Olympic Sports- Transfers (incoming and outgoing) and other roster news

Hadn't looked at it in a long time, but just noticed that the CU tennis roster has been updated for the 2018/19 season, and is showing a new transfer in, Monica Malinen (https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=11886). She hails from Oulu, Finland and, most recently, Western Kentucky University. She will be a junior next season for the Buffs.

Welcome and congrats to her!

Western Kentucky's 2018 individual tennis stats - https://wkusports.com/documents/2018/1/28/Season_Statistics_2017_18.pdf
(Looks like she mainly played at #4 singles and #1 doubles for WKU.)
Every time I checked a tennis update, it seemed our squad was struggling in doubles. This could potentially help a lot.

I guess often expected to occur with a coaching change- looks like another Buff tennis player, sophomore (last season) Aussie Chloe Hule, is no longer on the roster. Per the stats (https://static.cubuffs.com/custompages/wtennis/2017-18/teamcume.htm), She played #2 singles for the Buffs in (EDIT) 16 of their 19 matches last year so, assuming her absence isn't just a website omission, that means the Buffs have lost both their #1 and 2 singles players (both underclassmen in 2017/18) from last season .

Best wishes to Ms. Hule wherever she is going.

Note- Including the 2 known incoming freshmen, the tennis roster is down to 6 players for next season, so I assume we should expect at least 2 more players to arrive, either transfers and/ or freshmen. Guess they may look at least partly to go the transfer route, as the class distribution looks a little off right now, with 3 seniors, only one junior (the new transfer noted in post #120), no sophomores and 2 freshmen. (Although I guess a new coach will take a long view and may not (???) care that much about class distribution in her 1st year or two.)

Not confirmed officially by CU or any other (solid) 2nd source yet but, per the below instagram posted by the student-athlete, looks like men's track and field is picking up a SOLID multi-event (decathlon, etc.) athlete in Wyatt Rhoads, who will be joining the Buffs from Iowa State. He shows as a junior in his ISU roster page linked to below, but I can't see any marks for him this outdoor season, so assume (also indicated by the below Instagram) he took a red-shirt, so will probably still be a junior for outdoor track-purposes for the Buffs next season.

Welcome and congrats to him!

ISU roster page - http://cyclones.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=9357

College Performance records for him (Can select different tabs for Outdoor and Indoor seasons) : https://www.tfrrs.org/athletes/5585176/Iowa_State/Wyatt_Rhoads.html
(Outdoors - His decathlon career best looks to be 6,638 points during his sophomore (2017) season (at the Big 12 Championships), which would have been the 2nd highest score for the Buffs this past season.
Indoor - Looks like he DID compete in indoor track in 2018, so I'd guess (???) he'll be a senior next season in that season (if he doesn't red-shirt in 2019). He scored a career best 4,995 points at the Big 12 Championships this past season, which would have made him the 2nd highest scorer on the Buffs (like with the decathlon, behind only now graduated Andrew Ghizzone).)

As I'd mentioned in the Women's golf thread (https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/wo...y-spring-2019-season-news-and-results.133721/), I'd THOUGHT I'd heard while half listening to a Pac 12 Network Buff program that they may have picked up a grad transfer. Per the below, they have, and it's Haley Nist, who spent her 1st 4 years at Oregon State, and hails from Meridian Idaho.

Welcome and congrats to her!

Her OSU roster page from last season with more info - https://osubeavers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6689
(Looks like she lost the 2nd (main) half of the 2016/17 season to injury, which is why she still has a season's eligibility left to compete with the Buffs. OSU didn't pick her to be one of the five competing in last season's Pac Championships (where they finished 11th out of 11), but per the roster, she "Finished her four-year Oregon State career with a scoring average of 75.15, the third best in Oregon State history")

One thing I hadn't noticed until attending today's Buff soccer scrimmage- they received another transfer this season, namely defender Gabbi Chapa, who spent her freshman year at the Univ. of Illinois, so will be a sophomore with the Buffs.

Welcome and congrats to her!

Her Buff bio - https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=12006

Her Illinois bio - https://fightingillini.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7440
(From their stats page, she earned more playing time than any other freshman on the team (823 minutes over 13 matches, 8 as a starter), even though her game by game stats show her out for 4 weeks in the middle of the season.)

