Hawkins opted not to honor Sumler's scholarship for the spring semester and Sumler has appealed that decision. Athletic director Mike Bohn said he was scheduled to meet with Sumler about the issue last week.
I know this was in the Scott thread but I thought this action by our head coach deserved its own topic so more people see it. To me, this is a very petty thing to do for a kid that played hard for the program and by all accounts was a team player.
Two things really bother me about this:
1, this guy is graduating early and from what Hawkins and his bosses have been talking about, this is what our program is all about now. Not winning, but having good kids that graduate. And now they are pulling the rug out from under him for this spring semester even though he played ball last fall.
2, (and probably more importantly if we are unlucky enough to have Hawkins lead us through another recruiting cycle) this is going to create a huge recruiting problem when other coaches point out that Hawkins has pulled a scholarship.
I know what the reasoning was, but it is kind of an unwritten rule that you don't retract a scholarship, especially from a kid that is going to graduate in the spring.
