That was a "WTF" game

CU has transformed into a "punch em in the mouth" mentality and I love it.

We want teams to dread playing us because they know we hit hard and never stop.

I don't hate the conduct penalties. One was a bad call anyway. We obviously have to be smart.

The badass invincible mentality is hard to turn off in a game of split seconds. I'll take the good with the bad in this situation.

At the end of the day, I loved how we responded in the 2nd half in the face of adversity and I think that game was a very valuable learning experience for our players. They simply looked like a team that had never been in that situation before and didn't really know how to handle themselves appropriately. I liken it to a kid who's been picked on his entire childhood, finally hit his growth spurt in high school and is finding out he can throw punches all the same with the other kids that have been picking on him his entire life.

I agree; I also thought they went away from the vertical passing game with which they've had a lot of success this year. Often they would line up with three WRs on the wide side of the field and UCLA put a CB, Nickle, and a Safety on them with no over the top help, and CU never tried to take advantage of it. Way, way, way too many designed QB runs. Frustrating.

The o-line play in pass protection has been a liability these past 2 games. The tackles were overmatched last night and it had a direct effect on the vertical passing game. Sefo had very little time to throw and that affected his ability to sense real pressure and he bailed on the pocket too early at times. There was one play on 3rd and goal from the 15 or whatever and he left the pocket straight into 2 unblocked defenders (one due to a whiffed block from the RB). He threw a nice deep ball to Ross on one play that clanked off his hands. Luckily UCLA reciprocated that effort with and drop in the EZ later in the game.

Pretty good result for a team that for the most part laid an egg this week. If MM is the coach we think he is then I expect them to come back more disciplined and focused on playing Buff football and win out going to the P12 CG and Rose Bowl

I watched the DBs (I always do) and our WR's couldn't get separation. If you were watching the entire field live (as our staff in the sky does) it was very obvious that the UCLA DBs were giving our WRs a lot of problems. The QB runs were the only way to keep the chains moving. It looked a lot like the issues we had last year. Bradley is a good DC (pedo State guy) and their D is pretty well coached.

I was in the end zone and there were numerous times our receivers got separation, sefo has just been struggling with the pressure he is getting. On one of his pics the guy was wide open with about 20 yards in front of him, if he hits mac with more accuracy on the wheel route he gets another 15 yards. The biggest miss to me was in the third quarter when ucla had two guys to our three on the left and sefo even looked left to see a wide open receiver on a slant route but then switched all the way around to the right to throw into double coverage. Obviously ucla did have good coverage at time but there were clear openings for sefo to hit and he missed them or didn't have time to get to them.

2 TD passes missed - JMac was over thrown, that was 6. I think it was Ross where the ball, literally went right threw his hands.
where the hell is Frazer? I sure thought he would be more of a target in these red-zone situations? either blocking or receiver, or possibly as a RB? everyweek I keep thinking he will show up, only to be disapouined. KEvans where was he last night? and what happened to DLee?

I think your making way too much of the impact of fans and penalties in one game. I for one love the swagger and not being the choirboys of the PAC. I don't recall Miami giving a **** during their glory years.

Maybe so.

For me it boils down to this:

When you are ranked 20th in the nation, play like it.

Last night, they didn't.

Bad-boy teams aren't sustainable. Sustained success is built on executing plays, not extracurricular attitude. Look at Miami. It wasn't sustainable. Similar story with the Oakland Raiders or the Baylor Bears. The bad-boy persona leads to bad off-field issues. Been there, done that.

I get it and we are not Miami of old, at least yet. Not all of those PF penalties were due to dirty or over-the-top play, some looked EXTREMELY suspect in my opinion. That targeting call was complete garbage.

On the crowd and how the fans "looked" to a national audience:
1. The marshmallows didn't "look bad on national TV." The next person to get hurt because someone threw a marshmallow at them will be the first. The announcers laughed about it, and that's the right attitude - they're marshmallows. Marshmallows.

2. Unless you actually know that the line is "**** em up, **** em up, go CU," you can't tell what the crowd is yelling when it's on the broadcast. You really can't. Watch a game with someone who doesn't know, point out the cheer, and ask them what the words are. They'll have no ****ing clue.

3. The crowd looked great on TV.

4. The Icelandic chant sounded absolutely amazing, especially in surround sound.

As for the players, I'm not going to excuse some of the **** they pulled, but:

1. Some of it is in fact on the refs: in a lot of those plays, there really should have been two calls; only calling one team in those was bull****. I almost think the league has told the refs not to call matching penalties on plays like that (has a P12 crew done it once this year, called offsetting unsportsmanlike penalties? - it's almost like they're not allowed to, which would also explain why they talk to each other so much before making the call). Anyway, when at least one player (it doesn't matter which team ) is getting a pass on ****ty behavior over and over again, things are going to get ugly. If there had been some offsetting penalties, it actually would have calmed things down a bit.

