Official 2017 Coaching Carousel Thread - Zona hires Sumlin

Yeah, Herm isn’t an upgrade and neither is Christobal. Sumlin is only an upgrade of you believe he can elevate their recruiting, but he’s not a better coach than Rich Rod. UCLA is an upgrade for sure and I think it’s far too early to know whether Jonathan Smith is an upgrade over Gary Anderson at Oregon State.

Sumlin has never left a team better than he found it. There's way cheaper options that have a good chance to improve the team.

Sumlin would provide instant recruiting improvements, perhaps setting it up to win in 4 years, under a real coach. I can't see UofA wanting that, but like so many, they don't seem willing to peel that onion.

Sumlin replaced a 5-year run of Briles at Houston, and maintained success.
Sumlin took over an aTm team and won 11, followed by 8, 8, 8, 7. That's called getting steadily worse.

I'm with Creebuz. I have some doubts that Chip is a good CEO. He relied a lot on a system that Belliota put in place, and a ready-made staff staff, led by Alliota. Chip definitely brought the offense. But it wasn't a test of his skills as a HC/CEO.

We will see if he can put the whole thing together. I wouldn't bet against him, but it's also no slam dunk. I think his personally is a bit rough, and it works ok as long as he's winning. If they see some adversity, they may have problems.

I like Helton, but I don't feel he has control of the team overall and they are destined to under-achieve yet again. A/D doesn't seem all-in on Helton and I think the team plays like it.

AZ might get a wash with Sumlin it'll have to play out. He had talent fall in his lap and several high profile QBs transfer out for reasons and he still got some of the best from TX and didn't improve. Plus he's never recruited in the P12 footprint so he's starting from scratch. He might view the P12 as an easier conference to compete in considering.

It's too bad Chavis is already the DC at Arkansas, would have been great if Sumlin brought him with him to AZ.

How does Mazzone keep getting jobs?

The best part about all these coaching CHANGES, is that they are coaching CHANGES!!! Teams will usually have to take at least 2-3 years to adapt to the new staff. Arizona defense was not that good, and finished below our defense. This year is so important to MM in so many ways. All these changes at other programs that we face, a lot of talent all over the field, including on a defense that now knows what needs to be done. Sumlin is not an upgrade over RR, and as mentioned, the defense was not and is not that good, so good luck AZ!
We play a new coach in weeks 2, 4, 5, 8, and 9
We play a new QB in weeks 1, 2, 4, 6, and 11
I may be way out of whack here, but (except for At Washington), this Buffs team could win 10-11 regular season games if everybody buckles down and plays lights out and things go our way. Every team on this schedule has adversity and with the changes at each school, who knows! We need a RB to come out of the shadows and play huge. I hope to god that man is on this roster.

They've done that the hard way, always struggling with recruiting. Just as Utah, WSU and OSU do.

Tucson and the UofA campus is a complete pit. It's full of retired people as well. There is nothing cool about Tucson
They are within a day's drive of Southern Calif hotbeds, and the Phoenix area is growing in recruiting importance.
Boulder is seen by those kids as 10x more attractive than Tucson. One decent year on the field, and we see results. Those others I mentioned don't ever see that bump.
If we averaged 7 wins per season over the last 10 years, things would be much different here.
UofA has always struggled with being seen as a destination spot for recruits.

The whole state is full of retired people, the difference being that the Phoenix area retirees are overweight folks with hurrycanes, unhappily trudging through discount buffet lines, while the Tucson retirees are pretty Colorado-like, i.e. bike riders, hikers, etc. As to outdoor scenery/activities/mountain proximity, take it from someone who spends WAY to much time in both places for the last 10 years, the PHX area doesn't hold a candle to Tucson. If you take a newbie from the Denver burbs to the PHX burbs for 3 days to watch a few Rockies spring training games and play 18 holes of golf, they probably going to like it if they've never seen Tucson. But Tucson is much more Colorado-like than PHX is, in terms of culture and lifestyle.

As to football recruiting most highly rated AZ prospects are going to stay instate or go to a California school. We should work the state, but not with an excess of optimism.

This is the worst post I have ever read on Allbuffs

Nick Saban is looking for yet another coordinator-didn't he hire the guy from UTSA or whatever and admit he did that because he was sick of having to look for coordinators every year? Lol. Agree on Sumlin-probably about as good as UA could have done right now, and they'll probably backload his deal so he can keep as much of his A&M buyout money as possible.

Sumlins money was fully guaranteed with no offsets I believe.

Sumlin’s aTm deal had no offsets and had to be paid IN FULL within 60 days. He is good to go as is...

I'm not even sold on Chip Kelly. He had a great 4 year run at Oregon. Elite 4 years, actually. But that's been followed by 6 years in the NFL that were a complete failure. In Philadelphia, he lost the locker room and failed. In San Francisco it was a 1 year disaster. Then 1 year as some sort of ESPN guy who I think was on the NFL crew. I'm skeptical on whether he can recapture the Oregon magic from 6 years ago and whether he really has the love & hunger for it to make that happen.

Chip did great job at Oregon but a lot of it was made possible by a guy named Marriota. Can Chip find his a QB who elevates his entire program and has the ability to run his system?

Also when Chip was doing it the offense was still somewhat of a novelty, now every conference has schools running those concepts. DCs are not going to be at a loss for how to prepare for him like they were.

I don't think MM is worried about what the other teams in the conference are doing, only thing that matters is whether his team is good enough. I seem to remember everyone talking about how great the coaches in this conference were the last few years, then MM managed an 8-1 Pac-12 run pretty much embarrassing the lot of them, maybe we should wait and see how these guys do and how we match up.
Your boy MM has gone 4-32 against PAC12 coaches, not including his one hit wonder year because that was an outlier and there isn’t a snowballs chance in hell it will happen again under MM. Do you seem to remember what happened last season? We almost lost to csu and almost lost to Oregon states interim coach. Would you call another 5 win season next season as something a coach shouldn’t worry about?

I don't know who does this account, but it has its moments (mostly plays off the running joke of Sumlin liking the booze and his money).

P.S. I love these fake coach twitter accounts. I follow the ones for Sumlin, Pelini, Gruden and Briles. Any others that are kind of funny and active?

It definitely feels like most of Sumlin's reputation is based on that one Manziel Heisman season where they pretty much caught lightning in a bottle and were college football's hot **** with the win v Alabama.

I think there’s a Saban and Meyer one. Oh man and there’s a funny Paul Johnson one.

STFU!!!

He’s connected and established in one of our top two recruiting states. With recruiting being our staffs historic pitfall, I wish they pulled someone from Penn State or Florida. Mike’s work is looking tough next year.

Chip Kelly won with Denis Dixon, Darron Thomas, and Mariota during his tenure. He is a good football coach. I think he is an upgrade over Mora, but I also see the potential for both a high ceiling and a low floor.

UCLA is not Oregon in how things are run, and the structure that Belotti, Aliotta, and Phil Knight built are not there. In sum, Chip the coach should scare Colorado fans, Chip the general manager should scare UCLA fans.

I'll be honest, I'm a little frightened by Chip the mascot.

Should I start one for MM?
