2021 Official Fall Camp Thread

I can't believe your not talking about Greg Brown being back? Our D was legit and was sad to see him leave.
His coaching career started in 1981. I have no doubt he is a positive force being a volunteer defensive assistant, and that's about as far as it will go.

This comes from someone who loved his CU Secondaries in 1991-93, 2005-10, and again in 2011-12 (DC for that last stint).

Texas was missing 18 players in their 2-deep including 6 captains and 3 starters on the Oline. Colorado was missing Lang, Miller, Landman, Sami, Brady Russell, Shenault and a couple other lesser contributors.

We got mudholed - who else were we missing that would have prevented that beat down? Both teams were missing players, but one team dominated. The excuses for these performances unrelated to talent is lame at this point. We got whipped because of talent, plain and simple, not injuries.
Landman was the whole defense.

No amount of coaching was going to beat Texas. They were much better than us at every position. You can’t put that at this staff’s feet
Let’s not pretend that was even close to a full strength Texas team either. It may not predict how this team will perform, but that game illustrated the gigantic gap in talent and depth Dorrell and staff have to overcome.
Sadly had we been full strength we didn't have enough athletes to compete with a Texas team that was missing a bunch of key guys.

Be honest, how many players on our roster would get an offer at Texas? How many of our starters would be on their 3 deep?

You can get excited about coaching and certain individuals players but when their backups are notably better athletes at 7-9 positions than our starters then even a decent effort on their part results in an easy win.

The beauty of every football season is how it all unfolds. All the prognostication and references to prior seasons are just a bunch of bull ****. I am excited once again to see the Buffs go out and win some football games.
Go Buffs win the south win the Pac!

Espinoza? What does he have to do with this?
poster.child!

To expand on my post above, the ILB coach was fired (hint he was also the DC). The drop-off behind Landman was noticeable, but Landman seemed more like the heart and soul and the D lost it's focus and it's spine with his injury. THAT was coaching more than personnel imo.

what the **** GIF

Cancelled the game???? And the true reflection of the team we had last year was probably 5-7 at best if we play a full schedule. Let's not kid ourselves about a 4-2 record in a f*cked up season.
Why are we 5-7 in a full season, but Liberty, Coastal Carolina, Louisiana, Ball State, etc all get love? Boggles my mind.

You listed 10 guys playing 7 positions. That’s not depth.
Isn’t that EXACTLY the definition of depth? It’s not 10 guys, of course, it’s more. He just listed 10 of the “guys.”
Last year we had ONE serviceable ILB. Now I see at least three. (Sorry JVD seems better suited to a career as a matador.) Depth has improved. But solving depth problems is rarely a one year fix, even though the portal has changed a lot.

To be fair, it isn’t. Depth at this level means having a 2 deep that can play. But TSchek also didn’t list about 4-5 other guys that can play and will be playing a lot on the front 7.

Of course...my point was the phrasing of the sentence... "10 people who can play 7 positions.." AND.. as you point out... there are a number of people not listed in that "10 for 7" statement...

There had to have been a serious scheme issue if they defense fell apart that fast when he went out right? He is a stud but having the entire defense revolve around one player doesn’t seem like a good plan.

I think he's a major difference maker from a pure on-field, making plays standpoint, but I also think his leadership was sorely missed. I wouldn't be surprised if his injury took the wind out of the entire defense and the confidence immediately went down hill.
I might be misremembering, but I could have sworn I read an article about how Landman was the only person that Summers gave the on-field freedom to make adjustments and reads pre-snap. So once he went down, not only did the team lose its best defender, it also lost the only guy that could recognize something from the offense and switch it up.

Here's one write-up by Adam that mentions it but again, thought I read something more concrete about this.

A lot of people on this board had Ham playing as a true frosh, despite not having actually shown up in Boulder.
Year 3, has me concerned.

No. I’ve already defined depth. A body does not equal depth. You can’t go from a player who’s at 99 quality to a player with 49 quality and call it depth. Depth is when you have a 99 and the next guy is an 85. Yes, he is worse, but he is not substantially worse.

I also agree with your definition of depth, and stand by my statement that we do have quality depth in the front 7 at CU currently.

We will see how it transpires. We both are making faith based statements just in different directions. As duff identified, for instance, the MIKE depth is really bad.
It isn't "really bad" in my estimation though. If you assume that Landman is ready to go, I believe that we have 4 ILB's that can play (Lamb, Barnes, Perry), 5 if you want to include JVD (which as an aside, would require that he make significant improvements over last year). I can't really get in to details, other than to qualify my belief that we have quality depth in the front 7 as being based on personnel packages that CU will likely be running on D for a good portion of our schedule.

Also, agree that this is all prognostication, and the proof will be in the pudding' so to speak.

But we’re gonna play Landman and one of Lamb, Barnes, and Perry next to Landman. JVD is an afterthought since he’s terrible. The faith part is based upon one of the three being a quality-ish starter and the backups not being substantially worse.

That's the way I understood it, and that's fair. We'll just have to wait and see. UNC should be a walk in the park, aTm will absolutely kick our ass in all likelihood, so I am looking to Minny and after to make this collective assessment.
