Skiers Primed For NCAA Title Run (BUFFS WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!)

So- skiers start in 2nd run for top 30 skiers determined by their 1st runs- 30th fastest starts 1st; fastest starts 30th.

1st Buff (17th after 1st run) Hietenen makes it down, in 5th of finishers so far. 2 Utes have already made it down successfully, one is in 1st of the completed skiers.

3rd and final Buff men's starter Gunnarsson comes down in 2nd with 10 fastest skiers left.

Oh Boy- unofficial results of the men's race, now completed, mean CU and Utah still VERY close, with the Buff 7 point lead going into today now a still tiny 10 points with only the women's slalom 2nd run left to run. And, DU definitely in it, the 98 point lead going into today is down to 45 points after their impressive 2-3-4 finish.

Edit- unofficial point totals for the 3 championship favorites from men's slalom was DU- 102, CU- 49 and Utah 46.

So, just for reference as to how close it is- after the 1st run, IF the women skiers ended up in exactly the same positions after their 2nd runs (which WON'T happen), DU would have 77 points, CU 57 and Utah 42 for the women's race, which would give the Buffs the championship over DU AND Utah (they'd be TIED for 2nd) by 25 points.

Of course, with what can happen in Alpine skiing, where one second difference can equal 10-20 points difference to each skiers score, let alone losing A LOT of points if a skier doesn't finish, it's still anyone's championships among the 3 main contenders.

Women's 2nd runs beginning now. Like the men's, 2nd runs will be run in descending order for the top 30 1st run skiers- 30th fastest skier after 1st run just went 1st, fastest will go 30th.

Edit- Again, Buff skiers were 17th, 10th and 8th after their 1st runs.

1st Pioneer has finished. 22nd after the 1st run, she's 1st of the skiers so far, 21 faster 1st run skiers to go.

1st Ute (20th after 1st run) comes in 3rd of the finishers so far- 19 fastest still to go.

2nd Ute, 18th after 1st run, comes down and takes the lead. Then 1st BUFF comes down and takes the lead. 16 fastest still to go.

3rd and final Ute comes down successfully and is 3rd of the finishers so far. 12 fastest (including 2 remaining Buffs and Pioneers) left to go.

Last Buff (Honkonen), 8th after 1st run, and is in 2nd! All the Buffs are safely down the mountain! Only 2 Pioneers left to run out of 6 skiers left. I think this means at minimum the Buffs have beaten the Utes, and don't know if DU can make up enough points or not!

Actually, recalculating the UNNOFICIAL results, and Buffs may have a 28 point win pending any further adjustments. Glad for the extra padding. (Edit- actual win ended up 27 points officially.)

Congrats to the women's Alpine team- great results under what must have been a LOT of pressure- unofficially finishing 6th, 7th and 15th.
