******Official RMS Game Thread******

Game basically played out as Adam predicted. CSU hit on plays and got their offense moving, but CU still just better. CU has questions about the secondary. Colin Hill was very good.

I was surprised at our lack of QB pressure and LB play in the first half. Montez continued his inconsistent play. RBs, TEs and WRs showed very well.

Still, CSU showed why this game is so dangerous. After 4 years or losing, some in epic beat down fashion, they came out as fired up as we have seen in awhile. And credit Bobo for getting them in position to capitalize on that.... But ultimately that wasn't going to carry them all game.

I slept well. I took solace in the fact that we took their absolute best punch and still won by 3 TDs.

Defense didn't attack, they reacted. It got better as the game went on but it was apparent as players hesitated as they thought about what to do.

The first CSU TD the corner was trying to get teammates attention as a was covering 2 WR with no help. He was guessing whether to take the underneath route or the deep ball, and the safety came over too late to help.

No doubt CSU was playing with more emotion, focus, and resolve than we've seen in a few years. I was stressed out the entire game.

Did anyone notice viska limping off the field late in the 4th?. Any injury news out of the game?.

I think we can safely say CB is going to be a weak position throughout the season. Just gotta hope the LBs look a lot better going forward.

I was impressed with how physical the CB group played, they are not shy about hitting and hitting hard. The DL and LB play left me appreciating whole DB group in this game.

Agreed. On the bright side this may be the worst we look all season, if the coaching staff is a good coaching staff.

Other things to take note of was the variety of play calls on offense, commitment to the run, Fontenot and Mangham running hard and downhill. Also a big hats off to MT it’s not easy to win first games with new kids, new coaches, transfers, new schemes and a lot of contrition. There are things to criticize but I think there were a lot of good things to mention.

And the DL. Seriously, there wasn't a single position group that played well on defense. A few 'flash' plays, but no consistency. Ok, enough of me beating on the defense. Here's to hoping for big adjustments this week.

I thought this was pretty cool. From Howell:

"CU punter Alex Kinney, who is from Fort Collins, played against CSU five times in his career and finished 5-0.
Kinney is the only known player in CU history to go 5-0 against one opponent – while playing in all five games – during their career. Because he was injured last season in the second game, Kinney was able to take a redshirt and come back for a fifth season.
According to CU, the only other player that could have been 5-0 against an opponent is Harry Gamble, who lettered six times from 1891-96. CU went 5-0 against Denver during those years, but because there are no participation records from then, it’s unknown if Gamble played in all five games."

Coach Bobo was not pleased with the refs.

Colorado State coach Mike Bobo criticized Pac-12 officials after Friday's season-opening loss to Colorado in Denver, saying the rivalry game is too big not to have officials from a neutral conference.

The Rams fell 52-31 to the Buffaloes, their fifth straight loss in the Rocky Mountain Showdown, which has been played in Denver since 2010. According to the series contract, the home team provides officials for the game. Colorado served as the home team Friday, so a Pac-12 crew worked the game.

"I don't understand it. It's too big a game not to have neutral refs," Bobo told reporters.

Bobo took issue with a fumble ruling against Colorado State early in the second half, with the Rams trailing 24-21. Officials ruled that Colorado safety Aaron Maddox jarred the ball loose from Colorado State's Marvin Kinsey Jr. before Kinsey hit the ground. A replay review upheld the ruling, and Colorado scored soon after to take a 10-point lead.

"I mean, it's bull crap. It's bull crap," said Bobo, who has never beaten Colorado. "It's big, too big ... You tell a team to ease up and running back to stop, and a play's going and then they reward [Colorado] with a fumble."

After sleeping on it, I'm feeling pretty good about things.

Everything we were told about the type of football Tucker wants to play was seen last night. We're going to develop into a physical football team.

We appear to be well coached. For an opener, there weren't any big mistakes. No turnovers, few penalties, and special teams was great.

Defense struggled with knowing its rules and with taking bad angles to the ball. That got cleaned up a lot in the 2nd half. My biggest ongoing concern is that they didn't do a good job of getting off of blocks.

Looks like we did very well with the grad transfers at LT, TE and S. Didn't give up any sacks, ran the ball very well, touchdown throw to a TE and 2 INTs from the S.

Biggest worry: I'm very concerned about Montez after last night.

So of you fans are insufferable and these live threads remind me why I don't post in the football forum much. One would think we are the worse football team in the country reading this thread.

I mean we were going back and forth against one of the worst teams in the country for most of the game, so its very possible that we might be one of the worst this season....

But oh no! You MUST post in this forum more, please? What can we do to convince you to post more???

i think this is spot-on correct. the corner at the top of the screen was waving for help/shift. it didn't happen; he had to guess and we got burned. total coverage/communication breakdown. that epitomized for me what was wrong with the defense last night. yeah, we aren't the most talented/experienced defense across the board, but the failures to execute the defense were troubling. we won't get away with that against anyone other than lowly sheep this year. the good news is it is coachable and that's the first game.

I remember Harry. Good player and even better person.

Biggest worry: I'm very concerned about Montez after last night.

i'm going to be "that guy" for a minute and suggest that perhaps it will be ok. he had a really rocky first half. some bad reads and poor throws, etc. but, he did rally and play better as the game went on. he's in, what, his 4th offense in 5 years or something? i think he needed to get settled in and feel comfortable.

what we saw last night, as a body of work, was who montez has been for us-- he's a guy that can make every throw and look like a first rounder. and he's also a guy who sometimes has a hard time seeing the checks, or making the right throw, and who sometimes is over-amped. a good running game and a game plan that includes the tight ends can help him.

I came to the same conclusion. Fifth year senior that started every game the past two seasons and he is no better now then he was his first game as a sophomore starter.
