August 13 Scrimmage

I just got back to the lab a few minutes ago and since i have a lot of stuff to take care of (the price you pay for a long, football filled lunch) I only have time for a few quick things:

Clark Evans played a few series and looked a lot better than some have given credit for. It was nice to see such a tall guy back there. He did mostly handoffs but threw a few decent looking balls.

Simas had a really sick catch. Whoever it was was on him like white on rice but still managed to come up with it in the air.

The running game looked pretty good. We have so many great runners, I don't know what we'll do with them all. Scott had some good runs (and catches!) and Speedy had some good runs early on but didn't see much action after that. Sumler was in there a lot too along with Lockridge. Quentin Hildreth even saw some action, taking 2 or 3 handoffs from Evans and showing some good speed/elusiveness.

The defense overall looked better than I expected. Kasa is a BEAST. I saw him handling 2 O-linemen at once trying to break through and he was handling things pretty well. Bonsu is huge and definitely looks the part. I wasn't able to see him in action much but he'll be a big help. Herrod was tearing it up too.

Finally, the highlight of the day for me: Scott makes a catch and starts running toward a defender. Does he run out of bounds? Does he juke him? No. He jumps right the flip OVER him and almost clears it but his leg hit the guy's head and he went down. Then the ball got loose and someone (I think it was Mohler) almost runs it back for six. BUT... Tyler Hansen did not take kindly to that and DESTROYED the guy. I heard it from the opposite end of the field. It was savage.

That ended up being a lot more than I thought. I apologize for my lack of detail though. Oh well, I hope I was able to give some of you a small fix.

:yeahthat:
Running game is priority No. 1 in my book.

Agree, one reason Cody struggles to get the ball down field is because we have not had a consistent running game. Get that running game going, mix in some play action and the big plays will come!

Go Buffs!

Rep for the first report!

Go Buffs!

You're not taking it far enough. The reason cody has struggled is that the o-line has sucked. The running game has sucked cause the oline has sucked. The oline really should be opening up serious holes on our inexperienced d-line at this early stage scrimmage. I'll be woried if our oline isn't doing some manhandling.

Maybe we will be able to blame Grimes, inexperience and injury's for that. But your right we need to be blowing holes open. No excuses this year.

Thats what I am hoping anyway.

i was there for about 30 minutes. my non-scientific, no claims to any grand holistic comprehensive report:

i thought Hansen looked pretty good. running game looked OK IMO. not great. anyone wanting to see the road grater out of a 2-back set will be disappointed (if these plays are any indication. i'll also qualify this in that about half of what i saw was a 2 minute drill series). we still have 4 WR sets, one back set, and the WR's still catch the ball facing the QB. we still dink and dunk some. for sure.

however, we make a lot of nice plays with delay routes over the middle to TE/Geer and the flat to RB during the time i was there. Speedy had a big run....not sure we have a home run threat.

Just as I made my peace with Cody; now, i'm less sure. Hanson makes some plays with his feet and threw the ball as well as Cody (in what i saw).

saw the Scott attempted hurdle and fumble return mentioned above. Scott looks like he just needs something to push him over the top. he looks the part and can be shifty and puts his head down when he needs to.

two minute drill. moved the ball to at least midfield nearly every series, no TD's (maybe that was part of the plan). some FG's were hit were mos def "money"...a couple were less so. does hit the ball with some authority at times. made one that caromed off the goal post, in (i'm sure he called bank). a couple nice throws and near misses. some good adjustments by WR's once the ball was in the air to make a play (!). but, also some drops.

i came away pleased with the front 7, mostly. got penetration and collapsed the pocket more than once. though, it's hard to know with the first scrimmage and them having the playbook. DB's held didn't allow separation many times for what would be a coverage sack type situation (a couple of these, Hansen makes a play).

pretty solid turnout on the east side for a weekday at noon and no students.

the 2 minute drill sequence featured simulated crowd noise which i can't say, sitting on the north 25, was all that "fan friendly". it was pretty annoying and caused a few children near me to cry....which didn't make mom too happy either. i "get it", but it's the first scrimmage. it was kind of a bummer, from a fan perspective. i could have moved, sure.

i left when they started doing punt team (had to meet someone, was already late).

after 3 years i'd think something is better than the orange mesh pullovers on the helmets for special teams. they seem to always have problems with them coming off, or this or that.

