Bench Montez (9-14 edition)

Well Monfo showed up and played lights out. I think this should be the end of the Bench Montez thread for a while. Although, there were crazy stats put up by a bunch of PAC-12 QBs this week, he should be seriously considered PAC 12 offensive player of the week. Literally, he came of the canvas and provided a knock-out. I think it was genius that he was a captain this week. It showed the coaches confidence in him. Much better than seeing Cody Hawkins go out there game after game.

Props to all the players and coaches.

Montez elevated the standard by which he should be judged. We know what he’s capable of doing. For the team to achieve its goals, he must perform up to this standard consistently.

Coach Tucker reiterated that a consistently high level of execution is the standard. As a fifth year player and three year starter, this is not an unreasonable criterion for Montez

Agreed on that. It is not an unreasonable criteria for a high level of execution. I would just say this, if SM puts the Buffs into position to win 9-10 games (he already has 4) then he has done his job. Although MT and staff have done an excellent job, there will be some games where the Buffs are out-schemed or out-coached. It just happens, as do some bad road games for even great college QBs. Also, there will be more and more tape of the Buff's offense this year. Lastly, a lot depends on how the OL performs. I do believe that SM had his bell rung in the 2nd Q of the AFA game, and the OL totally broke down on those series. Yet, SM still rallied in the 4th Q.

Montez can be a player. We expect him to consistently execute. I certainly hope that the team wins 9-10 games. Mel Tucker will be the national coach of the year if that happened.

Your assessment of the USAFA game is off. Montez lost the game. Full stop. He received adequate protection, but failed to step up into the pocket and throw to his hots. There were plenty of plays when he had either open running lanes or receivers to advance drives. He hit neither because he was overly sensitive to pressure. If he played up to the standard he’s set for himself, CU wins that game handily. Instead, the team lost.