Can't see they ever did an announcement but just noticed, while looking at the leader board of the current tournament the men's golf team is at, there was an unfamiliar name, Andre Leveque (https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=12033, not much detail in his bio yet.) listed. Looking at an article before the 1st tournament started (https://cubuffs.com/news/2018/9/6/mens-golf-golfers-open-fall-season-friday-at-air-force.aspx), it mentions he's a transfer from South Florida, and is listed as a junior on the roster.

Welcome and congrats to him on becoming a Buff!

Was just doing my occasional look at the Olympic sports rosters, and noted that Buffs' tennis appears to have lost another player (3rd transfer since last season), as senior Ilana Oleynik (who played mostly at #6 singles and on the #2 or #3 Buff doubles teams last year) is no longer on the roster. From doing a Google search, I found an Instagram post she made that she has signed to go to grad school (and play her senior year of tennis) starting next fall at the Univ. of Idaho. Best wishes to her going forward!

Interesting situation now for Buff tennis and their new head coach. Assume Coach Steinberg has some plans (transfer? diamond in the rough student-athlete already at CU or freshman arriving in January?), but as of now this puts tennis (like every sport having a decent chance of having injured players every season) at the bare minimum # of 6 players on the roster. (For those who don't follow college tennis, every team competition consists of 3 doubles matches (team that wins 2 doubles matches or more gets the one double point) and 6 singles matches.)

In general, would say this team will be one Buff fans will have to be patient with (maybe for a few years?), since I assume it might take awhile before they are competitive, at least from a (VERY TOUGH) Pac 12 perspective. (Going quickly through their past schedules, they've never won more than 2 team competitions in conference (there are 10 Pac teams that compete in women's tennis) since joining back in 2011.)

I haven't been able to identify who yet, but looks like volleyball has picked up another player for next (2019) season!

Leah Clayton is coming to play volleyball at CU. Sorry to all of you Anna Kendrick fans.
http://www.richkern.com/vb/recruits/Indexsub.asp?Div=DI&VBYear=2019
From a quick google search, Leah Clayton just completed her junior season at ETSU.
She is a 5'11" outside hitter from Danville, VA. She started out at Liberty University.

I thought CU had used all of their scholarships. When I checked the roster, Anyse Smith is longer listed. Huge loss if she has decided to transfer. Does anyone have any info on the current roster for the upcoming season?

Last I knew VB players get one free transfer. This would be her second transfer. So unless the rules have changed in the last few years or she gets an NCAA exemption, she would have to sit out a year here.

I moved the last 4 posts above to this thread (from the recruiting one) since the Ms. Clayton (and possibly Ms. Smith) news is transfer-related.

1st, welcome and congrats to Leah Clayton! (Thanks to richkern, com for, as he often does, solving the mystery of who Coach Mahoney's tweets are about.)

Ms. Clayton looks to be a VERY nice pickup. A few things about her:

  • Per ETSU's stats (http://cdn.streamlinetechnologies.c...-4158-9671-583C93B4E484/ETSUcombined11.30.pdf), Ms. Clayton is definitely a 6 rotation player, having averaged 2.75 digs per set this past season. Of course, outside hitters usually "get the glory" off their offensive numbers, and she was (as would be anticipated) strong in that category, averaging 4.2 kills per set while hitting a very respectable .233.
  • Edit- wanted to add that, per a colorado.edu people search, she's already on the school directory, which hopefully means (for both academic and athletic) reasons she'll get to spend spring in school and with the team. (there's a Leah Anderson Clayton in the CU directory, and per https://new.berecruited.com/athletes/1627873 , that looks to be her full name.)
It will be interesting to see if she is able to play next season or not. IF it's what the team and she wants, hopefully it follows the course of the (Buff great) Taylor Simpson transfer from a few years ago. (She was able to play to play immediately, even after having played at Nebraska and Missouri.) If not, assume it might not be the worst situation for Ms. Clayton, as I'd think a couple transfers could equal losing at least a few academic units (at least that was the case back when I was in school (and rode my dinosaur to class)). Especially in the case of inter-conference transfers like this, I always get the feeling it's up to the departing school and whether they grant a (certain kind of?) release or not.
(My (admittedly VERY limited) perspective is It almost doesn't seem to matter much whether it's a 1st transfer or not. I know in the track and field "world", there was a lot of conversation last month about a young and talented jumper/ hurdler taking to Twitter after not being granted a release by Georgia to immediately compete at another school (Texas) (https://www.flotrack.org/articles/6280300-tara-davis-says-georgia-not-releasing-her-to-transfer). Also remember a few years ago MANY corn fans on Volleytalk were pissed when they received a transfer of an All-American volleyball player, but she was one of if not the only transfers that year to not receive a release to compete the next season from her old school (LSU), so red-shirted a season.)
______________________________________________________________________________