Hawk looks pretty trim from a distance. Hat is still only working if you close your eyes and think Greg Norman early 90s.

they weren't keeping score on the scoreboard, so i don't know about that.

love to see the D in the road white jersesy/black pant in person. since, i don't make too many roadies and don't go to Invesco anymore.

One other thing I forgot to mention in my update was the resurgence of Riar Geer. He caught a couple of really nice balls and leveled Jeff Smart on one of them. I think he'll be a weapon this year.

Wait wait wait. Tyler Hansen leveled Shaun Mohler???!?! Wow. :wow: Good for him! Would've loved to see that intensity. Is it Sept yet??!

Guess its a no win situation for the Buffs. If the line blew holes open and we ran all over the field we would be worried about the dline. If the dline stuffed the run we would be worried about the oline. DAMMIT!

Bring on the Goats from Collins we need to see how good our football team is.

that was a real collision. right in front of me.

i'll also add that both QB's and Evans made some nice throws but also some real foul balls when a better than average BCS type throw moves the chains. overthrow or a grounder which gives the WR or RB no chance to make a play.

all this with the proviso they've been practicing for a week and not even going live all of that.

and, doubtlessly, when the other guys who saw the whole thing will post up reports that contradict everything i've said. :smile2:

Nevertheless, before the sun sets tonight, there will be people in here taking one side of that argument, or the other, and telling us that we're doomed! DOOOOOOOMED!:smile2:

You don't mean.................Syko-boom and BuffManiac are still loose???

Grab the chilluns and run fer the hills, Ma!

Looked pretty vanilla on offense to me. The offensive line has some work to do on pass protection. Cody looked okay, Hansen made some plays with his feet, but I thought he was looking to run a bit too often. Accuracy was decent, certainly not as good as what I saw on Tuesday. RBs, particularly Scott and Lockridge, looked good. The tight ends were pretty involved. None of the WRs really stood out to me. Hard to tell because the units were mixed together.

The defense looks pretty good right now. I think the DL is going to surprise a lot of people this year. We have some major size there finally. Goree is huge. Pretty impressed with the secondary as well.

Still not all that confident in Goodman. He made most of the kicks while I was there, but they were not exactly pretty. He did kick off as well the one time they did while I was there, so I have no idea where that leaves Jameson Davis. Grossnickle shanked the two punts I saw him attempt. Coverage teams look better though. Lockridge looks like he will get a shot returning kickoffs.

Finally, Mick is right-I understand why they did it, but the crowd noise over the loudspeakers got really annoying after about 15 minutes. Not fan friendly at all.

I don't have much to say about the practice... Let's just say, the bright spots were NOT where I hoped they would be... Darden and TD barely played :(... I think they looked pretty bad overall. Cept for Cody, he looked ready.

I would not read too much into today. For whatever reason, it looked very vanilla on both sides. Hardly any pre-snap motion on offense, I would be very surprised if that continues into the season.

Pretty much thought it was a waste of time, they obviously were not willing to show much of anything.

What I keep telling myself... Espi and #`12 as our starting WR's depresses me wayyy to much atm.

Hawk was obviously not 100% on board with the whole open practices thing. Fake crowd noise, moving 11 on 11s to the far field, staying very vanilla, hostile to the media after practice..

Hopefully all this paranoia leads to something.

What the F***? No 78Z right inside screen? No 42 cross rifle zone flood pass patterns? Why, I bet they ignored the triple Code Blue man/combo zone blitz with the safety and corners all coming, and the inside fake hand-off punt play where Grossnickle shovel passes to Iltis, too!

VERY Disappointing!

i agree. it was nice to be in the stadium and the cloud cover was benevolent. but, football-wise, it did seem like they wanted to get the public appearance out of the way and use the field to let special teams go "live" 11's and that's about it.

au contraire, they ran one a couple times. also, they had Miller lined up in the direct snap at TB (in a kind of Wild Hog look Arkie ran with McFadden) and they ran the fumblerooski with Cody lined up at tackle.

Ok, we get it. Hawkins can do no wrong.

it may not translate at the college level but when I played football the defense often dominated the early practices, I wouldnt read too much into today.

I just realy didn't like how many snaps 5'5' WR's got. Glad they work hard, but they couldn't catch the damn ball.
