Apparently, there's a thread over at netturds (no, I won't link) about a couple guys who are supposedly close to the admin who are saying that there is a plan in the works to bring in Coach Mac for a couple years to run the program while another CU insider (EB, Embree, maybe even Logan, who knows?) is groomed for the HC position. Apparently, this all came out at the Buffs for Life golf tournament this last weekend. I guess Coach Mac was there, as was GB. Conspicious by his absence was Hawkins.

My first reaction to this is that Coach Mac, while we all love him dearly, is 70 years old and has been out of the game for 16 years (hard to believe, isn't it?)

My next thought is that if this is true, DO IT RIGHT FREAKING NOW!!!! Don't wait. Make the move today. Honestly, if this is in the works, there's no reason to wait for this season to run it's course. Just do it. The assistants are all available. NFL teams don't start training camp for another 4 weeks. College camps don't start for another 6 weeks. If they are going to do it, now is the time.

If this is true, I am all in. Even though Coach Mac is 70, he could restore credibility and luster. I'm sure whoever the "groomed assistant" is would be running most of the show anyway.

    Absolutely no reason to wait.

After writing my response, I was starting to think that maybe your post was a joke to see who takes the bait. I sure hope not.

Not a chance. 1st: The reason Hawkins wasn't there was because of his daughter's wedding. There was no conspiracy and no reason to read anything about his absence. 2nd: No way in hell would McCartney imply that he'll take over. He supports the University and Hawkins until Hawkins is gone. THere would be no back stabbing by McCartney. 3rd: Bohn would not seek a replacement now or even imply that he is searching. 4th: McCartney has consistently said that he is done with coaching and he'd be 71 next year.

1st: Hawkins was also absent at the recent Buff Club golf tournament. Not that it makes any difference to me one way or the other, but I'm getting the impression that he's starting to check out even more than he has been. 2nd: I wasn't there, I'm just hearing this 4th hand, so maybe there's nothing to it at all, but it was reported by more than one person. 3rd: Bohn has said he wants to continue the momentum. This would be a great way to do it. 4th: The plan is reportedly to have this be a very short term deal. Just 2-3 years while a replacement is groomed.

In the end, I have no idea whether this has any validity or not. It seems far fetched, for sure. On the other hand, if there is truth to it, it needs to be done right away.

I thought the "Hawkins isn't here because of his daughter's wedding" was strange.

Hawkins' daughter's wedding was SATURDAY in Boise. According to one of the online articles I read this morning, Hawkins decided to "drive to Oregon" after the wedding. I have only been married once (that was one time too many), but one time was enough to know that the father of the bride's job is done about 2 hours AFTER the wedding ends. Are you telling me that Dan Hawkins couldn't make it to a state-wide football coaches' press event because his daughter got married THREE DAYS prior?? There are no planes from Boise - Denver during those three days or something?

A more likely scenario in my mind is -- Hawkins went in to Bohn and told him about his daughter's wedding, and Bohn jumped at the chance to let Hawkins off the hook. Hawkins is a media liability these days - having him come to the state coaches' press event would cause more harm than good.

It would also give those in attendance a chance to test the waters of this proposed arrangement without the chance of Hawkins overhearing something. Bohn seems to like trial balloons. That could be what we're seeing here.

    LOL at the picture.

I think this sort of thing has a lot of merit, and is a trend on the upswing. We have already seen Bill Snyder return to KSU - probably only for a brief time until they can get their program back in a little better condition.

If McCartney can handle the media responsibilities and delegate the X and O's aspect to some good assistant coaches, he would be fine. (I am not sure how "connected" he is with anyone outside of Colorado/Michigan circles, though)

the far more likely scenario is that coach mac would be asked back to head a search committee.

I don't believe the rumor at all but I really would like to see this happen. Look no further than Paterno, Bowden or Snyder for proof that an old guy can still get it done. I would love to see it happen if it was for a brief 2 or 3 year stint to get the new guy up to speed etc. Anymore time then that I think it could turn into a liability but I'm all in for it happening. Football is not rocket science especially at the college level. You get the best guys and put them in the best positions to make plays. Recruiting is the biggest part Coach Mac can still do this I don't care what people say

Are Boulder, CU and Couch McCartney prepared to revisit the subject of homosexuality and the strong role of males?

SD has this same rumor on Rivals now, but from a different source.

Mac wants to get back into coaching.

My thought is that if he wants to be the CEO of the program, has the budget to hire a tremendous staff for the Xs and Os work, and can bring in someone like Jon Embree to be the Assistant Head Coach (in-waiting HC) to handle the administrative stuff... then I think this would be an actual home run hire.

Mac is the best we could find for increasing donations, increasing media exposure, motivating the team, guiding the personal development of the players in the program, and building the relationships with high school coaches and prospect parents that are the key to recruiting. Basically, he needs to be Colorado's JoePa and he's 14 years younger (and always has been at least as energetic). If this can happen, then it needs to happen.

im all for tradition... but this guy has coached in almost 20 years... athletes are different... ATHLETICS as a whole are different... im sorry i don't want a 70 year old man who hasnt coached in 20 years roaming a sideline...especially if he is grooming his replacement...who would want to play for him... most of the kids he is recruiting were 2 years old last time he coached a game...im sorry bad bad bad idea... search committee yes... head coach no...

I still think if he surrounded himself with good coaches (Mac always seemed to be able to do this, even when his coaches were leaving a couple every year) I think he would really be a nice hire. He left in good graces. He has remained loyal to the program.

And Dick Vermeil didn't coach for almost 20 years and he won a Super Bowl.

If this was an Osbourn/pelini type situation i'd be comfortable with it but who fits the Pelini part of the mold for us?

Well i think Mac's energy, and charisma are more than enough to make up for the fact that he hasn't coached in a while. Also, while most kids probably aren't familiar, parents and coaches most certainly are, and those are some of the most important sells in the recruiting process. I think if anyone can do it, its Mac.

I think this move would bring back a lot of the fan base that has been turned off by Hawk as well as bring back established traditions from the McCartney era. It seems to be a good move considering the fact that there doesn't seem to be too many viable alternatives. I rather hold out 2-3 years and land a coach more in line with the McCartney pedigree than take our chances on another Hawk-type experienced coach.
