How many times does this need to be repeated for people to understand the significance?
don't repeat. maybe present a distribution graph, calculate mean, median, standard deviation and probabilities of (a) loss (b) gain < 5 yards (c) gain > 5 yards (d) gain > 10 yards for any given run attempt.

in seriousness, few complex subjects (and I believe football is one) can be explained with a single number such as the mean value.

I agree with the running up the middle mindset, and I am trying to figure out where the hell that came from in the last 3-4 games? When we do not have a lead blocker, or a jumbo package, why the heck do we run it up the middle? Freshman Center, not the best OL overall yet, and our WR's are probably some of the best blockers? When we ran stretch, or other types of edge plays, Travon can pick a hole and push for a decent gain. Standard personnel, with a single back (especially one with no real body lean or power) trying to dive forward for a yard when 9-10 guys are pushing that area makes no sense. Would it be nice to have the OL buck up and get that yard, yes, but it has not and will not happen right now.
Running up the middle seems so....oh I don't know.........Bill Parcells like, MM's favorite coach of all time.
MM got drunk on the running game the last 7 mins of the ASU game. It spilled over into the game plan for the next three games. That was not a good move. Please replace Adams soon.

So, Mr. Playcaller: what is your recommendation when the OL routinely gives up sacks against light boxes and the QB only sees double teams across the board in the secondary?
Here what I’d do. H- back stays in to block. Trips run combo routes to prevent over the top coverage. Motion to help Montez wil pre-snap reads. Three step drops. Spray routes like Rams.

We averaged 6 yards a carry. If you want to cherry pick and take out Travon's 75 yard run, we still averaged over 4 yards a carry. You act like we ran 50 times for negative yardage.
How many runs for 2, 1, 0 or neg yards?

Agree. There are plenty of efficiency stats out there for teams with splits for O and D.

S/P+ is my favorite. It’s like OPS in baseball if you believe in sabermetrics.

You tell me. A 1 or 2 yard run would've gotten the first.

We needed 1 yard.

Game in 60 is up:
https://pac-12.com/videos/2018-football-60-game-week-oregon-state-colorado

We needed closer to 2 than 1.

No motion to help Montez read.

Jmac with a 10 yd + cushion in the slot. RPO to the left. If the contain guy drops, toss / hand to McMillan outside. 1st down. if the contain guy crashes, Jmac takes the slant. 1st down.

Results. Up the middle. 1 yd. Downs.

And when they ****ed all that up, you would've been here whining about that too. Again, they didn't execute well enough to run a simple dive play and pick up a yard plus, but you want them to run an RPO on 4th and 1?

Gonna be tough because they’re jamming our guys at the LOS into the middle of the field. Motion is not super relevant since Montez doesn’t do pre-snap reads. It’s zone anyway, so you don’t gain much since there’s no defensive movement.

Having a fullback who can block probably would help. That isn’t a huge feature of this offense, though.

We’ve been trying the quick stuff. Pass rush is getting through and doubles across the board make the appropriate YAC tough. This is why the OL being incompetent at blocking is really a nightmare. You can’t adjust for them because they’ve been getting rag dolled with regularity.

Yes, I'd like them to run a play that involved the skill players - Montez, McMillan and Jmac to account for the deficiencies - the entire OL - by running AWAY from the front and giving them GASP more than 1 option for when the OL **** all over themselves, again.

Go watch the replay, and tell me that going to the left, where Jmac had 10 yds to gain 2 wasn't a better option.

It's not like we don't run that play. We know how. Wonder who chose not to?

You can blame the coaches for a terrible job recruiting/developing the OL, as well as an awful defensive coverage/alignment scheme playing 8 yards off most of the 2nd half, but at what point are players held accountable for their ****ty play on the field?

And when Montez is sacked on 4th and 1, what would you say?

You forgot only rushing 4 on 3rd and 9+

I thought we were critical of Frosty for throwing the players under the bus, it always had to be the coaches. Now it's ok to throw the players under the bus?

There were individual errors made. This is true in every game.
There were probably effort issues once we had the big lead - I'm willing to admit that.

But you are completely blind if you don't think we turtled and started running clock thinking we had that game won. Prevent D. Beyond conservative O. Soft. Pathetic.

They had 1 sack the entire game. Are you seriously telling me we ran the ball there cause we were afraid to get sacked?

They did, however have 5 TFL (6 counting the sack) - so by your logic, we should have been passing anyway.

I’ve told you this several times. But I’ll say it again for the last time in hopes you’ll understand. We ran the ball because we needed one yard against the worst run defense in the league. Plays work, players don’t.

Coach, when you look back, what could YOU have done differently to stem the momentum?

Well, we practiced, some things, the players, the other coaches . . . . IT WASN'T ME I DIDN'T **** UP

He should run for office. Great job of completely avoiding the question.
I dont think I've actually listened to a Mac press conference in like 4 years.

Always worthless

There's two things I'd like to see us try on short yardage - QB under center sneak, and power run with either a full back or H-back. Not sure where that's gone.

Under center snaps are not reliable. As we saw...

Probably the wrong thread for this, but the more I have stewed and pondered this week the thing that jumps out to me is the OL mismanagement. Someone, can’t recall who to give them credit, posted after the game commenting on the rotating lineups each game with guys changing positions or swapping in bench players. I was also thinking about the poor technique and communication we see week to week (ie getting confused on simple stunts and having two guys blocking one while a second defender runs by them). That is 100% coaching in both realms. We can bemoan our OL recruiting, but fact of the matter is that our recruiting is sufficient to be competitive in the PAC-12. I don’t see us getting crushed, more if sloppy play and missed assignments.

Need an OL coach upgrade in a big way. HCMM owns the fact that OL play continues to be subpar all through is tenure.

Outside of Sherman, Moretti, Ray, and Fillip, I don’t think our OL recruiting is nearly good enough. One day, when all 4 of those guys are fully healthy and ready to go, we may have a nice OL.
