IMO, Hambright is the closest thing to a lock to start on the entire team, outside of Viska and Montez.

Quite possibly on offense, but I like to believe that Mustafa and Landman are consensus locks on the other side of the ball.
 
It seems pretty obvious at this point that the hope from the staff for the O-line is to have Hambright start of Left Tackle, Pursell start at Center, Lynott start at Right Guard, and Sherman start at Right Tackle. The only position that really seems to be up for grabs (based off feedback from practices and other chatter) is the Left Guard spot where Tonz, Kutsch, Sauvao, and Moretti are all factoring in to varying degrees.
 
I think Hambright at LT and Sherman at RT are almost certainly the way it plays out. I think they get Fillip enough reps to come in and be the LT next year, but not necessarily burn his redshirt.

The interior on the line is much more undecided. I don’t know if Purcell has that center spot locked up just yet.

Well for now Pursell is running with "1s" at center. Who do you see challenging him for that spot?

Lynott would be the principal challenger in my opinion. It all depends on how much bigger and stronger Pursell has gotten, and how much the staff likes some of the other guards. Timmy isn’t the biggest guy in the world and center is probably a good position for him, although he seemed to struggle there when HCMM slid him over in the past.

I'm encouraged by the recent reporting on Sherman, and I think we all expect Hambright to lock up LT. If the coaches already clearly believe that Pursell/Lynott have separated from the pack enough to be the starters there, that's also probably good news. It's a lot better to be looking for one more guy to elevate to a starter than 2/3

I was hoping Sauvao would come in and close the door on the competition...but maybe that is unrealistic considering he just got here.

Yeah was wondering if you thought Lynott. Hopefully a new staff will give everyone a clean slate and rebuild the past O-line shortcomings. I wasn't impressed with Lynott at center as much as I had hoped; but that doesn't mean he isn't capable of doing better. Kutsch was also someone who came in with the versatility to play guard or center.

I'm actually very OK with the possibility of Sauvao taking a redshirt this season if Left Guard gets settled between one of Tonz, Moretti, and Kutsch. That way next season he can step in at RG taking over for Lynott as a junior with 2 seasons to go; thus allowing Roddick, Ray, and/or Johnson to be in position to take the reins when they are upperclassmen. Similar to Fillip doing the same this season at tackle now that we have Hambright.

I’m sure Tonz is a great guy and all but, and I can’t be alone on this, please please please someone besides Tonz at guard.

God, I hope Tonz doesnt have to see the field at all this year. He was just dreadful last year.

Last year is so last year.

I remember most everyone dreading Nembot doing anything his senior year other than being first off the bus. He put it together. There have been lots of similar examples. If Tonz plays this year I'm confident he'll have earned it.

Sure, but it'll also mean we have a glaring weak spot on the O-line.
 
Reading the articles this spring, I'm getting pissed off over stuff that's in the rearview mirror. Now that I know that Sherman and Fillip were listed 20-30 lbs heavier than their actual playing weight, I'll also assume it was true of others on the OL. Was Kaiser our only OT who legitimately weighed over 265 lbs? How is that possible in year 6 of a coach's tenure?

Think it has been well documented that Mac valued speed over size. Didn't think we could have big OL that could keep up with the DL/LB's in this conference.

The silly thing about that is that you can never have an OL that keeps up with the speed of the DLs and LBs at any level of football. The idea that it's a good idea to narrow that gap a bit by giving up your OL being bigger and stronger than the DLs and LBs is about the dumbest thing ever I've ever heard. It's one thing to say that you're going to emphasize quickness and fitness with your OLs in the 290-300 range instead of 310+ maulers. That scheme can work. But you never take it to the point where your OLs are lighter than the DLs they are facing.
