Washington Game --- Official Thread (8pm FS1)

Miller isn't healthy yet from what I've heard. It's a bummer, but at this point Kaiser can't be on the starting unit. He's had four chances, and has essentially failed all four chances.

Sigh, that would be disappointing.

If that is the case, what exactly is the plan going forward at tackle, both now and next season?

Btw, multiple student chants of "sucks to be a CSU Ram last" last night. They are lame
 Gross. Can't wait to get them off the schedule. CSU should not be mentioned ever after that game. That said, had three CSU buddies text me last night all said they played closer with Alabama than we did with Washington. I guess they forgot the fact we had the ball with 2 minutes in the third to tie the game, and they were down 41-10 when Alabama pulled their starters.

I don't understand why they don't put Huckins at Center and Lynott to guard and Haigler to tackle. Maybe I missed something with Huckins, but why didn't he play last night? Haigler has regressed this season as well. I would think Moretti will come in at tackle next year and you will see a decent amount of redshirt freshman play. I've heard they've been very solid during practice.

Let's be honest: the two easiest changes are the ones everyone talks about-Bernardi and Jeffcoat. Do you really need a rolodex for a TE coach hire?

BTW, the most logical hire to make if you are going to make a change is Helfrich.
I could live with Helfrich as OC. Easily.

Yes on Bernardi and Jeffcoat as weak links. Loyalty will get you beat.

Let's encourage Bernardi to "retire" after the season and replace him with a coach that has very strong ties to Polynesian/Samoan communities. Doesn't even matter what the guy actually coaches just as long as he can open up a pipeline for us to recruit studs (linemen mostly) from Hawaii, California and Utah.

I miss Koavalu and Touapu dearly

I can't find a box score, but it seems like we didn't have any depth at RB. Bushart (sp - 3 carries for 1 yard coming in) had a few carries, Evans? wasn't there expected to be some depth there?

If only we knew what would happen if we played CSU head-to-head. That would be the real test.

Sorry for the rant but:

@Duff Man was right a few pages back. Our D-Line isn't some part of a Juco plan, it is representative of an almost total failure to recruit P5 level HS defensive linemen. Our offensive line right now is another example of a multiple year failure to recruit P5 level offensive linemen. The only positive there is that last years class definitely looks like the level of class we need to have and this years commits while not as flashy as last years look good as well.

Problem is on both sides of the line that unless you are recruiting the elite prospects these guys aren't plug and play, they take some time to develop both physically and in the mental aspects of the game. We can't just rest on a couple of good classes, that has to become the norm.

The fact that our upperclassmen on the OL can be so bad and there isn't a jr. and soph class ready to take their positions from them shows the gap that solid teams can't afford.

D line is another example of that. Yes we have gotten lucky with some decent Jucos but they aren't difference makers and the depth is non-existent. Why doesn't a team like Washington wear down on the line like we do? Because for every starter they have one or two other guys who are almost as good who they can rotate in without a significant drop off. Somebody gets hurt and the third guy is a reasonable option.

The issue of Bernardi and Jeffcoat has to be addressed. If we were a Bama or an SC or one of those other schools that can get a decent recruiting class simply by offering a bunch of top kids and making a few visits while calling some HS coaches we could afford to carry assistants who aren't effective recruiters but that isn't us.

Not every coach has to be Chev but in our situation every coach has to be at least an effective recruiter, we can't afford dead weight and from where I sit those two are mostly dead weight. The each coach a position where you can bring in a young, energetic guy who is willing to pile up airline miles and can connect with kids.

Our recruiting classes have gotten better than they were, almost every guy we are committing has at least some other P5 offers and some have a bunch. We are no longer taking a bunch of MWC level guys hoping they turn into something they aren't.

What we aren't getting though is many of those guys who the top programs want. Guys with the USC, UW, Mich, etc. offers. No we shouldn't expect a whole class of those guys at this point but we should be seeing more of them each year, and not just kids with Colorado connections. This again is where having a full staff of effective recruiters lets you put your most effective ones on some of these difference makers.

By the way Montez is another example of the recruiting failures of the staff. No he isn't a failure. There are more than a few commentators outside of Buff land who are impressed with his talent and who think he has an excellent future. We know though that he was recruited as a project. He didn't play HS in a high level of competition and didn't have the kind of coaching that QBs from California, Texas, Florida, etc. get. Why is it that we had a massive gap between a fifth years senior in Sefo and a RS Soph like Montez? Where are the QBs in between to bridge that gap.

Now we can look at our depth chart and see Montez followed by Noyer followed by Lytle, followed by Stenstrom but why did it take 4+ years to get to the point were we actually have a QB progression. We still don't have one at RB and TE is a wasteland (Bernardi?) How much of Lindsay's apparent drop off is due to not having a Sean Irwin out there making holes for him at critical times.

Thankfully we aren't the 2012 (or 2013-2015) Buffs. Much of the game last night we looked like a team that with some breaks and without major mistakes could hang with a top 10 program. Now though it is time to take the next step. Good enough isn't good enough any more. To get there recruiting needs to make the next step and that means we can't afford to have coaches on the staff who don't carry their weight recruiting unless they bring something very special otherwise. We have some people who don't do either.

Sooo...what Duff said?

What's the shelf life on the "we were in the cellar" excuse?
Another year. How do you think recruiting should have gone during those years? The majority of the freshman that were recruits during and after th 10 win season, are on the bench. I just don't see how any of you can expect more at this point.

I think the story of this game is the problems that plagued the team the first 3 weeks, continued to plague the team against a team they couldn't afford to make those mistakes against.

Also, We're playing what, 5 guys on the defensive line? Jackson, Franke, Mulumba, Edwards, Tuiloma, and I guess Frazier a little bit. I think it's been a bit overlooked because the defense has been good up to this point that we lost 3 guys who were expected to be significant contributors coming into the year in Umu (when does he get to come back), Falo, and Julmisse. Be real nice to have those guys right now, especially Falo who would likely be starting.

Also not understanding the substitution patterns on defense. Callier barely got any run last night. Did not see Sparaco at all. Don't remember seeing Coleman. Seemed like we didn't run any exotic blitzes or even use pass rush packages in obvious pass situations.

2018 class has to be a big step up.

I had a similar hope/interpretation as Brian. I think this was really good for Montez. I saw a humbled, more realistic QB1 who was ready to hopefully take some more coaching and reaching out to teammates for support. I'd really like to know the collective mindset of the Oline post game as well, but was really encouraged to see Montez where he was mentally. I think he matures in a bigger way after this game. Hope our O and D lines respond similarly, I really hope to see that Oline show up soon. They were the unsung last year, really want them to do well.
