DC Search Including & beyond the 1st 4 Candidates

Its been well discussed who the two offers went out to. After Gibbs fell through, RG and MacIntyre have been thoroughly vetting many different candidates. Its been a long process, but they both know this is a very important hire. Its not lip service about building a foundation. They have been identifying the right coach who shares MacIntyre's defensive philosophy (butting heads all season with Baer), who wants to be a college DC and all the duties associated including recruiting and development. The amount of time it has taken is not due to a lack of interest in the job.

I have to respectfully disagree with several points.

First - when your 1st (and if I understand correctly 2nd) choice turns you down - the amount of time is absolutely because of lack of interest in the job. If the 1st (and 2nd) choices were interested the job would be filled.

No doubt MacIntyre and George are working hard to find a decent 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc. choice.

Second - the idea that Baer and MacIntyre were "butting heads" is absolutely ridiculous to me. Baer has been MacIntyre's defensive coordinator the entire time he has been a head coach. And suddenly in 2014 they are butting heads about defensive philosophy?

OK. If the take is the reason its taking long is to identify and vet candidates b/c Gibbs chose Tech, then I'd agree. If the take is no one wants this job, it's toxic, coaching tree, etc. then I disagree.

On butting heads -- I mentioned it more than once during the season and after the season before Baer "moved on." Not some convenient spin. MacIntyre was not happy with the defense and the lack of turnovers. They did not agree on how to fix it.

How about this for the Second?

Mac "What we're doing isn't working in the Pac-12. We need to make some changes."

Baer "We need to stay the course." - or - "I agree, but believe in a different direction for the changes."

It seems very reasonable to me that this would happen. It's not like they share a brain or that the defense didn't fail in the very areas that were emphasized.

How do you figure? When a person says something like, "That was the worst pass I've ever seen" during a game, is he/she to be taken seriously that it is literally the worst pass he/she has ever seen? Hyperbole is commonly used to exaggerate a point. I apologize I misrepresented your guys' expectations for this team, I didn't then and don't now actually believe you, or anyone else on these boards, think CU should be winning the Pac 12 right now.

In the movie "The Birdcage" Nathan Lane's character leans towards hysteronics and hyperbole. You posts are 100% more entertaining when read with that voice.

LaRussa said he and Baer were not fired...they left for their own reasons...friendships mostly is my understanding.

Maybe it has been mentioned elsewhere, but anyone think the lack of a DC could lead to more defections from the Defensive recruits for 2015? Obviously those who were recruited primarily by Baer and Larussa are at risk probably more than the others. Could be anyone worried we change our defensive philosophy in a way that adversely effects their likelihood of playing.

Regardless, like everyone else here I hope we resolve this soon!

I'd welcome the opportunity to re-recruit these kids when the new DC is in place. More than 1 wouldn't be offered I'd surmise.

I know what was going on but Baer was not all of a sudden different. Baer likes to pretty much stay in a base package and keep everything in front of the defense - I said this the day he was hired. He is very easy to gameplan against because he does not give you many different looks or disguise the defense very well. Blitz are few and far between. He was doing that at ND over a decade ago. You did see a few more blitzes later in the season and maybe that was MacIntyre. One thing in defense of Baer is he did not have the players to take a lot of risk - would of given up more big plays if he did it too much. I think MacIntyre just realized late what others realized a long time ago.

I think you are not speaking accurately about what LaRussa said - LaRussa didn't say anything about Baer.

"No one was forced out. We weren't fired," LaRussa said. "When coach Baer and I left, it wasn't easy to say goodbye, but we left on good terms. We had a good working relationship (with MacIntyre) and there was nothing negative leaving.

I think he was saying that Baer was not fired.

If a coach takes a job at a lower conference school for a lower salary and is not forced to pay the buyout on his contract then it is safe to assume he was pushed out.

The new DC will have a chance to re-recruit these kids. Or he will choose not too. I think that will tell a lot.

I think it is sweet that you think we're going to have a new DC on board before signing day. Even if they hired someone this week (which it doesn't sound like they plan to) they'd only have a week to try to re-recruit guys.

The pooch has been royally screwed in this whole DC changeover. Makes an already weak program look even weaker that we can't even dupe anybody into taking a job with us at this point. It will be a major problem if they don't have someone in place by NLOI Day. The way this is going right now, I'm guess we're going to end spring practices without a DC on staff.

Maybe some of the disconnect between MacIntyre and Baer/LaRussa was over recruiting?

Not just the disappointing results, but the targets. Their targets skewed short relative to other CU targets. Just throwing that out there.

Too much to ask for the guy to be in place for Jay Jay Wilson's rescheduled visit on the 30th?

thanks. Could be spin, but he said what he said.

I am pretty sure that Baer was pushed. He had a $200K buyout in his contract and I am sure he would not of left unless the buyout was waived. I suspect that he was told things were not working out so go look for a job. Not sure if MacIntyre would of fired him though if he chose to stay.
