2018: Recruiting News, Notes & Official Visitors

I don't want to overload on specialists, but what do you guys think of recruiting a punter this cycle? Kinney is a junior, so if we got a punter this year, the new guy would be starting as a sophomore, as opposed to having to roll out a freshman after Kinney graduates. Of course, we could just hope that a walk-on makes the grade, but that does leave something to chance. Thoughts?
Or we grab a juco next year. To be honest, I really don't like having more than 3 specialists on scholarship. I expect to be at 3 next year with Bale getting one after multiple years as our starting LS.

I forgot about the damn LS.

I'm not saying that specialists need a redshirt year, but personally I feel more comfortable with it. I guess Mac and crew disagree and feel fine with it, because I haven't seen any news about recruiting specialists. However, I imagine we'll likely get a middle of the road HS kicking prospect, and it just seems like a lot of pressure on a kid straight from HS. While I think we would have lost ultimately, that Michigan game really made me appreciate punters more. I think it'd help a year to get a specialist to take his training, technique, and focus to where it needs to be, assuming we're not getting JK Scotts of the world. Is that year worth a scholarship spot for other positions...I'm torn on it, hence the question.

I hope so too, but our kicking struggles have really made me rethink this. I guess it's apparent where you stand on my question. I used to be more extreme, as I thought we could get a walk-on or guy buried on the depth chart to learn long snapping, find a walk-on to punt and earn a scholarship if good enough, and then have one kicker on scholarship. I didn't think there was enough value on spending more than two of 85 scholarships on a specialist. I still think long snapping can be a learned skill by guys buried on the depth chart, but I can understand using three scholarships between the FG and punter. I'm not a huge advocate either way though.

Sleeper DT to keep an eye on is Saguaro HS's Michael Maafu. Same school as Jared Poplawski. This kid is quick as a cat.

Holy mother of Zeus! The number of unofficial visitors for this weekend is insane (likely over 30)!

This is not quite SEC level recruiting (I mean, I've heard of games at Tennessee and Bama where they have 100 kids on the sideline), but it's the biggest I can remember. Wow.

Based on some Twitter stalking, it looks like CU is looking for more immediate reinforcements on the DL. Coach Chev started following Texas transfer Chris Daniels and Coach Adams started following Caleb Tremblay's teammate Adam Lopez. Probably linked with the Umu news

I'd assume he's not listed on the UT roster this year he is attending classes at a JUCO and would be eligible next season. If that's the case, this would be a major pickup for the Buffs.

Here's his twitter: https://twitter.com/ChrisDaniels_99

2018 kicker Dylan Williams from Half Moon Bay HS, Half Moon Bay CA just visited/ is visiting.

Looks like Mr. Williams is still interested in the Buffs, and sounds like he had another good visit.

(Found an article on him from last week. Must be very athletic- assume not too many kicking/ punting prospects have, in the same game, a 49 yard field goal, long (75 yard) kickoff return and long (31 yard) run (http://www.smdailyjournal.com/sport...cle_84a4ff16-b86f-11e7-aea7-17cb1443e7fe.html).)

Good to see that we're recruiting a kicker. Stefanou's 13/15 (missed his 1st kick when injured in game 1 & missed a 50+ yarder against UA). Otherwise, he's been perfect on kicks and XPs. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he talks to an agent about an NFL shot after one season.

We finally get a kicker worth his salt and you think he's gonna leave after 1 year?? damnit Nik, don't do this to me.

i like the aussie but does he have nfl range?....just asking im not sure

He is what the pros want. They would like 60 yard range but demand a guy who can hit the 35 yarder virtually every time when it matters.

My question on him is kick-offs. Unless your punter can do it the NFL isn't interested in carrying somebody on a roster just to kick off.