Re Anyse Smith, definitely a bummer, as a CU fan, if she's no longer on the team.

With her hops and power, she somehow looks different than just about any player I watched last season, even within the elite and talent-stacked Pac 12. If she is moving on, wish her only the best.

(Holding out a VERY LITTLE hope she may end up staying- she was also off the roster for awhile after her true freshman (2017) season (EDIT- see my posts #116 and 117 in this thread), but then popped up again a little later in the year. BUT, that may be the only time I remember seeing that happen since following the Olympic sports more closely, so I'd assume the odds that "lightning strikes twice in the same place" would be rather small. (This is one of those cases I end up HOPING is a case of website error (please be!), but so far I can't remember the (competent) cubuffs.com website folks making that mistake.))

My understanding of the transfer is the following:
1.The requirement for the release from the departing school is so that the player can get the first transfer without having to sit out the year.
2.If a player is looking to transfer more than once, the only way they can do that second transfer without sitting out a year is to get an exemption (probably not the official term for it) from the NCAA. That is what was done in the Taylor Simpson case. Coach Kritza filed for the exemption with the NCAA and it was granted.

Thanks for the clarification. (Looked quick via Google search and didn't find anything- wonder what the history is of the 2nd transfer immediate eligibility exemptions being granted- seldom? often?)

Note- Just looked into it a little bit, and looks like ETSU's (long time (16 year)) head coach just left for Alabama (https://rolltide.com/news/2018/12/1...dsey-devine-as-new-head-volleyball-coach.aspx). Don't know if that helps with an immediate eligibility argument in this kind of case or not?

CU has her listed at 5'9". that worries me a little. Do not like outside hitters smaller than 6'0".

Official welcome and congrats to Leah Clayton!

Also, just noticed the soccer team now has an early 2019 roster out on cubuffs.com (https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?roster=510&path=wsoc). It's obviously not complete, as none of the incoming freshmen are listed yet. However, it does look like the Buffs may (???) be losing at least one returning player, as forward Marty Puketapu is not listed. She would be a junior next season if she returns or transfers.

Assuming the roster is accurate, best wishes to her where ever her path(s) leads.

I can verify that Marty Puketapu has returned to New Zealand - apparently to be closer to her family.

Also have heard there is a transfer on campus.

Thanks to Volleytalk (VT) user rtael (although no thanks for the news itself) for noting in VT's 2019 transfer thread (http://volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/75795/d1-transfers-2019?page=48) that (this past season) junior opposite Lauren Dorrell is not appearing on the 2019 Buff volleyball roster (https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?path=wvball&roster=511&sort=class) anymore. (As usual with potential outgoing transfers and other roster deductions, I'm hoping for website error.)

Assuming she is no longer on the team (and of course even if she is still is), wish Ms. Dorrell only the best.
(She seemed to show a lot of fight and heart last year, as she played a "good" part (at least the 1st half or so?) of the season with a LARGE wrap or brace (I can't remember which) going up one of her thighs***, and then I remember noticing her also having to wear a serious-looking knee brace at some point of the season as well.
***As I noted in the https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/ma...ting-23-utah-wed-7-00-14-usc-sun-1-00.134788/ thread, one of the Pac 12 announcers said during that match she was playing/ dealing with a torn hip labrum.)

If Dorrell is gone then it is imperative the freshman play extremely well next year. No hitters expect for Spann left and a very undersized and depleted roster at this point.

