Official 2017 Coaching Carousel Thread - Zona hires Sumlin

I don't know who does this account, but it has its moments (mostly plays off the running joke of Sumlin liking the booze and his money).

P.S. I love these fake coach twitter accounts. I follow the ones for Sumlin, Pelini, Gruden and Briles. Any others that are kind of funny and active?

Wildcats are red, Viagra is blue, Here I come Arizona, Herm Edwards is screwed.

Sumlin had Case Keenum in place when he arrived at Houston. He had Johnny Manziel when he arrived in College Station. For Tucson, he's got Khalil Tate in place.

He's a really good coach who wins quite a bit while that QB is there. Everyone knows what happened at aTm after Manziel left, but ignores that Keenum got hurt in 2010 at Houston and only played 3 games. Sumlin went 5-7 that season. Keenum was granted an extra year of eligibility, completed 71% of his passes as a senior while throwing 48 TDs to 5 Ints. Sumlin rode that to a 12-1 record and the aTm job.

Jive Sumlin expressed his appreciation to Keenum and reminisced a bit after Keenum's game winning touchdown against the Saints yesterday:

[Updated at 7:25 p.m.] Former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze was in Tuscaloosa today and was in the football building, The Tuscaloosa News has learned. Saban has always had a healthy respect for Freeze, who gave Alabama fits with his offense. Freeze was given a head coach restriction and two-game suspension but only if he were to become a head coach. He would face no restrictions as an assistant coach.

As long as Freeze agrees to a policy of no hookers on the company dime or time, he'll be one hell of a hire.

FWIW it looks like Demetrice Martin has started following a decent amount of zona twitter accounts, unless I'm misunderstanding the timing.

Sumlin's first two years are $2M each and then goes up to $3.5M for the last three years. Sumlin might be in Tucson for just two years. UA is on the hook for only the first two years.

Not sure he'll leave-he's got a P5 job. Plus, he won at least 8 games five times in the six years he was at A&M....which Aggy considers underachieving, but its overachieving (Arizona is the only program in this conference sans Colorado and Utah that has NOT played in the Rose Bowl) down there.

Winning 8 games at aTm is not the same as winning 8 at Arizona. If he can pull that off at Arizona, he'll be very successful.
The problem with your analysis is it ignores context. His best team was in year 1. His worse team was his last. No team was ever considered better than the team he had the year before. What does that say about player eval and development?

It doesn't sit right to me that Hugh Freeze could be in the playoffs as an Alabama assistant next season while Ole Miss is suffering through an NCAA bowl ban.

That’s why the bans should follow the coach, not program. I know Clay Travis isn’t too popular around here, but check out his interview with Hugh Freeze. One of the best interviews I’ve ever heard.

Freeze does have penalties associated with him becoming a head coach at another institution. He has no penalties for being an assistant. This seems reasonable to me. He should be able to earn some dough and prove he can be a stand up citizen.

As for the program facing punishment... the school collects the checks so they face the blame for hiring bad employees and not controlling the situation. I feel bad for the players — they ought to receive free traansfers. But, I don’t feel for ole piss.

Oh I think he's not a great developer of talent and he didn't recruit that well in College Station.........but my point was more he's dealing with expectations in Tucson that aren't anywhere near where they were for him at A&M.

He definitely recruiting well. A&M ranked 9, 5, 11, 18 and 13 from 2013 - 2017 but the evaluations and development were clearly lacking.

My opinion on sumlin is he is another coach that was at the right place at the right time. Walked into good situations that made him look like a great coach. I really do not think he will do anything special at az. He will look good this next season due to Tate. He will be another 6-7 win a season coach, with an occasional 8-9 win season.

Sumlin also doesn't have to deal with being the top sports program at UA which is the men's basketball program and UA got a good baseball team as well so he doesn't have to worry having to carry the college like at Texas A&M. In some ways the UA football gig is underrated. The only shortcoming UA has facilities wise is an indoor practice facility but that will eventually get done.

Also Sumlin's offense isn't really that much different from Rich Rod's offense. UA will be able to hit the ground running while ASU will be behind for sure.

And I hope Sumlin will get UA's uniforms straightened out.
