat of an upset as the CU duo generally came in 1-2 in the West, so that won't be happening in these championships.

So, I'm sure, given the dominance of the top 2 Buffs this year, they might have loved to have a few more points, but still an improvement over the 56 points the Buffs earned in this event last year. Way to go!

(Also added it to the original post)- here is the link to NCAA's official live scoring webpage- http://barttiming.com/eisa/Results15/ncaa15.htm .

Per http://barttiming.com/eisa/Results15/EISA/ncaa2015tm.pdf, the Buff's are in the points lead after the men's freestyle with 82 points; quite an improvement over the 56 points they received in that event last year!

This current women's race is huge for the Buffs' chances of winning. Last year, the women's Nordic team was VERY young (I believe all freshmen), and it was the lowest scoring of the Buff's 4 (men's and womens; Alpine and Nordic) teams. I believe many/ most of the Nordic women were fighting illness and or injury a couple weeks ago, but hopefully they're all healthy now. (Just for reference, last year, the women earned 39 points in this event.)

Looks like Utah will win this women's freestyle Nordic race (unofficially have 1st, 5th, and 9th), but Buffs with an awesome performance and improvement from last year with 6th, 7th and 10th place finishes!

Since Utah only earned 40 points in the men's freestyle race, I think the Buffs should have a decent overall points lead after day one. (Official results following shortly.)

I would recommend people contact the P12 network and ask that events like this be televised. With CU and UU the top two teams in the country, it would seem natural that the P12 net would want to televise an event where one of their members stands an excellent chance of winning a national championship.

I would think with this being an NCAA event, it would have to be one of the national sports networks (ESPN, NBC Sports, CBS Sports, etc.) that would have to cover this. Selfishly, I like it the way it is (thank you Comcast broadband for the necessary speed)- as I get to see EVERYTHING live streamed. If a regular network (including the Pac 12) DID have the contract, I'd be worried they'd so some one-two hour tape delayed summary show compressing all the different events into one "dramatic" package (I hate when they do that- Pac 12 did it for the Pac 12 cross country (running) championships this past year). Also, I think these NCAA announcers are GREAT compared to what the networks would probably provide.

Note- If there's any chance the Pac 12 network might be able to possibly cover the event, this is probably the best time to lobby for that, as the Buffs are hosting next year's championships (being held in Steamboat Springs).

Results are now official for the day (http://barttiming.com/eisa/Results15/EISA/ncaa2015tm.pdf). Top 6 in points are:

    Buffs 155 points!
    Utes 131
Vermont and New Mexico- tied at 106
    DU 93
    Dartmouth 88

(Those 6 also constitute the top 6 nationally ranked teams coming into the championships.)

3 more LONG days left in the championships- keep it up Buffs! The exciting giant slalom races tomorrow next on tap, where 10ths of seconds (let alone skiing off course) can be the difference between victory and the "agony of defeat".

Great start! I'm so used to CU having to come from behind, so I'm assuming this is a really good sign.