I also just noted this in the current off-season soccer news thread (https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/20...-news-awards-spring-schedule-released.135894/), but since she's a transfer also wanted to note here that soccer has a new player on the roster for 2019, Hannah Sharts, a tall (5'11") defender/ midfielder who has spent her 1st 2 seasons at UCLA. She showed as a redshirt freshman on UCLA's 2018 roster (https://uclabruins.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8172), so assume she'll be a sophomore next season for the Buffs. (Hopefully she won't need to sit out a season as can sometimes happen with an intra-conference transfer.)

Welcome and congrats to her!

From the article that included the news of her transfer (https://cubuffs.com/news/2019/2/22/soccer-buffs-start-official-spring-training.aspx)-

Sanchez adds Two for the Fall
The Buffs have added two more players to its incoming class for 2019. UCLA transfer Hannah Sharts is already on campus and training with the Buffs. Megan Short will join the rest of the incoming freshman in the fall.

Sharts, a defender/midfielder from Newbury Park, Calif., played in six matches last season at UCLA. She earned four varsity letters at Westlake High School and led her team to three league titles. Sharts was a three-time All-CIF selection and was the Marmonte League MVP in 2016 and 2017.

"We are excited that Hannah has transferred in this semester," Sanchez said. "She is a player that we recruited out of high school and we feel she still has a ton of upside. Hannah is versatile and can play in the back or midfield. She is great in the air, strong in the tackle and is composed on the ball."

Per the below (and per the richkern.com website a couple weeks ago), Buff volleyball looks to have picked up a new player for next (2019) season in 6'2" middle blocker Meegan Hart, who will be coming over from Iowa State. Prior to college, she attended Rosary HS in St. Charles, Illinois, and played club ball at Club Fusion. I assume she'll be a redshirt sophomore*** next season as a Buff. (***That's what Iowa State has / had her classified as in their preliminary 2019 roster. She was a sophomore last season but, per the roster page linked to below, suffered a broken finger early in the season.)

Welcome and congrats to her!

Her Iowa State roster page - https://cyclones.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=10393
(Per that, among other things, she was the #85th ranked prep recruit nationally in Prepvolleyball.com's rankings for her high school graduating year (2017). She was a starter for all 3 matches she played in last season before her season-ending injury. She's also been "Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll" all 3 semesters she's completed in Ames.)

As I had mentioned in my last post, Meegan Hart had announced through Instagram post that she was transferring to become a Buff. It is now official.

OFFICIAL congrats and welcome to her!

Direct link to article (Note that Coach Mahoney says she could also compete for a/ the right-side hitter position in addition to middle blocker, which is all they officially list her as.) - https://cubuffs.com/news/2019/5/14/volleyball-colorado-adds-transfer-meegan-hart.aspx

By: Shaun Wicen, Assistant SID
Release: May 14, 2019

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's volleyball team added Iowa State transfer Meegan Hart, head coach Jesse Mahoney announced Tuesday morning.

"We are very excited to add Meegan to an already deep and talented 2019 class," said Mahoney. "Meegan's experience having already competed at a high level in the Big 12 will translate nicely into our program here at Colorado. She is a long and dynamic athlete with a very fast arm – and has the versatility to play in the middle or on the right-side depending on our needs. Meegan has the tools to contribute on the court from day one this fall."

Hart, a 6-2 middle, is a redshirt sophomore that has been on the Cyclones roster for the past two seasons. She missed most of her freshman season from injury and redshirted her sophomore season after another injury. She has played in 14 sets for Iowa State, earning 15 kills in 2018 with a .265 hitting percentage and 11 blocks (1.38 per set) before missing the rest of the season.

Highlights (Looks to be older from her club days.) -

(Thanks to a letsrun.com forum thread for the info/ link,)- looks like women's track and field and cross country possibly has picked up a nice addition, as distance runner Emily Venters has posted on Instagram that she is transferring to the Buffs from Boise State.

With 3 different seasons (cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field), it's often hard for me to be sure what year she will be competing as a Buff, but from what i can see, I'd guess she'll be a junior next season in cross country (with a redshirt year possible), while she'll be a sophomore for both indoor and outdoor track next year (with redshirt years already taken in both).

Her college highlight to date as an athlete, as also mentioned below, is probably earning All-American status this past cross country season by finishing 39th at the NCAA Championships.

