Butch Jones

Apparently. And he was may fave. Oh well, I'm sure Butch will be a good coach...he was an integral part of Brian Kelly's rebuilds and CMU and Cincy. Hope he's the right guy if we get him.

Gary was a favorite of mine too, but in this case I'm just talking about cool first names.

I don't think Purdue is the big competition for his services, I think it is Cincinnati. They are probably sitting back and then going to try to match the offer which they can probably do easily. Same money and less stress..it could be tempting.

I find it tough to believe that Cincinnati can match a $5M+ total salary

I don't think CU is offering that either and if they are they should be able to attract almost any candidate since Chip Kelly is only making $3.2 million at Oregon.

I heard the airplane pulled into a private hanger ?? any news since then? has he been spotted around the campus? did the limo take his wife past the flat irons mall? by the way how old are his three boys? will they be going to high school?

I agree with Tini. We sometimes think of CU as small time, but I'm guessing being in Big 10 country with Ohio State dominating the landscape, that funding is an issue at Cincinnati.

The rumor was 2.5M for Jones and 2.5M for assistants so we are probably looking at a 5M budget.

Agreed, although CU is almost always going to have to overpay the coaching staff to make up for lack of security (ie long term contracts), and a higher cost of living than a lot of other places in the country.

Purdue's offer that I've seen is $4M total (think $3M/year for Jones and only $1M/year for a staff). CU's is $2.7M/year for Jones and $2.6M/year for his staff so at $5.3M total that's significantly more than Purdue is offering.

I am just worried about his West coast knowledge and recruiting skills..... other than that, I don't know much about him. CU needs a hard ass on board who isn't Hawkins-like at all. The athletes are here to play football, and well (hopefully), not get a 4.0 in their finance class (i mean, awesome if they do, but that shouldn't be why they come to play for CU). I am sick of seeing mediocre 5"10 white guys on the field...

Interesting SI article on Butch Jones when he got hired at Cinci. Am I wrong that it rings a little Hawkins-y?

I got the opposite. The talk about how Kelly was like a CEO whereas Jones was more of a "football guy" made me think he's the opposite of Hawk. If anything, Kelly sounds more like Hawk than Jones does (note: not saying Kelly is like Hawk, because Kelly is actually competent, but just saying that Hawk has more of that CEO vibe).

Made an overture to Strong and were rejected. Made sense to try to the hail mary, even if it skewed expectations of fans.

Pretty sure that Bohn stated publicly that Calhoun wasn't on the list. Sounds like he's an AFA lifer unless the right NFL job would be offered him.

I know it's a moot point, but did Bohn ever actually reach out to Strong (or his reps)? Or was it simply rumored? I seem to remember something about Bohn reaching out to a HC of a BCS program with Colorado ties and people assumed it was Strong because he has Watson on his staff.

Anyway, it looks increasingly like it'll be Butch Jones. If he turns down the CU offer I fully expect an Allbuffs meltdown.

Whether Jones comes to CU or goes to Purdue, it sucks for the Cincy players. Can't fault Jones for that, but it's too bad that coaches can leave for a job they'd prefer, but players are restricted by transfer rules and in many cases might not even have great transfer opportunities. Also sucks that they'll be preparing for a bowl game without the coaches that recruited them.

No but it makes me extremely nervous. I really would like a guy with more west coast ties, the Big East is a joke, it is awful football. medicore success there to me doesn't prove much to me, especially when you are inheriting a 12-0 team. I hope I am wrong.

Mac didn't have westcoast ties, just sayin

but....wasnt gary kubiak the cu coach until changing his mind at the last minute? will be interesting next 12-18 hours

Butch Jones: YOU ARE NOT DUMB.

I remember about a year ago one of their guys was vacationing in Rocky Mountain National Park and Boulder and was tweeting that Dan Hawkins should be shot for not being able to consistently recruit top classes to Boulder.

Let's hope this guy can get it done, if the rumors are true and he is the coach.

I am way against this hire. BJ hasn't proven anything other than being a good user of Brian Kelly's players in a weak conference. I am highly skeptical, especially since his teams don't typically have VG defenses. I just don't feel like we're getting the right ROI for the huge dough we're going to spend.

VG defenses? The hell is that? The defenses at Cincinnati have been salty.

What is a VG defense? BJ's defenses have actually been very good.
