What's the biggest "What if" in CU football history?

agree....i think another poster also back in the thread said same.

however, Mallory won a share of the Big 8 championship and took CU to the Orange Bowl. Mallory left for Illinois, who says James could get there or stay?

just devil's advocate.

the real disaster comes later with Fairbanks. who, seemed to fall on his sword at CU after taking the NFL Patriots to the playoffs when they weren't.

such a weird deal.
Your post makes it sound like Mallory was hired away, he was not, he was fired. Mallory sat out a year and then was hired by NORTHER Illinois not Illinois in the Big 10. Mallory was not a bad coach but was not a great recruiter. Fairbanks was hired because of two big boosters (Jack Vickers and Robert Six) got involved. But if we had not hired Fairbanks would we have hired McCartney?

What if the Lisa Simpson scandal never blew up into a national media firestorm? plus the Katie Hnida bonus comments from GB?