Prior to college, looks like she is from Lawrence KS, where she attended and ran for Lawrence Free State High School.

Welcome and congrats to her!

Her results
(Believe athletic.net requires a (free) subscription to view all results) -
College Cross country
- https://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/Athlete.aspx?AID=12428527
(Looks like she had a big-time finish in this past season's NCAA Cross Country Championships, where she earned her 1st All-American honors by finishing in 39th place for the Broncos (top 40 finishers are honored as All-Americans). She also finished 6th at her conference championships in a sport where the MWC is VERY competitive.)

College Track - https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=12428527
(It looks like she redshirted outdoors this season after redshirting the 2018 indoor season, so should have 3 years of eligibility in both of those seasons. Highlights seem to include earning points for her team indoors this past season at the MWC meet with a 5th place finish in the 5000M. Outdoors, in the 2018 season, looks like she JUST missed qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 5000M, as she finished in 15th at the West Prelims (top 12 advance). She then finished 2nd at the same distance at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships in June of 2018.)

High School cross country - https://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/Athlete.aspx?AID=5955715
(In 4 years competing for her HS, she finished 1st, 1st, 3rd and 2nd in Kansas's largest school division (6A) state championships. After her senior year, she also finished 2nd at her (Heartland) NXN regional to qualify for the prestigious NXN (Nike) Cross Nationals, where she finished 32nd.

High school track - https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=5955715
(She won 3 KS state championships (6A division) during her time in HS, including 2 as a senior (in the 1600M and 3200M), as well as 4 second and 1 3rd places finishes between those 2 distances. After her senior year, she also competed in the prestigious Brooks PR Invitational, where she finished 7th in the 2 mile against most if not all of the other top runners in the country.)

Wanted to mention one of my sources (edit- actually probably THE source) for fun college distance running content has also now noted Ms. Venters' transfer.

Looks like more transfer action occurring within the women's track and field/ cross country teams for next season:
  • On the outgoing side, middle distance runner Elissa Mann posted an Instagram earlier today that she is going to be using her final year of outdoor track eligibility at the Univ. of San Francisco (as a grad student tranfer).
She was a redshirt junior with the Buffs for outdoor track this season, and graduated from CU this earlier this month. She saved some of her best for last as a Buff, winning the Pac 12 Championships 800M championship earlier this month (after also earning points with 5th place finishes at the Pac in the 800M her other 2 seasons). She also was part of a National Championship winning effort for the Buffs, being the one who ran the 400M leg of the Buff's Distance Medley Relay (DMR) team that pulled a big upset and won at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Wish her only the best as a Don next year.
  • On the incoming side, thestridereport.com has tweeted that Rachel McArther, who it looks will be a junior next season in all 3 distance runner seasons (cross country, indoor and outdoor track), will be joining the Buffs after spending her 1st 2 college years at Villanova. (If it matters, looks like she hasn't taken any redshirt seasons in any season so far.) Per the roster page linked to below, she competed for and attended Patriot HS in Bristow, Virginia her high school years.
She looks to have been a big contributor on the cross country team last season for the Wildcats, while mainly running the 800M and 1500M/ mile during the track seasons.
Welcome and congrats to her!

Her Villanova roster page - https://villanova.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8615
(On the track, her time at Villanova looks to be highlighted by Big East Conference Championships in the mile at the 2019 indoor championships, as well as being part of the Villanova 4X800M team that won at conference indoors' in 2018. Outdoors, she finished 3rd and 2nd in the 800M outdoor conference championships in 2018 and 2019, respectively. She was also, per the roster page, the "USATF Junior Outdoor champion in the 1500 meters during the 2018 summer season".

She also looks to have largely had a very good cross country 2018 season, finishing 2nd at the Big East Championships (a few seconds behind only a teammate) before winning the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional leading her team to a win that earned the Wildcats an auto-qualifier into the NCAA Championships (which the Buffs won). (Her team, including her, looks to have had an off day at the championships themselves, as she "only" finished 119th while the team finished 24th (out of 31), the later after getting talked about in some of the running websites as being a potential podium team.)

From her roster page, it also looks like she has earned multiple All-Academic honors at the school, conference and national levels.
