Official 2016 Coaching Carousel

Mack was the NC of February! He got lazy in recruiting, taking only TX kids who were big names as Jrs. His commit list was almost always filled up by May of any year, irespective of what t a kid might do his senior year or whether the kid had peaked as a HS Jr. As a result, he signed way too many kids who had peaked as HS Jrs!
Strong is just too "no fun,old school", as Bill Mallory was when he was at CU (Buffs coulda had Don James instead---Crowder's other huge mistake---Chuckles being a solid No. 1!!!)

You are right about taking kids early. He took a lot of kids who were grown men at 16 and didn't develop much after. He also relied to much on his connections with the "big name" HS coaches. He got a lot of excellent kids but he also missed out on some kids who became stars at other schools.

They also got a lot of kids who were individually skilled but couldn't or wouldn't deal with not being "the" star.

You mean like Mason Crosby ???

Darrell Hazell fired at Purdue. Remember when we were fighting with Purdue fans over Butch Jones?

Having trouble finding a link. Surprising to me that they'd do it halfway through the season.

Hazell went 9-33 as Purdue’s head coach since taking over for the 2013 season. BoiledSports.com reports WR coach/recruiting coordinator Gerad Parker will be the interim coach.

One conference win per year will do you in. If MacIntyre had started this year this way he'd likely be in the same boat.

Thanks. He's a good coach. Didn't look like it was working there, though.
One of the guys over at SBNation had a good article on the Purdue rebuild. They were trying to play traditional 3 yards and a cloud of dust football like the rest of the conference, but they were doing it with inferior athletes. Their take was Purdue needed to run a unique system offense. They need to zag while the conference zigs to be successful long term.

That's what they did in the previous pockets of success with Tiller.

Well, since there are now two jobs officially open, might as well start the list and speculating:

Open jobs:

1. FIU- Ron Turner fired before the leaves turned. Names: Who cares.
2. Purdue- Darrell Hazell fired. Names: early rumor Troy Calhoun of AFA.

Highly probable openings:

1. LSU- Les Miles canned. Ed "The Cajun Wild Man" Orgeron at the helm with an interim tag. Names: Herman, Briles.
2. Baylor- Old Man Grobe at the helm with an interim tag. Names: Don't know, but something tells me Dykes may be on their radar.

I know there are several other gigs that will come open, but for now, I'll exclude them from the list until something concrete happens....like another firing/hiring.

Things will likely heat up by the end of the month.

Hazzell was only at Kent for two seasons. That 11-3 season thus was winning with another's recruits as your key guys.Purdue obviously has its challenges keeping up in the B1G. It's in a difficult spot to recruit. However, Indiana has improved and isn't an easy out. Makes some bowls. There's no reason Purdue couldn't at least do that with the right coach. Purdue might be thinking "we can't hire another MAC coach", but they'd be punching above their weight if they got Fleck from Western Michigan. Could also give Schiano a ring, but he'll of course be keeping an eye on Penn State.

Herman is long gone, already. LSU, UT or some other heavy weight will land him. Strong at LSU would be interesting.

Thought if Houston got the Big 12 invite, Herman might stick around, but since that isn't happening, you are probably right.

Saw on cbs Tim DeRuyter is on his way out in Fresno. Another name to keep in mind if JMFL gets a head coach opportunity
