Jimmy Lake - DC Washington

I know you hate Air Raid and were always opposed to Leach or his system in Boulder, but it does work and win. And the version that Dana runs has a lot more potential due to the run game and use of TEs instead of being so one dimensional like a traditional Air Raid.

I do worry that what Lake would bring requires a bit of a rebuild and retooling of the roster before it could be successful. Do we have the talent to do what Washington does?

I hate the Air Raid because there is always some excuse for when it goes wonky. Mike Leach is some mad genius and cannot understand weather (unless he delivers some HILARIOUS quip about it during the week). Wazzu was fortunate to score 15 tonight.

Lincoln Riley is great, even if he ignores one side of the football (and with OU's talent, ignorance is a best case scenario). Holgorsen is great because he wins (and loses some) games scoring in the 40s.

Is the goal to not rock the boat in 2019 or is it to set the tone for next decade in CU football?

Well, Air Raid is a lot of coaches right now with a lot of big offenses: Leach, Holgorsen, Riley, Briles, Kingsbury, Norvell, Littrell, Heupel, Sumlin, etc. It hasn't won a national championship but it has won a ton of football games.

P.S. Someone who has an Air Raid background from the defensive side is Aranda (also DC at Hawaii for run n shoot). His defense with an OC like Spavital would be very intriguing to me.
They do win a lot of games. My concern is that they(WVU) seem to underperform when it matters (vs. tough team especially in bowl game). Including their offense.

wvu and wsu have been better running offenses than they get credit for. and, did you see the size of the wsu ol tonight-- they averaged 300+ and they can still move. wsu didn't lose because they run a version of the air raid (which has been even further branched by holgerson into more power plays). they lost because uw had better athletes. a well-coached disciplined traditional offense and defense that has superior athletes won. that shouldn't be a surprise.

Yep. Especially playing in slop where it's much harder to cover up a talent disadvantage by moving the game away from the basics of who is bigger, stronger and faster & can block and tackle better.

Isn't "bigger, stronger and faster & can block and tackle better" where do we want to go long term though? And if so, I'm not sure if Dana is the best candidate to lead us to that direction.

When air raid works, it really works well. And when it doesn't work, it's really really ugly. We have seen the ugly side in this game, as well as the WVU-ISU game. Don't we want something still giving us the best chance to win even if QB or some of the skill players are having a bad day?

Some thoughtst
The arrogance sort of rubs me the wrong way.

Herbstreit just now on Big12 (paraphrase): "the lack of defense makes games like WVU vs OU borderline unwatchable.". Agree.

If Offensive coaches is the trend, I hope we go against it.

Michigan and Ohio St have identical offensive production but Michigan is dominant Defensively. It's weather proof.

SEC is the lowest scoring conference.

Ohio St has an undisciplined and fundamentals lacking D. No thanks on Schiano.

Ha, this is your argument against the air raid? Nitpicking Top ten teams?

I would gladly take the success of any of the teams that you mentioned.

Yeah, like the arrogance, but do wonder if he might really think of himself as being above the CU job.
I like the confidence and intimidation factor with Lake.

I'm not sure if we could get him or not but I sure hope RG at least has a serious sit-down with him. We'll see.

While the style of football is different, I do not think we lose with either coming here. It would end up being so much of an improvement over what we have seen. I happen to sit on the Holgo side of it the ball but I do agree, you have to play defense to at least a competent level. We did not see that last night out of WVU. He would need to go get a better DC. WVU lost because the clock ran out and it was really who would have the ball last. I think it was a fun game to watch just like I thought the KC Rams games was fun to watch.

I would not be pissed if Lake was the guy. God I just want a competant coach who can win 8-10 a year, bein contention and play for conference championships and make a run every once in a while athe CFP. It is kind of fun to get all worked up on options especially when we have absolutely no idea where RG is going with this hire. Not rumors about anyone.

Enjoy the ride and let's keep having fun playing AD and making our cases.

Just watched UW D vs WSU.
They get so much out of their front D.

