Official Texas State Game Thread

The D is playing the way we expected the O to play but I still don't think we know how good our D is. They gave up some big plays I was super surprised to see in this game. I'm not convinced they will hold up very well against PAC-12 offenses. Hope they prove me wrong. The offense was a cluster @#$& - O-line and play calling were awful. QB play reminded me of a freshman with no game day experience - also unexpected.

Montez looks lost at times. If it's his first read (ala quick slant, see Oregon 2016) he looks great. If he has to step back and his 1st read is gone he gets antsy and starts running around and throwing bad passes. Needs serious work on touch passes, he throws rockets over guys heads.

This game might have been very good for the offense. If the offense didn't realize they have issues and they keep playing the same way, then they just aren't good. Let's hope they realized the issues there in the first few weeks.

Not sure his reads are that bad. The footwork, decision making under pressure, and missing easy throws are all legitimate criticisms, though.

I'm not going to get on him too hard for his attitude today, everyone not named Lindsay or Oliver seemed to have that problem in the first half.
Idk if you were talking to me about reads but I didnt say bad said slow. If you are slow with them, they'll become bad quickly.

In both games, and multiple times if I remember correctly, Montez has done this screwy scramble right, then turn 270 all the way back around to the left. Someone is going to watch tape and annihilate him on that, and he won't see it coming. I've never seen another qb do that.

I'm seeing that more than I have in a long time. Might not be a bad idea for CU to put it in its been working. I'm speaking of the shovel pass btw, screwed it up. Thank ya Nik.

Montez either takes way too long to find an open receiver or he just goes to the primary receiver no matter whether or not he's open. That catch by Bobo was on a pass that, by all rights, should never have been thrown. Texas State's D line controlled the line of scrimmage. Our running game was awful because they were stuffing the holes with their linebackers. I'm really disappointed and think getting to 7 wins is about the best case scenario.

That said, this is college football and teams can make dramatic changes during the course of a season. Here is hoping that happens.

BTW, on that long pass to, I think Field, on the opening drive of the second half, he was open by 15 yards just standing there with his hands up. It took FOR FRIGGING EVER for Montez to finally see him. That is unacceptable. Montez has got to recognize open receivers sooner.

I guess if I am going to be pissed, I would rather be pissed that the offense is mediocre while expected to be great and the defense is possibly quite good while expected to be average at best.

That being said, I am concerned about the gashers Texas St hit us with twice (one run and one pass) and let's be honest, the RMS is different with normal refs. Time will tell.

Aw chill guys...we won. One more game to see if the offense gets it together.

And I suspect CU will be wearing all whites next weekend.

Games like this are why I was happy with the weak non-con schedule this season. There were a lot of unknowns going in to the season, and there are a lot of growing pains to come. I think Montez will be fine, just needs to relax. Of course its hard when the o-line in front of you is playing like total ass, they're certainly the most concerning part of the team atm. Defense and special teams are encouraging. 3/3 on field goals and a 49 yard average on punts. I'll take it.

i certainly understand why some folks are pissed at a blowout win. there is the level of competition we played and the lack of intensity, especially in the first half, and montez and the o-line certainly have some work to do.

on the plus side, i think we might have the top db in the p12 in oliver. and, the d overall looks a lot better than folks thought they would, altho the competition hasn't exactly been fierce so far. and, we appear to have an actual kicker again and the special teams haven't shat the bed yet.

the intensity thing bugs me the most. we do not have the athletes yet to not bring our A game every weekend. this will become particularly obvious in conference play.

i know folks want to single out montez and he certainly needs to work on some things, but he is, far and away, the best qb we have had in many many years with far and away the most upside in many many years. and he spread the ball around well. he's going to get better.

the o-line is clearly not cohesive yet, but that's a big reason you want to start the season with patsies. they looked a bit better than last week and we still have another week to work on it. irwin is missed, but that shouldn't be an excuse-- they aren't playing fast and mean and together. lindsay is a freaking warrior and they just didn't do enough to get him through the first level, among their other flaws.

expectations are up in a big way. and, every team in conference is going to come ready this year-- our guys need to dial it up. it is too early to panic about the offense and far too early to declare the defense our strength. i think we're going to see some shootouts with this team this year in conference.

Some disturbing signs came from the local post game radio broadcast. There appears to be a growing rift between HCMM and Montez. During his post game, locker room radio interview, Montez said he and 'Mac', as he called him, had a heated exchange about him staying in the pocket. Steven's response to HCMM was apparently, "I don't know what that means!" Montez went on to say Tyler Lytle pulled him aside and told him to "act like me" in the pocket, with the inference being to remain there, calmly, to which Montez said, on air during the interview, "that actually made sense." When asked later on to respond to the account Montez provided, former head coach Barnett was nearly speechless, adding finally, "there's something there they gotta resolve."

Awesome.

yikes..

I'm loving DJ Eliot and the defense. Well planned game, great plays made across the board. Some mistakes, like the big pass on McCartney, Fo getting blown a few times, and some weird choices by the LB's and Buff backers tackling wise. But damn are our DB's good, our freshman in Callier is a beast, and Mulumba and Edwards both really just being dominat against a much lesser opponent. Offense obviously needs work, but they've got the peices..I thought defense was lacking peices but glad to be proven wrong so far.

I was worried something was happening at a behavior motivation level on offense...seems like that may be the case.

Leadership>>talent. That is difference between Montez and Sefo...but kids have to grow up and learn.

Montez and Mac will be fine. I didn't read the whole thread, but the PA Announcer today was awful. He pronounced Derek McCartney as Mcarty and I about lost it. Fireworks were a cool touch.

The offensive line looked like a Dan Hawkins offensive line. Just playing patty cake and letting guys blow by them. No fire. No recognition of who to block. They look lost.

I will say that the Oliver pick of what should have been a perfect moon pass/basket catch should be the Pac 12 Defensive Play of the Week. That was an absurd example of athleticism.

I think Montez has a little arrogance to him. Cockiness is one thing and something that's needed, but I see more arrogance than cockiness in him at times, and absolutely zero leadership. I know he's an underclassman and guys like Irwin and Lindsey are the leaders on O, but the QB needs to be the guy lighting the fire and Montez isn't that guy right now. Hopefully getting Irwin back does that.

Yeah, it was hard over the offseason to tell if it was confidence or cockiness. Thinking it's the latter..

Hopefully guys like Fields, Lindsay, Irwin can sit him down and tell him to chill.
