To underscore this point, the NCAA attempted to apply that general aspiration to the Penn State case and apply penalties. The NCAA got curb stomped when legally challenged because it exceeded their mandate and by-laws.
I took it directly from their website and they state very explicitly that they govern over “health and safety and matters impacting women”. You falsely stated that they’re only concerned with fair competition, which is patently false, evidenced by their own governance statement. If you want to continue down this path fine, but you are absolutely incorrect.
In terms of ENFORCEMENT of violations (i.e, punishment), they are only limited to competitive advantage. You keep wishing for enforcement capabilities which do not exist.
What you posted is overly broad and would never hold up if the NCAA just decided to punish Michigan State to "make a stand." That is not me being flippant or anything, but you seem to want to personally attack me as if I am defending the behavior at Michigan State.
Tell us why they got curb stomped (great term, Duff) in the PSU case?? Because they overreached. Now you want them to do it again. For which they will get curb stomped and sued.
Why did they punish Penn St ? Did having a pedophile in their locker room give them a competitive advantage?
They rescinded those sanctions.

You do see the flaw in your logic, right? You keep stating that the NCAA is only interested in conduct related to competitive balance, but the evidence in their mission statement, governing statement, and prior actions all dispute that claim. It seems to me that you are conflating the NCAA being ineffective at punishing certain violations with not having the ability to do so.
But either way, we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one because it's gameday and I'm ready to drink some kool aid! Go Buffs!
No. The one time the NCAA decided to step outside its narrow purview, it folded rather quickly. Why do you think that is, given the heinous nature of the Sandusky case?
You are conflating aspirational goals with actual bylaws (the teeth) to actually punish schools. The NCAA may be interested in situations outside competitive advantage, but they lack the authority to do anything. It is not about effectiveness, but rather what they can actually do. Show me a a clear, distinct bylaw (not just vague goals on the website) that gives the NCAA authority to punish schools for legal matters and you will win this argument hands down.

The article didn't go there, but I can't help but note this coincides with the start of the playoffs. I'd really like to see a rigorous statistical analysis that controls for this, but it's reasonable to question if fans perceive that the playoffs either:
a: made the regular season less important and therefore less interesting
b: created a situation where their favorite team was deemed highly unlikely to compete the playoffs in a given season
c: made conference championships less relevant, which leads to "well, my team lost a single game -- no chance of playoffs now -- season's over"
large scale perception of any of those would intuitively lead to a decline in attendance.
Read deeper than the governance statement. Read the actual bylaws for the details. At least be intellectually honest.

We will just have to disagree. The problems are there and need to be addressed, we just disagree on the agencies that should be used to fight the problems.
This is my decree.
The NCAA shall conduct investigations into these violations (rape, assault, cheating, etc). IF they find the case is supported, the team (or athletic department if found to be department-wide) will be prohibited from participating in championship games or tournaments (and have the ones already achieved stripped) until the affected coach is terminated or quits. The coach's/AD's salary will suspended for the remainder of his/her tenure.
- No scholarship reductions
- No mandatory firings
- No games forfeited
- Unpenalized transfer for students
Basically it would be the NCAA saying "we don't like what you're doing and we don't think kids should go to your school until you do something about it. But we're not going to punish the athletes. If they want to keep playing for a ****ty coach/AD/institution, that's their prerogative, but they scholarship won't be taken away, they can still play and vie for professional opportunities."

Massive law suit. Bylaws would have to be rewritten, essentially reframing purpose of NCAA. All tickets go up $10 to pay for funding.

8 conference games, 14-team conference and a paired rival in the other division really is a bad setup for playing those 6 other teams in the opposite division. Nice advantage for Alabama recently that they're playing Tennessee every year while Auburn's playing Georgia every year & LSU's playing Florida every year.
The paired thing was really stupid.
Rumors only, but fisticuffs in the post-game locker room is what I'm hearing.