It's clear that Lake is a good DB coach and great recruiter. Still need to do some real due diligence of his readiness to be a HC and his leadership skills.

I like the fact that Petersen values him. But there is no doubt that long time Petersen cohort and DC, Kwiatkowski, put the D together. So make sure that due diligence is done.

It's really both. They are both incredible. As a Husky fan I wouldn't trade either for any coach at Alabama so long as we have Petersen. Seriously. Kwiatkowski has mastered the entire defense whereas Lake specialized in DBs, at least until this year.

There is no doubt Lake is a rising star. As amazing as Kwiatkowski is, the fact he respected Lake so much he was willing to step down to "co" DC speaks volumes about his temperament and dedication to Petersen's system.

I will say that I've never seen a better DB coach at UW than Lake. Ever. He is also our top recruiter and I would expect that as long as he has input into the DB's any DB going to his program should expect to sniff the NFL barring injury.

Also of note is the entire Husky defense has worked on the rugby-style tackling that the Seahawks implemented and popularized. They are taught to never lead with the helmet. It is better for player safety and improves the players fundamentals with tackling.

The only worry I would have in hiring Jimmy Lake is the fact that he has only been a co-(DC) coordinator for a year. Otherwise I don't think he would find a better program than CU to get his first HC gig.

As a Husky fan I really hope we retain him a little longer. As a person, I hope Jimmy gets the opportunity he is seeking and I wish him the best of luck with future success, wherever that may be. I would certainly root for him to do well at CU when they're not playing UW.

I read this and thought “What a rational, great Huskies fan! Hope he/she sticks around after this week. “. Then I scrolled up and saw who it was. The resident rational Huskies fan. And here I was hoping we would have another one to keep you company! Lol

Strange thing from last night: udub ran basically the same defense against wazzu as they did against Colorado.

The new wrinkle was the wide-nine three tech on both sides that they used about 3-4x to exaggerate the illusion of a man advantage to create a running lane up the middle. Of course, that never worked since udub’s interior DL is fast enough to get TFLs in a world where wazzu’s tackles don’t know who to block.

Methinks udub wins last night regardless of the weather. Gaskin and Ahmed would’ve been difference makers. udub’s superior athletes on D make wazzu bend to their will.

Damn shame that we’ll have to wait so long if he is indeed the guy.

Not necessarily...RG could make a trip up to Seattle today to interview Lake and skip the game at Cal if he's so inclined. Then make an announcement next weekend if Lake is the man for the job. I highly doubt that we'll hear anything before next weekend anyway. Will still have two weeks before the early signing period if an announcement is made by December 3rd.

I watched the KC-LAR and OU-WVU games and was bored, that is not exciting football. ****ty defense is an awful thing to watch.

We fired MacIntyre because he couldn't win the games that mattered which, for him, was mostly win #6. But it also includes two embarrassingly bad games to end 2016. The Air Raid, and frankly and philosphy that ignores defense, has yet to win anything meaningful. Sign me up for complementary offense, defense, and special teams, as THAT is a method of winning a lot AND winning championships.

It is where we want to go. It is not what we have on our roster right now and I don't know how long it will take to get us there. Maybe the young players are poised to grow up and we can be that. I worry, though, about it ending up being a slower build than we want.

Yeah, like the arrogance, but do wonder if he might really think of himself as being above the CU job.

How many guys with a year's worth of coordinator experience get looks at power 5 jobs? After these comments, if Lake wants this job, he needs to be the guy. A guy with a bit more swagger fits here after six years of "You're my dream".

Lake was interviewed by husky sports guys and said he lives seattle and just bought a home In Bellevue and that he would be there for awhile. Coachspeak?

I wonder if RG even has the guys listed here on his radar.

What? Of course he does. Where else would he get his candidates from? This is allbuffs after all, the smartest community on earth. I’m sure he personally called a few mods for their opinions.

Would Lake have more leverage if he said he wanted to leave for a HC job? Also, would the players trust him as much if he said he would be leaving soon?