2. As noted elsewhere, it's obvious that our team hates fUCLA. The players didn't want to just beat them, they wanted to rip their guts out and stomp on their entrails. And so they tried too hard which both caused them to make some mistakes (I chalk up at least one int and two fumbles to this), and it also led to the undisciplined penalties as well. They need to learn to channel and control the hate, let it flow through them.

This. All of it. So much so that it bears repeating.

Ugly and fun game, all at the same time. It has been a few years since I have been to a game, but here are a few thoughts:

OL has progressed to the point where they are, perhaps, a middle of the road P12 OL. When they go up against a top flight P12, or other P5, DL they get bitch slapped. Pretty pathetic performance. UCLA's DL has their way them. Lack of TD's in the red zone was embarrassing. I blame the OL that couldn't get a push at an Indian Casino Blackjack table.

QB, Sefo just is not very good. He has his moments, but overall, I lost count of the times when a reciever was open on a flare o r in the flat and Sefo threw, or underthrew, a ball where the WR had to go on the ground to catch. Oftentimes, YAC opportunities were there, but hard to exploit when you have to lay out to catch a five yard out. Sefo's 2d INT was vintage old Sefo. That is what is maddening about the guy. He can make a great throw, and then stink it up. That LB was just waiting in zone for Sefo to put that ball up. Sefo had no idea he was there. How people say he can see coverages better than Montez in light of that is a mystery to me. I am not saying you go Montez in game 10 of the season whenCU is still in the CCG hunt, let's just say I am excited about the future. That one play where Sefo escaped the facemask and completed a pass to Lindsay exhibits Sefo's best qualities, he is, as I have said before, probably the toughest SOB who ever took a snap at CU. Love his warrior mentality, just wish he could be more accurate and see the field better.

WR Ross dropped a beautiful pass from Sefo. Otherwise, hard to tell, it wasn't ike they were getting open and when they were the passes were suspect all too often.

RB Lindsay played well for the lack of holes.

TE/FB Do we even have any?

The D played a good game overall. UCLA's O is awful.

ST saved the game. That is a surprise, especially when you have a kicker who makes me look back to the days of Aric No Goodman fondly. Oliver should be returning punts now, not JMac.

Mora is, in a word, a moron. Thank you for bringing your talented undisciplined penalty-laden team to Folsom. Without the lack of discipline, the game may have gone the other way. Recruit lights out, do well the fist couple of years, but all the talent in the world cannot overcome coaching and player stupidity. I hope UCLA keeps that guy forever.

Offensive execution was poor...lots to do with not consistently winning the LOS...but even when there were plays to be made we didn't make a lot of them. Doesn't matter tho when you have the best D in the PAC 12.

Being s good conference or not is based on expectations and consistency.

The Pac-12 is neither. You have a Team like Wazzou lose to EWU and then go on and win. USC gets destroyed by Alabama and then figures it out by mid season. A talented UCLA team suck eggs. Oregon and Stanford aren't doing any favors. UDub came out of nowhere.

When a team that has been awful like CU has been for a decade starts winning of course people will think it's not a good conference. But if CU stays out of the dumpster fire and remains an 8+ win team for the next 5 years it'll show the strength of the program.

It also doesn't help when your games are on at 8pm MT.

PAC seems like the exact same as last year. Very deep with no easy outs but not the top tier the sec or big 10 has. These wins were here last year too we just couldn't pull them out.

UCLA is better than their record, they've found ways to lose close games (sound familiar?). I am enjoying the heck out this year, don't get me wrong, but next year to me is the real test on the program's foundation, can it be sustained? At least to a 6-7 win baseline.

You mean we aren't top heavy like those conferences? Top to bottom, the PAC is every bit as good as the SEC and Big 10, just don't have the Alabama, OSU or UM teams at the top.

Disagree. Statistically, the Pac12 is a lot weaker conference this year. The conference peaked in 2013 when it was positively loaded with good QBs and has slipped a bit every year.

If you're looking for stats, the Pac12 only has 3 teams in the top 44 of S&P+. Yikes.

I think what impresses me most about the defensive performance is it happened with Gilbert ejected very early on.
I guess, but Gilbert's real value is in pass rush and that's the one area where we were pretty bad outside of some blitz concepts with Chido and Gilliam. Our 4 man rush was non-existent without Gilbert.

Except, somehow, four Pac12 teams (WA, Utah and WSU, along with us) are all ranked top 25.
But I wouldn't consider any of those besides UW as elite, and that's even in question. 3 of the 4 have been near the bottom of recruiting rankings for the last 5 years running.

its Brady Quinn, does it really matter?
