He won't outrecruit out of the gate, no matter what.

He doesn't have to beat teams that have far more talent. He needs to beat teams that have somewhat more talent, in a couple years. This won't happen fast.

he could have augmented the staff with some proven recruiters at this level. he chose not to. football coaches in general are usually brimming with self confidence and this guy is no different. but, he could have made a safer bet than bringing basically all his guys with him. this is not the wac.

and, yeah, he does need to beat more talented teams. soon. look at the rosters of every p12 team except wsu and tell me that CU would not, on paper, based upon athletic ability, be an underdog. and, i am not sure what you mean by this "won't happen fast"-- we've been down for about 7 years, historically our worst stretch ever. how much longer are we supposed to wait to see a competitive team?

i'm not unrealistic about the prospects, but there had better be drastic improvement over this year. drastic. this was the worst year of CU football i've ever seen in over 40 years of being a die-hard. hell, fairbanks gave me more hope than what we saw this year.

preaching patience after 7 years of failure is a bit hard to take. the guy needs to show up and do something.

He needs to out-recruit for some players right away. It will be a process, but he needs to upgrade the talent level sooner rather than later.

He better, that's what he is here for. I want W's as much as anybody but I just wanna see some hard nosed football to start. Don't know about y'all but I'm pretty damn tired of being pushed around by teams that it shouldn't happen against. Tired of our oline consistently getting their ass kicked. Youth or not, we were flat soft last year. Hate to say that but everybody saw what happened when they got busted in the mouth, it didn't usually end well. Need to remedy that for sure.

    Official Coaching Staff Meltdown Thread

    From the Denver Post-

What utter failure. These guys are tripling their salaries and being paid much higher than more qualified coaches.

And who says these guys aren't qualified?

Last time I checked, the previous head coach had qualifications of being a lifetime TE coach. The previous offensive coordinator had qualifications of being a lifetime RB coach. The previous defensive coordinator had qualifications of a being a lifetime defensive backs coach.

That's not the point. CU is ridiculously stupid for stipulating a minimum of 2.6mil in the contract. He could have hired whoever he wanted for that $$. And we should be paying the going rate or a tad above for like assistants, not much much more. I've posted other Pac-12 assistants and they are far more qualified and less paid than what it appears we are going to pay. We failed big time.

Why does everyone act like throwing millions of dollars away that we don't need to isn't a big problem??? Like $$ isn't an issue for the CU AD:rolling_eyes: You have a large salary pool to attract bigger fish.... SJSU's staff would have probably came regardless due to the step up to the Pac-12. We could have paid 1.6mil and saved the rest for facilities. Bad business

I think the salary thing also has a bit of a PR aspect in that the AD is trying to send a message that we take football seriously again.

No. It was in MacIntyre's contract along with the facilities. The CU AD is self-proclaimed POOR. They sure do suck with money

Liver we tried that with the last staff we hired bad ass-recruiters (on paper) and we got 1 half decent class and 2 terrible ones. Very few people out of the gate are going to be able to recruit well in this situation, Les Miles/Nick Saban, sure; but any coach we reasonably could have gotten isn't going to out-recruit the top half of the pac-12 until this team looks like something like a football team and not a bunch of dudes playing sand-lot.

We need to go out play solid, well coached ball, beat the Utah's, Wazzu's, and OOC schools we should and at that point we can talk about trying to out recruit people. Right now we just need to stop out-stupding them.

Slider they guaranteed a pool of at least 2.6 million to be available, they did not guarantee to spend 2.6 million. Your quote from the post even says that.

Official 2012 Colorado Coach Search Rumor Compendium - All 2012 Assistants Fired?

Who cares how much money they spend on coaches? Seriously - people act like it is coming out of their pocket.

The fact that $2.6 million is being thrown around is just to show that there are no excuses financially for failing to succeed.

