'15 TX QB Steven Montez (Signed to COLORADO)

Looks like Del Valle is off this week, so we won't have any Montez stats this week.

As stated before, if they do what they're supposed to it looks like they won't be challenged again until the state playoffs.

From what I can tell, and I could easily be wrong, but because of where El Paso is, they're a district or conference by itself. Del Valle would have to just beat the other 5A El Paso schools to move on, and then it looks like they're grouped with most of the Dallas/Arlington/Midland/Odessa schools in their region 1. So schools from those cities appear to be where we'd see him play against some different competition.

Correct. In the first playoff round they could be matched up against a team from a district right up against theirs, but in the next round could face one of the north Texas schools which are assumed to be playing tougher competition all year. To be honest since the addition of a 6A classification that entire 5A region 1 looks relatively weak.

Del Valle defeated Hanks HS 60-7.

Montez 9 of 20 for 122 yards and 128 yards rushing on 8 carries (5 total TD's)

His stats from their loss the week before were less than enthralling. I maintain you shouldn't take too much from HS stats, but discouraging nonetheless.

Was that the first playoff round or what? Our motto was PID, play in December, long season down there.

Luke,

San Angelo Central (8-1) is playing Odessa Permian this weekend. San Angelo appears to have turned things around the last couple of years. Big, big game. GO BOBCATS!

BTW, this is the last game of the regular season. Then the playoffs start.

Gotcha, hope they kick their ass. I hate Permian, they hated us too lol. I really haven't been paying attention much obviously. Hope Steven makes a good run.

Del Valle and Montez lost to Aledo in the Texas 5A playoffs today. Aledo's a powerhouse apparently.

Here's the highlights from Del Valle's playoff win last week against Amarillo Palo Duro, has a few Montez touchdowns:

I was confused. I thought the guy said "Midland Aledo." No such school. Sounds like De Valle and Aledo met at a neutral site in Midland. San Angelo Central (my HS) is playing Southlake Carroll in Bailer's stadium, which only I give a damned about. So I guess they are playing this round at neutral sites. I guess Texas divides 6A into two separate divisions so they have two State Champions. That's a bummer.

Aledo is the baddest of the bad ass Texas 4A teams. They walk into Austin and beat the **** out of teams like Cedar Park, Austin Westlake and Georgetown regularly. If Montez had a good showing against them, that's saying something.

Have watched tape on this young man, he is going to be a good one. We need to keep him.

They have a cool stadium in Mitland called Grande. They host a lot of playoff games there.

Crazy thing with going over 1,000 yards rushing with 14 TDs is that the coach made a concerted effort to keep a tight rein and avoid him risking injury by running a lot.

Montez is really good in the open field. Reminds me of Travis Wilson.

This is big. QBs who run a lot eventually take the kinds of hits that put them on the sidelines, you want a QB who can use his legs to allow recievers to come open and let them take the hits.

At the same time having a QB who is a threat to run, a threat to burn a defense running changes the entire way they play. Montez looks like he is developing into this kind of guy.

The perfect example is Russell Wilson in the NFL. He doesn't run very often, not like an RG3 or a Kappernick. He does run just often enough and so effectively that even though he isn't doing it that often defenses have to always be aware of it.
