This stadium complex can either be incredible or it can be kinda neat. I get the sense that you're ok with kinda neat.

I do not think expanding those sections is the ideal way to improve the stadium. And that silly road is pretty important.

Depends on how it's built, I suppose. It would definitely overhang the street if we expanded those sections out to the same depth as the larger ones, though.
And that's ok. It's not like the street would have to be moved Or altered. There would just be a section of stands that would stick out over one small area of the street.

My thought would be to build the stands around the scoreboard like the Broncos did. That way, the point that's sticking out farthest toward the street doesn't go as high. I think this looks cool, too.

Colorado Avenue traffic would likely have to be rerouted to the north side of Farrand on Baker Drive past the current sackygate location.

Even then, not much room between the stadium and Duane Physics or Benson Earth Sciences

It wouldn't break my heart if Gamow Tower came down to improve sight lines inside the stadium. (Yes, I realize that's not going to happen, either)
 
Build a tunnel and make a grand entrance at the top of the tunnel level. You walk into the stadium looking at the new north end. That'd be cool.
 
Why is that street so important? I'd actually be ok closing Colorado Ave between Folsom and Euclid to vehicular traffic. You could create an awesome plaza feel that entire stretch by lining both sides with some big trees. Would be great for students, school fairs, and pep rallys and I'm sure you could work it so food trucks and other event vehicles could get in there when needed. It would still be wide enough for emergency vehicles too.

That's the kind of outside the box thinking that is needed around here. Great idea. Love it.

It is the only route through campus that is adequate size for buses and delivery vehicles. Just can't get to some of those buildings without Colorado Ave.

That's a great point and it may be the future. Got to assume that when the convention center and hotel happen it will mean that they'll expand Stadium Dr on the north side of the stadium and make that the main drag from Broadway to Folsom (connecting that area behind the Rec Center over to University Ave).

I'm pretty sure you can get to all of them without Colorado Blvd, you just might not get to pull up right to the front door. Buses can go down Regent. I'd rather not let delivery vehicle logistics dictate university master planning - that's why God invented golf carts and dollys.
 
Adding a small curve there or a short tunnel would also work if they absolutely, positively must have a street there - which they don't. They have delivery trucks and the like drive up on sidewalks on campus all the time. No big deal.
Or they don't have to change the street at all and simply extend the seating over the street with supports where the sidewalk is now. The street really isn't an impediment.
Thing is, I really love the idea of closing the street there and putting in a plaza.

I like the idea but my question would be, how many more seats are we talking about vs the cost.

I think the biggest bang for the buck is on the west side.

I agree on the bang for the buck comment. I'd expect that expanding the upper level on the South side to match the stands on the East side would add maybe 4-5k in seating. And those would be cheap seats, too. But as Nik points out, adding cheap seats isn't necessarily a bad thing. Get folks in the stadium, or sell those to recent grads at a reduced price.

Our architect friends can weigh in here but the 10 million tab I put on it is rather conservative, I would think.

And it's assumed in my math, the new upper deck would sell out all 5k seats for 10 years.

Tough task.

If you closed colorado from Folsom to where it turns into 18th, you can still get delivery trucks into where they need to be. However, There is no effective or efficient bus route through campus. I know lots of students from my time there that counted on the buff bus to get from the Engineering School to the west side of campus for their humanities courses during their passing period (10min). Without that route for the bus you make it extremely difficult, if not impossible for some students to get to their classes on time.

"Rather Conservative" is putting it.... well its not even on the same planet.
 
It's not an either/or thing. Why not do both?
Well, I would think that the west/northwest expansion would be expensive enough, and if done correctly, would add the seating capacity (60-65,000) that provides the AD room to add the appropriate mix of premium and inexpensive family seating. And it doesn't really require a plan for CB.

Personally, I love the view of Folsom from CB. I would kinda hate to lose that.

I lived in Crosman in the Engineering quad - I never once took a bus across campus. Get a bike ffs.

God , no. That road is vital for students getting to campus