A few things come to my mind when I hear the talk of how CU should have gotten "more qualified" BCS-level coaches:
    - CU is not a good job right now, and talking about future facilities and past success (7+ years ago) doesn't change how ****** of a job this currently is
    - the majority of ACs are not 100% driven by $$, just because we could/would pay more doesn't mean they'd even consider CU. How many of you would jump from a good job at a successful company to a similar job at a failing company?
    - the new P12 TV $$ is going to change the rates for AC salaries, it won't be much longer before the $2.7 million/yr number is nothing more than average at best
    - building a coaching staff isn't like fantasy football. The pieces need to fit together and the ACs need to have connections to the HC. The fantasy lists I've seen of desired ACs is comical

Time to be a bit more realistic about the situation CU football is currently in

I agree with DBT. The AD needed to do something to get people back on board and show they were serious about football. They knew they weren't going to be able to get a big splash hire so the next best way is to wave a bunch of money in front of front of people's noses. I think it was the right move. They have to sell tickets.

The only concern I have is that there is enough cash laying around when it is time to make Tad rich.

    slider, here's what you quoted:

"CU agreed to allocate at least $2.6 million to hire assistant coaches."

That means that MacIntyre was given a hiring budget of $2.6 million and a commitment to be willing to discuss going over that budget. It doesn't mean that he has to spend the entire $2.6 MM.

I was fine with him bringing a large chunk of his staff. 5 or 6 guys. But then I would have hoped he would have spent some of the extra scratch to go out an find some top rate assistants from BCS caliber schools, basically to fill in around the edges.

Right now it sounds like he is bringing in 8 of his guys, and AZ reported a couple days ago that Hagan is also likely still on staff. HAGAN of all guys.

    Two thoughts:

    1. We bitch when we hire a WAC coach and he doesn't bring his staff...then seven years later we bitch when we hire a WAC coach and he does bring his staff.

    2. I'll coach RB's at the bargain basement price of $250K. I can scream bitch, mother****er and ***** as loud as nearly anybody. Continuity will help. Shall I send a resume'?

I admit I don't know, but why all the Hagan hate? He was basically a non-starter for Embree and assumed all but gone for Mac

I don't give a crap if he brings the entire staff from SJSU as long as he builds a winner here. I think his recruiting will be just fine because his staff is very connected and has legitimate success to point to in our breadbasket state.

    1. That was Peterson only. He was also the Broyles award winner that year iirc. So he was an integral part of Hawkin's BSU success. Also, the weak link to Hawkin's staff was the BSU guys he brought over with him (Riddle, Bandeson, Collins).

This just isn't a realistic scenario. Established coaches don't leave BCS programs for lateral moves. Now if CU wanted to hire a BCS assistant coach to be the new offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator - that might have worked. But coaches who are at BCS level schools don't leave just for more money. They leave for a promotion.

It was never going to happen that an wide receiver coach at a BCS school was going to leave that school to come to Colorado to be wide receiver coach. Not even remotely possible.

As for AZ's numbers - I'm not a subscriber so I have no idea what rumors he is throwing around. Who are the "8" guys who AZ says he is bringing with him? NCAA rules allow a football program to have a head coach and nine (9) assistant coaches. That doesn't include the strength and conditioning coach and the recruiting coordinator / director of football operations.

Go ahead and melt away slider. You are starting to sound a lot like your brother. You know absolutely nothing about whether this coaching staff is any better than any other staff. Just because we have a large assistant pool doesn't mean we just throw up "big" names and throw cash at them. Coaches are as much of a team as the players. I think the assistant pool will actually be more critical a few years down the road when an assistant moves on and we have a very competitive salary to offer to great qualified replacement candidates.

Well mission not accomplished then. Paying big money is supposed to attract top coaches, coaches don't get better because you paid them a bunch of money.

I hope we've found our football version of Tad, but this whole process has been pretty underwhelming since they let Embree go. Maybe some if these assistants turn out to be legit BCS assistants, but if they were so great they wouldn't have been working at San Jose State last year.

That's not even true at all. Money talks. A guy like Brennan makes only 120k at Ore St. We have the salary pool to throw him 175kish to get him to jump.

So we should recruit better players, but not better coaches? And we should wait a couple years down the road to get "great qualified" coaches? Ok gotcha
